Derrick Thompson to be sentenced in Minneapolis crash that killed 5 young women
Several Minnesota families will finally see justice served on Thursday morning after five young women were killed in a high-speed crash two summers ago in Minneapolis. A jury found 32-year-old Derrick Thompson guilty last month in the deaths of Sahra Gesaade, 20; Salma Abdikadir, 20; Sabiriin Ali 17; Sagal Hersi, 19; and Siham Odhowa, 19. The group of friends were preparing for a friend's wedding at the time of the crash. Thompson was convicted of five counts of third-degree murder and 10 counts of criminal vehicular homicide. Law enforcement say he topped speeds of 100 mph while driving erratically on Interstate 35W on the night of June 16, 2023. A state trooper testified they were following Thompson without emergency lights activated, and saw him speed off onto East Lake Street, where he struck and instantly killed the victims. His sentencing hearing is set to start Thursday at 10 a.m. in a Hennepin County courtroom. Many of the victims' families are expected to be on hand, as they were during the trial. "It's over and the girls can finally rest in peace. Still, [Thompson] can call his mom and dad and tell them he loves them, but our daughters will never call us," said Fadumo Warsame, Gesaade's mother, following the verdict. "We're never going to see their wedding. We're never going to see our grandchildren." Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said her office plans to seek a lengthy sentence. "Mr. Thompson is being held accountable, and we will do everything we can to ensure that he can never do this again," Moriarty said last month. Thompson's defense argued his brother was actually behind the wheel driving. Damarco Thompson testified he wasn't in the Cadillac during the crash, and was only briefly inside when his brother rented it earlier at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Thompson was convicted of several federal drug and illegal firearm charges. His next federal court hearing is set for Aug. 25. WCCO will have a crew inside the courtroom and will bring you updates both on air and online.

Chiefs ace Rice gets 30-day jail term for hit-and-run crash
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was given a 30-day prison sentence and placed on probation for five years on Thursday after pleading guilty to charges arising from a high-speed crash that left several people injured, prosecutors in Texas said. Rice, 25, admitted two felony counts of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury, the Dallas County District Attorney's Office said. The Chiefs ace, a member of Kansas City's 2023-2024 Super Bowl-winning team, left the scene of the crash in Dallas on March 30 last year after racing in his Lamborghini at speeds of up to 191 kilometers per hour. Dallas prosecutors said Rice had made "multiple aggressive maneuvers" which led to the crash causing a "chain reaction that affected multiple vehicles." Rice fled the scene of the crash on foot. As part of his plea agreement, he was ordered to pay just under $115,500 toward victims' medical expenses. In a statement released through his attorney, Rice apologized to his victims. "There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused," Rice said. "I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families." Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot said it had been "extremely fortunate that no lives were lost that day." "And Mr. Rice is fortunate to have walked away unharmed," Creuzot added. "We hope he takes this as an opportunity to mature and leads by example moving forward." U.S. media reports said Rice would be able to serve his 30-day prison term at any point during the five years of his probation. With criminal proceedings concluded, the receiver is now likely to face a hefty multi-game suspension from the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Bizarre twist as Good Samaritan who bravely helped free passengers from the crumpled wreckage of an SUV after horror crash is ARRESTED by cops moments later
Two men have been charged after a high-speed crash that was captured on CCTV injured a family of five in Sydney. A 28-year-old allegedly crashed his black MG SUV into a Mercedes on King Street in Newtown, in the city's Inner West, about 7pm on Monday. In a shocking twist, a 20-year-old man who rescued the driver from the wreckage was seen moments later topless before being pushed face down into the concrete by police and arrested at the scene. Security footage from businesses along King Street - which had been packed with the dinner crowd - showed the black MG careened down the wrong side of the road before clipping a silver car and smashing head-on into the Mercedes. The family in the Mercedes SUV, a 43-year-old male driver, and his passengers – a 67-year-old woman, 42-year-old woman, 12-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl – were all taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with minor injuries. Three other drivers who had been hit by the MG – a 65-year-old man in a grey BYD sedan, a 26-year-old woman in a white Toyota Corolla and a 26-year-old woman in a silver Toyota Yaris – were not injured. Paramedics treated the 28-year-old MG SUV driver at the scene before he was taken to St Vincent's Hospital for further assessment and mandatory testing. He was charged later on Monday evening with driving in a dangerous manner and his licence was suspended. He was issued a court attendance notice to appear at Newtown Local Court on the Monday 4 August 2025. One witness told Nine News the crash sounded 'like a bomb'. The 20-year-old man who had stepped in to pull the driver from his vehicle was subsequently arrested after police alleged he attempted to interfere with their investigations. He has also been accused of the assault of a female constable. Footage shows him helping the driver from the car and waiting near the wreckage as paramedics assess him before he is then seen being restrained by an officer on the ground. It is understood he was a passenger in the MG. The 20-year-old was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment, where he allegedly assaulted a male constable and security staff while under police guard. He was released from the hospital before he was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty. The man was also charged with assaulting a police officer in execution of duty without aggravated bodily harm and assaulting a frontline emergency worker – no actual bodily harm.
