Hijacking of meat delivery truck ends with arrested suspects facing the heat

A group of thieves planning to profit from hijacking a meat delivery truck got cooked after a joint operation by SAPS units led to their arrest and the recovery of meat valued at almost R20,000. Police spokesperson Capt Andre Beetge said the truck was hijacked by five armed suspects on Friday at about 4.15pm along the R75 near Bayland, while en route to Despatch. 'The suspects forced the driver and two assistants into their vehicle and later abandoned them in Kwazakhele.' Beetge said by 5.20pm, SAPS K9 unit members located the hijacked truck abandoned and empty in Milner Avenue, Sydenham. In a co-ordinated operation involving the SAPS K9 unit, stock theft unit, provincial serious violent crime investigation unit, and crime intelligence, the subsequent investigations led to the arrests. 'On [Friday], premises in Hart Road, Sidwell, were searched, resulting in the discovery of two front quarters of stolen meat [estimated value R9,000]. 'A 30-year-old man was arrested for possession of stolen property. 'Five additional undocumented men [aged 25 to 37] were arrested at the scene and detained at SAPS Algoa Park.' The next morning, at about 8am, a tavern in Jijana Street, Wells Estate, was also searched. 'Two additional front quarters of meat [valued at R9,000] were recovered and confiscated, though no arrests were made. 'On Monday, at 3.30pm, SAPS K9 members confiscated a Nissan eight-tonne cooling truck and arrested a 25-year-old man at premises in Military Road, Central. 'The truck is linked to the hijacking and was allegedly used to transport stolen meat. This suspect faces charges under the original hijacking case.' He said the investigation was ongoing. Sedibeng mayor facing suspension found unharmed after alleged hijacking and kidnapping

Sedibeng mayor Lerato Maloka and her driver were found unharmed after they were allegedly hijacked and kidnapped from Alberton on the East Rand on Friday. Gauteng police spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili said the owner of a house Maloka and her driver were leaving from reported the hijacking. 'Preliminary reports suggest the owner of the house reported the matter to an individual who then informed the mayor's husband. The husband went to report the matter at Dawn Park police station.' A broadcast was issued for her vehicle. 'The vehicle was recovered at about midnight in Dawn Park by Katlehong police. A few hours later at about 2am, the mayor and the driver were found unharmed and reunited with their families.' Muridili said statements would be taken from the victims and police were looking for the suspects. The incident comes as Maloka faced a disciplinary investigation into alleged misconduct this week. DA Sedibeng caucus leader Cllr Sibusiso Dyonase said in a statement on Thursday the council had resolved to write to Gauteng MEC for co-operative governance and traditional affairs Jacob Mamabolo calling for Maloka's immediate suspension. ' Maloka has long been a problematic figure, today's resolution centres around her and other municipal officials' misdeeds in wasting more than R500,000 on a trip to Germany. Prominently, her role in the destruction of the mayoral vehicle featured as part of today's proceedings. Sugar was found in the engine of the car after the council forced her to use the R490,000 vehicle.' Dyonase said Maloka had called for a full investigation into maladministration in her administration while claiming she was the target of a smear campaign. TimesLIVE

Online brokerage account hijacks in Japan highlight need for login vigilance

The hijacking of online brokerage accounts has suddenly become a problem in Japan, as the deep-pocketed and unsuspecting are targeted and their portfolios commandeered to manipulate the market. For January and February, the Financial Services Agency reported 72 unauthorized online brokerage transactions. In March and April, that number was 3,400. The Japan Securities Dealers Association said on Wednesday that it had confirmed hijacking cases at 16 brokerages, including major companies like SBI Securities and Rakuten Securities, and warned that alleged cyber crooks are now targeting users of smaller securities companies.
