Fire breaks out in two-storey Newmarket building, firefighter injured
'Fire line do not cross' tape at a scene in this file image. Six fire trucks and two dozen firefighters responded to reports of a fire in Newmarket Wednesday morning. Crews arrived to the two-storey residential building on Eagle Street to find smoke coming from the first floor. Firefighters discovered the smoke coming from the unit where the fire is believed to have started, and also in the neighbouring attached unit. They smoke alarms were sounding as fire crews evacuated the building. One firefighter had to be treated at a local hospital for an undisclosed injury. He has since been released. Eagle Street was temporarily closed to traffic as a result of the emergency response. It has since reopened. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical, according to officials. The extent of the damage was not provided. "Electrical equipment is a leading cause of home fires in Ontario," the fire service stated. 'In the event of an emergency, working smoke alarms and a home escape plan can save lives.'
