‘Pasar malam' trader jailed 30 months after breaking into ex-Kedah MB Ahmad Bashah's home, stealing grass cutter

ALOR SETAR, June 5 — A pasar malam trader selling children's toys was sentenced to 30 months' jail and fined RM1,500 by the Magistrate's Court here yesterday after pleading guilty to breaking into the home of ex-Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah last week. Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah also ordered the night market trader, T Rakesh Kumar, 44, to serve an additional six months' jail if he defaulted on the fine. According to the charge, the accused was alleged to have committed housebreaking by entering the residence of the former Kedah Menteri Besar and stealing a grass-cutting machine at Taman Rakyat here at 2.50am on May 29. For the offence, he was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code and punishable under the same section, which provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping. Earlier, the accused, who was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation counsel Aina Shafina Idrus Saidi, appealed for a lenient sentence, citing that he is married, has no fixed income, and is responsible for supporting his wife and parents. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Sharmila Md Asri urged the court to impose a commensurate punishment as the offence was a repeat case and the accused had previous convictions for similar offences. — Bernama

The Mpumalanga high court on Tuesday sentenced former traffic officer Abednego Desmond Mbuyane to 12 years' imprisonment for housebreaking and murdering his wife's boyfriend, Thamsanqa Sbusiso Nkosi. The conviction of Mbuyane, 39, relates to an incident on April 15 2023 at Kwanyoni Lodge in Nelspruit. 'T he accused became suspicious of his wife's whereabouts after multiple unanswered phone calls. He tracked the vehicle she was driving using a GPS tracking device, which led him to the lodge,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said. Upon arrival, he identified the room where the vehicle was parked. He forcibly entered by kicking the door open and found his wife and the deceased. 'An altercation ensued, prompting the wife and Nkosi to flee the room. The accused pursued the deceased and fatally shot him in the head and shoulder before fleeing the scene.' Mbuyane later handed himself over to police. In sentencing, the court considered that the accused had been in custody since his arrest. SINGAPORE: After the Singapore Police Force was alerted to a case of housebreaking and theft at a residential unit along Jurong West Street 93 last weekend, a 27-year-old man was arrested. At around 7:55 a.m. on May 31, the police received an alert after a man had broken into the unit earlier that day and stolen cash amounting to S$55 and RM168 (S$50). He was also said to have taken printed copies of S$193 Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers. Within four hours of receiving the alert, officers from Jurong Police Division, Clementi Police Division, and Police Operations Command Centre were able to identify and arrest the man. His identity was determined through the aid of Police cameras and CCTV footage, and he was arrested along Jurong East Street 32. Upon his arrest, the cash and CDC vouchers were recovered from the man's possession, the SPF said. He was charged on Monday (Jun 2) with the offence of housebreaking to commit theft under Section 451 of the Penal Code 1871. If he is convicted of housebreaking to commit an offence, he faces a jail sentence of up to 10 years, as well as a fine. News reports that followed have identified the man as Muhammad Hizwan Hashim, adding that he was convicted on a similar charge of housebreaking in 2016. He is said to have entered the premises of the unit at Jurong West Street 93 shortly after 3 a.m. on May 31, unlocking the window grills in the living room so he could gain access to the unit. After he was convicted in 2016, he was ordered to undergo reformative training, which included strict discipline, drills, and counselling, according to a report in the Malay Mail. His case is scheduled to be mentioned again on Jun 30. 'The Police would like to advise all house owners to adopt the following crime prevention measures: Secure all doors, roller shutters, windows, grills, and other openings with good-quality grilles and close-shackle padlocks when leaving your premises unattended, even for a short while. Refrain from keeping large sums of cash and valuables in your premises; and Install a burglar alarm, motion sensor lights, and/ or CCTVs to cover the access points into your premises. Ensure that they are tested periodically and are in good working condition,' the SPF said in its Jun 1 statement. /TISG See also Food delivery rider caught on cam stealing iPhone Read also: Girl, 16, teams up with boys ages 12-15 to beat up & rob a taxi driver, and steal cigarettes from a coffee shop

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have taken down a housebreaking gang known as 'Geng Amy' with the arrests of four men, including its mastermind 'Amy', in a special operation around Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on Monday. Harian Metro reported Kota Kinabalu police chief Kasim Muda as saying the success came after they received reports of housebreakings in Luyang and Jalan Penampang, with losses of over RM10,000. He said investigations led to the arrest of a suspect on Jalan Gaya at 3.40pm on Monday, along with the seizure of a hard disk, a crowbar and clothing. 'The suspect, in his 30s, is a local man. His arrest led to the arrests of the other three members on the same day in separate raids. 'Both cases are being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking,' he said at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters today. Kasim said the gang had been active in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Papar, Kudat and Sandakan, targeting quiet residential areas and moving in groups of three to four in rented cars. 'All the suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime and have been remanded for further investigation. 'Urine tests found two of them positive for methamphetamine use,' he said. Kasim said police are now hunting for one more gang member, known only as 'Pindil', and expressed confidence the man would be arrested soon.
