Nick Offerman slams homophobic Ron Swanson meme: 'Ron was best man at a gay wedding'

Nick Offerman slams homophobic Ron Swanson meme: 'Ron was best man at a gay wedding' Show Caption Hide Caption 'Mission: Impossible 8': Tom Cruise saves day at sea and in skies Superspy Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) needs to stop a rogue AI from taking over the world in "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning." Nick Offerman has no time for homophobic Ron Swanson memes. The actor, 54, took to X to call out a post from Michael Flynn Jr., son of former national security advisor Michael Flynn, that used his "Parks and Recreation" character to express opposition to Pride Month. Flynn's post included a clip of Ron Swanson throwing a computer in the trash, but with a rainbow flag superimposed over the computer. "Just wanted to post how I feel about 'pride' month," Flynn wrote. In response, Offerman slammed Flynn as "dumb," while pointing out that Ron Swanson "was best man at a gay wedding." The Emmy-winning actor added, "#HappyPride." In the series finale of "Parks and Recreation," which aired in 2015, Ron serves as best man in his hairdresser Typhoon's (Rodney To) wedding to Craig (Billy Eichner). An earlier episode had shown that Ron took an instant liking to Typhoon after being introduced to him by his colleague Donna (Retta). Nick Offerman slams 'homophobic hate' for his 'Last of Us' episode This isn't Offerman's first time calling out homophobia. In 2023, the "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning" actor starred in an acclaimed episode of "The Last of Us" as Bill, a gruff survivalist who falls in love with Frank, played by Murray Bartlett. Speaking with i News, Offerman shared that he received "a lot of homophobic hate" about the episode via social media, despite critics hailing it as a highlight of the season. "I was kinda fascinated by how openly people will express hate and brand themselves as bigots," he told the outlet. "I kept thinking: 'We can see you!'" Nick Offerman gets philosophical on Mother Nature in new book: 'We're all the same batch of molecules' When Offerman won a Film Independent Spirit Award for the role in 2024, he called out this homophobic hate in his speech. "When homophobic hate comes my way and says, 'Why did you have to make it a gay story?' we say, 'Because you ask questions like that,'" he said, adding, "It's not a gay story, it's a love story."

A stone quarry collapse in Indonesia's West Java province has left several people dead and many more wounded or trapped, according to officials and local media. Two people were killed and at least 10 were trapped in the rubble when the mine in Cirebon district collapsed, West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said in a video statement. The exact number of casualties was still unclear as local television reported rescuers were able to pull at least a dozen injured people from the debris and recover bodies during a grueling search effort. There were nine dead so far, Indonesia's iNews reported, with dozens more people and vehicles feared buried. Police, emergency personnel, soldiers and volunteers were trying to locate any remaining workers. Their efforts were hampered by unstable soil that risked further slides, the television report said. This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow. This article includes reporting by The Associated Press.

Video shows capsized ferry in Indonesia's West Kalimantan province, not Sulawesi

"A ferry capsized at the Parepare Port, I hope there are no fatalities," reads an Indonesian-language Facebook post on April 25, 2025. The post includes a video showing people witnessing a ship slowly capsizing. Some voices yelling "God is Great" in Arabic are heard in the background. Image Screenshot of the misinformation post, captured on April 29, 2025 The same video was shared elsewhere on Facebook after a boat carrying eight passengers capsized due to extreme weather in the waters of Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi. Indonesian media organisation Detik reported there were no fatalities during the accident (archived link). However, there are no official reports of a ferry capsizing at Parepare Port as of May 22. A combination of Google reverse image and keyword searches found the same clip used in a news report by Indonesian broadcaster iNews on February 21, 2021 about a ferry sinking in West Kalimantan's Perigi Piai Port (archived link). The circulating video can be seen at the 14-second mark of the video report, which says the the ship lost balance as passengers disembarked from one side and the docking rope broke. Image Screenshot comparison between the false post (left) and the iNews video The video matches Google Maps imagery of Perigi Piai port, 1,300 kilometres (807 miles) away from Parepare port in Sulawesi (archived link). A video of the accident has also been geotagged at Perigi Piai port (archived link). Indonesian newspaper Kompas published a similar photo of the accident on February 20, 2021 (archived link).

Months-old video of multi-vehicle pileup resurfaces online ahead of Eid travel rush

"Dozens of victims were stuck inside the cars," reads Indonesian-language text on a Facebook reel on March 27, 2025. "Multiple accident at Cipularang toll road. The fate of mudik travelers," says the caption. The video of a multi-vehicle collision surfaced on Facebook as millions in Muslim-majority Indonesian embarked on the annual "Mudik" travel rush back to their hometowns to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The Cipularang Toll Road connects the Indonesian capital Jakarta to Bandung, the capital of West Java province. The lengthy motorway has seen numerous fatal accidents (archived link). Posts making a similar claim about an accident on the motorway on March 28 shared a similar video, taken from a different angle. "For those who are on mudik, please be careful. This accident happened this afternoon," says the text on the video. But both videos circulated months before Eid Al-Fitr, which began on March 30. The Purwakarta Transportation Agency told AFP on April 9 that the video "was an accident that happened last year". An accident on April 8 along the stretch of the Cipularang toll road that passed through Purwakarta Regency killed one person, local media reported (archived link). But the videos circulating online depict a different incident, said the Ministry of State Owned Enterprises (BUMN), which manages toll roads. Reverse image and keyword searches on Google found the first video featured in reports by Indonesian news outlets iNews and Kompas TV about an accident on November 11, 2024 (archived links here and here). "The scene of the multi-vehicle collision at the Cipularang Toll Road," read the iNews report on the same day. State news agency Antara said the accident involving 18 vehicles killed one person and injured at least 23 others (archived link). The second video of the accident also circulated on Instagram here and here on November 11, 2024 (archived links here and here).
