Finally! WhatsApp gives into one of its ‘biggest requests' – could Instagram follow?
Hell has frozen over. Well at least that's what it seemed like would have to happen before WhatsApp launched….an iPad app for Apple's popular tablet. And it's available now through the App Store. Yes, 15 years after the debut of Apple's tablet and 16 years after the launch of the independent WhatsApp (before it was swallowed by Meta) we finally have what the company itself admits was one of its 'biggest requests'. And no wonder. According to DataReportal, WhatsApp is used by around a quarter of the world's population. Over 2bn people. Yep. So the question remains why it has taken so long to do an app for the world's most popular tablet. Head of WhatsApp Will Cathcart stated in a 2022 interview with The Verge that 'people have wanted an iPad app for a long time… We'd love to do it'. Clearly not so much as to do it within the last three years, leaving iPad users in the odd place of having to use WhatsApp through the browser. And that's even though the app has been available natively on macOS for some years (used as a paired device with your phone) and was revamped in 2023 alongside the Windows equivalent. Could it have been that Meta didn't want to make it easy for the iPad to grow among its users, harboring hopes of its own tablet range? Or is it simply that the app was traditionally tied to a phone number? Perhaps, but maybe we won't find out until the email appears as part of some future court case or other public record. In any case, the iPad app is the same app you'll know and love from your iOS or Android phone so you can message all those time-consuming groups and make video and audio calls with up to 32 people, share your screen. You can once again use both front and back cameras. It also works with the iPad's multitasking capabilities including Split View and Slide Over as well as the much-maligned Stage Manager so you can use another app while you're on a video call or sending a message. As the WhatsApp blog post states, Stage Manager is available on iPad Pro with M4, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later) and iPad Air (5th generation), iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and later), iPad Air 13-inch (M2 and later). Oh, and WhatsApp also works with Apple Pencil as well as any Bluetooth keyboard or Magic Keyboard as you'd expect.

Apple's Self Service Repair program now extends to iPad
Apple's increasingly comprehensive Self Service Repair program now includes iPad too. Starting tomorrow, owners of various models of Apple's slate can easily acquire official parts, repair manuals, and tools that allow them to attempt their own repairs, should they feel confident enough. Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting sessions are also available. This web-based tool, launched in the US back in 2023, is able to directly test for a number of common issues that affect displays, software, audio, camera tech and Face ID, and offer a step-by-step repair process for the diagnosed problem. Previously, these diagnostic tests could only be carried out by Apple authorized service providers. For now, the supported iPad models are the iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro) and the entry-level iPad (A16). Apple says it will offer components including displays, batteries, cameras and external charging ports to be used in repairs for out-of-warranty products. The Self Service Repair Program debuted in 2022 and Apple has been gradually bolstering the range of included product lines ever since. Parts for a number of iPhone and Mac models are already offered through the service, so iPad was the logical next step. As well as the Apple-endorsed Self Service Repair Store , Apple also recently launched its Genuine Parts Distributor Program , which essentially allows repair businesses and professionals without an existing service relationship with Apple to order parts and components through third-party distributors such as MobileSentrix. WhatsApp Comes To iPad At Last: Here's Why They're A Dream Combo
WhatsApp launched in 2009, but there's never been a native app for the iPad —until now. On Tuesday, May 27, WhatsApp revealed that the new app is here. Here's what makes the iPad and WhatsApp so great together. WhatsApp comes to the iPad. Finally. Meta In a blog post, WhatsApp described it as 'one of our biggest requests,' and declared that the app is now available on iPad. The company was keen to point out that all the key features are here, such as making 'video and audio calls with up to 32 people, share your screen, and use both front and back cameras,' it said. There's no clue as to exactly what took so long — parent company Meta has been teasing that the app would be coming soon, and I've personally been agitating for its arrival for at least four years. But let's look on the bright side, it's here now, and maybe the wait until is good news (except for the impatient among us). That's because the iPad's features have been growing recently, with the addition of multitasking capabilities such as Stage Manager, though this is not on all iPads. WhatsApp notes that 'Stage Manager is available on iPad Pro with M4, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later) and iPad Air (5th generation), iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and later), iPad Air 13-inch (M2 and later),' and you'll notice that the regular iPad is not admitted to the Stage Manager party. Still, there's also Split View and Slide Over to allow you to have WhatsApp open alongside another app, allowing you to surf the web at the same time as messaging on WhatsApp. Optimized for the larger display of the iPad, the new WhatsApp app works with the Magic Keyboard, so it's as easy to type messages as it is on the Mac, but also, uniquely, with the Apple Pencil. It remains as secure as ever: 'protecting your personal messages, calls and media with end-to-end encryption, no matter what platform or device you're messaging. Our extra layers of privacy, such as chat lock, mean that you can have private conversations in confidence even if you share your iPad with others,' WhatsApp says. These capabilities together make for a seamlessly smooth experience, besting the iPhone for screen real estate and the Mac for touchscreen capabilities. What's not to like?
