Mauritania's Foreign Minister Calls for Strong Economic Blocs in the Arab World

By Ahmad El-Assasy Mauritania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, emphasized the urgent need to establish robust economic blocs within the Arab world to drive unity and regional integration. His remarks came during the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. In his keynote address, Ould Merzoug highlighted that enhanced economic and developmental cooperation among Arab nations is a key pillar for strengthening inter-Arab ties and advancing shared prosperity. He underscored Mauritania's commitment to accelerating regional economic integration, noting that stronger economic alliances can significantly boost Arab unity. 'The formation of powerful economic groupings is fundamental for achieving deeper cooperation and fostering sustainable development across the Arab world,' he said. Ould Merzoug also stressed the importance of expanding investment partnerships across Arab countries, leveraging available opportunities to support comprehensive development and mutual well-being. As part of this vision, the Mauritanian Foreign Minister proposed a new initiative focused on developing the "blue economy"—a sector he believes holds vast untapped potential for Arab nations. He called for enhanced regional collaboration to sustainably harness marine resources, which can become a long-term engine for economic growth and job creation. 'The Arab world possesses immense maritime wealth. Through coordinated efforts, we can transform these resources into sustainable growth avenues,' Ould Merzoug added. President Tebboune Defends Solidarity with Wounded Arab Countries

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said on Saturday that sustainable development in the Arab region must be based on the principle of solidarity with sister Arab countries suffering from crises and wars. Tebboune highlighted Algeria's commitment to actively participating in various initiatives to strengthen Arab cooperation, embodying economic integration. In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, during the fifth session of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, held in Baghdad, President Tebboune said: 'Discussions about sustainable development in the Arab region must be based on the principle of solidarity with the wounded countries of our nation, starting with occupied Palestine and extending to the rest of the sister Arab countries suffering from the scourges of crises, conflicts, and wars.' He explained that 'the security and prosperity of our Arab region will only be achieved through the recovery of these countries, the elimination of the injustice and oppression imposed upon them, and their return to the path of stability, growth, and prosperity.' He reiterated Algeria's commitment to contributing to Arab economic integration. He also stressed that 'achieving Arab economic integration must not remain a deferred dream passed down from generation to generation. Despite the growth achieved in recent years, intra-Arab trade still does not exceed 8% of the total trade of Arab countries with the rest of the world. The same applies to inter-Arab investments, which also experience unfair disparities from one Arab country to another, with their low figures.' The President of the Algerian Republic emphasised that the fundamental components for achieving Arab economic integration include 'the full implementation of the Arab Free Trade Area, the development of inter-Arab transport networks, and the creation of banking, financial, and insurance mechanisms.' He considered that the goals of economic construction and sustainable development are 'closely linked to the requirements of Arab national security and to our responsibility to enhance the capabilities of Arab peoples, with both current and future generations.' In a related context, he asserted that 'Algeria is keen to be an active player in various economic initiatives aimed at strengthening rapprochement and cooperation among Arab countries,' pointing to its accession to the Arab Free Trade Area in 2009, its contribution to building various Arab financing and investment institutions, and its support for land, sea, air, and even energy connectivity projects. The President Tebboune concluded, 'My country emphasises the need for all Arab countries not to fall behind in the revolutions currently taking place, particularly in the fields of renewable energy, digitisation, artificial intelligence, robotics, and nanotechnology.'

King Mohammed VI Advocates for Strengthened Arab Cooperation at Baghdad Summit

Rabat — Morocco's King Mohammed VI has pledged his country's full support for initiatives to enhance joint Arab action, aiming to fulfill the aspirations of Arab peoples for greater security, stability, progress, and prosperity. Addressing the 34th Summit of the Arab League in Baghdad on Saturday, the Moroccan King stressed the importance of collective efforts to tackle pressing regional challenges, including food and energy price surges, water scarcity, and climate change impacts. 'In these exceptional, sensitive, and difficult circumstances surrounding this important Summit, we must demonstrate sincere political will, guided by faith in building a common project, adherence to good neighborliness principles, and respect for states' national sovereignty and territorial integrity,' King Mohammed VI said in his speech, delivered by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The King's speech reflected Morocco's 'principle of non-interference in others' internal affairs and refraining from harboring separatist movements' as the basis of Arab countries' collective action for stability, security, and prosperity. Arab league reform is essential King Mohammed VI explained that Arab nations' meaningful progress requires completing the long-standing reform process of the Arab League. While pointing to organizational transformation as a prerequisite for effective regional cooperation, the King said that 'joint Arab action cannot be fully effective unless the reform of our Organization, initiated years ago, is completed in a manner that meets the aspirations of our countries and ensures harmony and concord.' Economic integration challenges Speaking of the economic prosperity of Arab countries, King Mohammed VI called for robust inter-Arab economic and commercial partnerships to create broader development opportunities. His speech outlined major sectors of cooperation, including renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. The King referred to these as critical areas for investment to 'boost development efforts, ensure transition toward green and sustainable economic models, and align with global evolutionary dynamics.' 'We can only deplore, once again, that the Arab Maghreb Union fails to fulfill its natural role as a lever for common development among Maghreb countries by ensuring, notably, the free movement of people, capital, goods, and services between its five member states,' the King added, expressing frustration with the lack of regional economic integration. Diplomatic approach to regional crises Addressing the 'painful and deplorable' situations affecting several Arab nations, King Mohammed VI affirmed Morocco's commitment to contributing to resolving regional conflicts through peaceful means. 'Morocco will spare no effort to halt any form of division by contributing to the resolution of crises embroiling the Arab region,' he noted, explaining that the North African country's approach prioritizes 'dialogue and peaceful initiatives over the logic of force and military options.' To show Morocco's active role in resolving regional crises, the King recalled the country's active participation in mediation efforts during the Libyan crisis. As Arab leaders continue their deliberations in Baghdad, King Mohammed VI's message reflects Morocco's vision of Arab cooperation built on mutual respect, territorial integrity, and collaborative development.
