Sonic boom heard over Essex as RAF intercept private jet
A sonic boom was heard over Essex after two RAF fighter jets scrambled to intercept a private jet. Two Typhoon jets took off from RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, to make the intercept of a San Marino -registered aircraft over Cambridgeshire on Friday morning, the BBC reported. Residents of southern Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Kent and parts of London reported hearing the loud bang at around 11.35am. A sonic boom occurs when an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound, generating shockwaves that rapidly compress and decompress the air. An RAF spokesperson said the civilian aircraft was safely escorted to Stansted Airport after it suffered a communications failure. 'We can confirm that RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Typhoon fighter aircraft from RAF Coningsby were launched today to investigate a civilian aircraft which was not in contact with air traffic control,' they said.

Sonic boom over Essex as RAF intercepts private jet
A sonic boom was heard over southern England after two RAF fighter jets scrambled to intercept a private jet. Two Typhoon jets from RAF Coningsby were dispatched to make the intercept over Cambridgeshire. Residents of southern Essex posted on social media that they heard sonic booms as the fighters passed overheard from the Lincolnshire air base, indicating they broke the speed of sound. An MoD source said the emergency interception was ordered after the business jet suffered a communications failure. The jets intercepted a Bombardier Global Express registered T7-SGH, indicating its state of registry is San Marino, a landlocked small country in Italy. The jet was escorted to land at Stansted, where it taxied to a remote stand on the northern side of the airport away from the main passenger terminals. Scheduled airline flights resumed takeoffs and landings as normal. An RAF spokesman confirmed that RAF Quick Reaction Alert aircraft were launched this morning, but refused to offer further details 'because this is an ongoing mission'. Stansted Airport, the Department for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority have all been contacted for comment. While the security threat posed by the business jet is not yet known, the Emir of Dubai's personal Boeing 747 – flying under the callsign Dubai 1 – has just landed at Stansted, but it is not believed the emir himself is aboard the jet.

Chinese fighter jet comes within 200ft of Philippine plane in mid-air standoff
This is the moment a Chinese fighter jet appears to intercept a Philippine Coast Guard aircraft carrying journalists during a patrol near Scarborough Shoal. Footage onboard the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) plane shows the jet flying within 200 feet, circling and matching the aircraft's course for 20 minutes. Chinese navy ships below can be heard demanding the aircraft 'leave immediately' on the cockpit radio. It happened around the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, a disputed atoll 140 miles west of the Philippines. At least four Chinese coast guard vessels, suspected 'maritime militia' ships, and two U.S. warships were nearby. The incident comes after a Beijing warship accidentally crashed into a smaller PCG ship on Monday (11 August) in the same area. China claims almost the entire South China Sea despite a 2016 tribunal ruling rejecting its claims.
