Woman endures jail time after stunning escalation in battle with HOA: 'Never heard of anything like this in my life'

Woman endures jail time after stunning escalation in battle with HOA: 'Never heard of anything like this in my life' A suburban mom in Florida spent a week in jail after her HOA went after her for grass violations. It was a shocking overreach, and one of the worst encounters a person has had with an HOA. According to WFTS ABC Action News, Irena Green, a resident of Riverview in Hillsborough County, initially received notices for her browning grass. She said it was impacted by the shade from a tree in her yard and further dried out due to a drought that came with water restrictions. Green also received notices for a dirty mailbox and a commercial cargo van. Green apparently failed to respond to the HOA's request for mediation, so they slapped her with a lawsuit. After a court hearing, a judge ordered her to fix her grass and the other issues within 30 days. She completed the directions in the order, but she missed a follow-up court date and was later arrested while driving her teenage daughter home from cheerleading practice. She served seven days in jail with no bond, and only after her sister-in-law helped with a petition and she had a hearing with a new judge was she released. The HOA even opposed her release at the hearing. "I think they have way too much power," Green told the outlet. "I've never heard of anything like this in my life." HOAs have become notorious for their rigid guidelines, often becoming a burden on top of their fees and the cost of home ownership. Many homeowners have been cited for not watering their lawns despite drought restrictions — not unlike Green — as well as for not having a typical monoculture lawn. But having a native lawn is actually a huge money- and time-saver, requiring less water than a standard lawn. HOAs have also cracked down on gardens, whether simple flower beds or homegrown vegetables. That's unfortunate, because gardening has been proven to have a multitude of benefits, including improvements in physical and mental health, reduced grocery expenses through growing some of your own food, and opportunities for a healthier environment that supports pollinators and other wildlife. Do you think the government should ban gas-powered lawn tools? No way Definitely Only certain tools I don't know Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Green is still dealing with the humiliation of being arrested over a little patch of grass. "It makes me feel horrible," she said. "I work hard to buy this home for me and my kids in a better neighborhood and environment, and to be taken to jail and to be treated like that for brown grass at my own horrible." BREAKING NEWS Chiefs star Rashee Rice gets jail sentence for fleeing Dallas car crash that left several people injured

Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has been sentenced to five years' probation and 30 days of jail time over his 2024 hit-and-run crash that was captured on viral video on a Dallas highway. The jail term can be served at any time over the next five years, according to ESPN, which was the first outlet to report the news. The NFL is expected to discipline Rice, who could receive a multi-game suspension after he was seen attempting to run away from the multi-vehicle crash last year. Rice was renting a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle that authorities said was one of two speeding sports cars that caused a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway, an attorney for the company that owns the vehicle said in 2024. The occupants of the Lamborghini and the other speeding vehicle — a Corvette — left without determining if anyone needed medical attention or providing their information, police said. A total of six vehicles were involved in the crash. A spokesman for the rental company, The Classic Lifestyle, said the Lamborghini rents for about $1,750 a day and is worth about $250,000. Police said the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far-left lane of North Central Expressway when they lost control. The Lamborghini went onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain-reaction collision. Four people in the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries. After his client was seen fleeing the scene of the accident, attorney and state senator Royce West said Rice would 'take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly.' Rice, a member of the Super Bowl LVIII-winning Chiefs team, is from the Dallas area. He played for Southern Methodist University and grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills.

Man sentenced after fleeing moving taxi on Highway 400 leaving behind handguns, drugs, and cash

A 25-year-old Sudbury man is facing jail time after an incident in 2023 that shut down Highway 400 and resulted in the seizure of cash, narcotics, and firearms. On Sept., 16, 2023, provincial police out of Orillia responded to a weapons call along Highway 400 near Mount St. Louis Road. The call came after a taxi driver said that a passenger, heading to Sudbury, had demanded to flee the moving vehicle. The man got out on the side of the highway and left behind $18,000, cocaine, and a loaded handgun in the back of the cab. Provincial police launched a search operation. Members of the OPP Emergency Response Team, rescue units, OPP Canine Unit, and York Regional Police Air Support Unit assisted in shutting down both directions of Highway 400. During the search, officers found another loaded handgun close by, along with a large quantity of suspected cocaine and additional cash. At roughly 2:30 a.m. the next day, officers received a report of a suspicious person walking along the highway. Police ended up arresting the man shortly after, confirming it was the same suspect linked to the taxi incident. The investigation led to multiple charges including careless storage of a firearm, tampering with the serial number of a firearm, failure to comply with probation order and a plethora of other charges. The man was sentenced to 868 days in custody, a weapons order for 10 years, and a DNA order.
