'Controlling' husband who murdered wife as she pushed their baby in pram in Bradford jailed

A man who killed his wife as she pushed their seven-month-old baby in a pram has been handed a life sentence, with a minimum term of 28 years. Habibur Masum, 26, was last month found guilty of murdering Kulsuma Akter, 27, in a "ferocious" knife attack after tracing her to a refuge she was staying in to escape his "violence, jealousy and controlling behaviour", a court heard. He was also found guilty of one count of assault, one of making threats to kill and one charge of stalking. Ms Akter suffered more than 25 knife injuries after Masum found her through her phone location and confronted her in a street in Bradford, West Yorkshire, on 6 April last year. After fleeing the scene, Masum boarded a bus and CCTV footage showed him smiling, prosecutor Steve Wood KC told Bradford Crown Court. He was arrested after a four-day manhunt, having been found 150 miles away in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, where he and Ms Akter lived when they first came to the UK from Bangladesh. He had already pleaded guilty to manslaughter and possession of a knife but denied murder, claiming he had intended to kill himself in front of his wife but "totally lost control". In a victim impact statement read to the court on Tuesday, Ms Akter's brother Imran Hussain said he "cannot comprehend that this has happened" to his "baby sister". "My parents still struggle with losing their daughter, their youngest daughter, their baby," he added. "There is now such a deep, painful void in our lives. "She did not deserve what she experienced at the hands of Masum. "This for us will be a life sentence." Please refresh the page for the latest version.

BREAKING NEWS Wannabe influencer who stabbed wife to death in 'ferocious' knife attack while pushing their baby son's pram is jailed for 28 years

A wannabe influencer who slit his wife's throat as she pushed their son's pram has been jailed for 28 years. Habibur Masum, 27, was found guilty of the murder of Kulsuma Akter in a 'ferocious' knife attack in broad daylight before leaving her bleeding to death and calmly walking away on April 6 last year. She was stabbed 26 times and stamped on by 'controlling' Masum in a 'brutal and merciless' attack in front of their seven-month-old son. Jurors at his trial heard Masum followed Ms Akter to a refuge in Bradford where she had been staying to escape him after he held a knife to her throat at their home in Greater Manchester. After finding her through her phone location, Masum loitered in streets around the hostel and sent her messages threatening to kill her family members if she did not return to him, before trying to lure her out by sending her fake messages from a local GP practice pretending their son had an appointment. The court heard Ms Akter eventually felt safe enough to leave the refuge after Masum updated his Facebook page falsely claiming to be in Spain. As she was walking in the city centre with a friend, pushing her baby in a pram, Masum confronted her, the trial heard. CCTV footage of the attack captured Ms Akter's screams as Masum stabbed her at least 25 times. Jurors heard he then calmly walked through Bradford city centre and was seen on CCTV grinning as he got on a bus, believing at that point he was getting away. Habibur Masum, 27, was found guilty of murdering Kulsuma Akter in a 'ferocious' knife attack in broad daylight The trial heard the relationship between Masum and Ms Akter was 'an abusive relationship characterised by his jealousy, possessiveness and controlling behaviour'. The couple met and married in Bangladesh, and came to the UK in 2022 after he obtained a student visa and enrolled on a Masters course to study marketing. They moved into a house in Oldham together in September 2022. On November 23 2023, he became jealous over a 'completely innocuous' message Ms Akter received from a male colleague and held a knife to her throat. He was arrested and Ms Akter decided to leave him, being moved to the Bradford refuge by Oldham social services in January 2024. But Masum continued to pursue her and tracked Ms Akter to the refuge through her phone location, and she had been due to move but went out walking with a friend on the day she died after Masum's brother told her he was in Spain. Masum also put photos on Facebook claiming he was in Spain in a bid to trick his estranged wife from leaving the refuge. He then travelled almost 200 miles south to Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, to carry out the 'merciless' attack in broad daylight. Masum was arrested in the early hours of April 9 in a car park near Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he had gone to be treated for 'lockjaw'.

Four teenagers arrested after knife attack left man's arm amputated

Police have arrested four teenagers after a knife attack in Melbourne's southwest, which left a man's arm needing to be amputated. Officers were called to the Altona Meadows Central Square Shopping Centre about 8pm on Saturday. It is alleged the victim was approached by a group of males and pushed to the ground, with one of the teens allegedly producing an edged weapon and striking the victim's forearm. The Herald Sun reports the 33-year-old male victim had the lower part of an arm amputated at Royal Melbourne Hospital on Sunday. He is in a serious but non-life-threatening condition. Police allege the teenager then fled the scene with the victim's phone. A 14-year-old boy from the Wyndham area has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing injury, robbery and unlawful assault. He has been remanded to appear before a children's court. Two 15-year-old boys from the Hobsons Bay area face the same charges and have been released on bail to appear in a children's court at a later date. A 14-year-old boy, also from the Hobsons Bay area, is expected to be charged on summons. Police are continuing to search for a fifth individual believed to be involved in the alleged incident. These latest attacks come amid a spate of knife crimes at Melbourne shopping centres. A major brawl between rival gangs at a northern suburbs shopping centre in May sparked a statewide machete ban, which has already stopped stores selling them but criminalises possessing one as of September 1. Just last Monday, a 44-year-old man was stabbed in the chest and neck outside the Moonee Ponds Central shopping centre. Police said the alleged offender had a history of mental health issues. Barely an hour earlier, a 37-year-old man allegedly pulled a knife at a nearby cafe. After these two Moonee Ponds incidents, Police Minister Anthony Carbines stressed that officers were recently given more power to stop and search people for weapons without a warrant. 'We've seen a record number of edged weapons seized in the past year and that's a demonstration of the work police are doing to disrupt and dismantle crime in the community,' Mr Carbines told reporters last week. In February, two men were stabbed outside a Bunnings in Broadmeadows, allegedly over a pair of stolen headphones.

Husband who stabbed wife to death as she pushed baby in pram to be sentenced

A controlling husband who stabbed his wife to death as she pushed their baby in a pram after tracking her to a women's refuge is to be sentenced on Tuesday. Habibur Masum, 27, was found guilty of murdering Kulsuma Akter in a 'ferocious' knife attack in broad daylight before leaving her bleeding to death and calmly walking away, leaving their seven-month-old son behind. Mr Justice Cotter will set the minimum jail term for Masum's life sentence during a hearing at Bradford Crown Court. Jurors at his trial heard Masum followed Ms Akter to a refuge in Bradford where she had been staying to escape him after he held a knife to her throat at their home in Greater Manchester.
