Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado review – plucky teen explorer goes looking for lost Incan magic
If you have a bunch of eight-year-olds over for a sleepover and you're looking for something to stick on the TV, you could do worse than this straight-to-streaming live-action adaptation of the animated show Dora the Explorer. It's a follow-up of sorts to Dora and the Lost City of Gold from 2019, with a new star in the shape of Samantha Lorraine, and aimed at slightly older kids than the cartoon. There are action sequences looted from Raiders of the Lost Ark that had my eight-year-old squealing at the screen, though as it's determined to be undemanding and inoffensive, it's got that plasticky quality that middling kids' films tend to have. Lorraine plays Dora, a teenage explorer who's grown up in the Amazon, raised on her grandfather's stories about the Incas. For years, Dora has been searching for clues to find Sol Dorado, a legendary golden sun that will grant one wish, joined by her cousin Diego (Jacob Rodriguez). The scriptwriters deserve credit for resisting the temptation to bolt on a love interest; instead, we have cousin Diego in the role conventionally given to a female character: the pretty but non-essential sidekick. The movie's villain is celebrity archaeologist Camilla the Crusader (Daniella Pineda) who runs a theme park called Jungle World, where Dora and Diego have summer jobs. When the pair go off in search of Sol Dorado with their pals, Camilla dispatches a band of desperadoes to chase them through Inca tombs booby-trapped with giant bugs and spiked floors. The movie is not lacking in adventure, perhaps what's missing is a sense of fun. Dora didn't have the kids hooting with laughter like they did at the real Indiana Jones. Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado is on Paramount+ now.

Watch ‘How to Train Your Dragon' Light a Bunch of Things on Fire in This Exclusive BTS Clip
Here's an exclusive, fun look behind the scenes of Dean DeBlois' live-action How to Train Your Dragon, showcasing the stuntwork and visual artistry that went into bringing a beloved animated franchise into the real world. io9 presents a clip from How to Train Your Dragon's home release that takes us to Viking training camp. Watch as stars including Mason Thames (The Black Phone) and Nico Parker (The Last of Us) get the hang of dragon riding on their mechanical bull-like dragon stand-ins. There's lots of high-flying action and padded pratfalls. Through the use of practical stunt work and visual effects, the cast members were able to create thrilling moments that truly brought Berk and the world of dragons to life. It's neat to see creatives dig into the work that went into making the epic moments, from Toothless's first flight to the shores of Viking battles with large armies. And there were so many real people as part of the shoot, which is such a relief to see when background actors tend to get copy/pasted to give movies a larger scope. The fantasy genre has gotten an upgrade with a live action that gets a universe with dragons right. Seeing how the Viking versus dragons battles were taken from the animated film and made real is an amazing feat of filmmaking. And as no stranger to action, Gerard Butler brings his brawn into the family adventure. Between the tech and the animators getting to put their all into the craft, it makes every fight ring true. It makes us all the more excited to see the franchise continue to grow toward the even bigger worlds of Berk beyond Hiccup and Toothless' first adventure. How to Train Your Dragon will hit digital platforms on July 15 and hits physical platforms on August 12. Want more io9 news?
