Lively man becomes Greater Sudbury's newest millionaire with HSN draw win

Health Sciences North Foundation in Sudbury is guaranteeing some big prizes in its December 50-50 cash lottery draw. A man from the Greater Sudbury community of Lively has won $1,169,522, the jackpot in December's 50/50 draw in support of Health Sciences North (HSN). Bill Lynn Bill Lynn from the Greater Sudbury community of Lively has won $1,169,522, the jackpot in December's 50/50 draw in support of Health Sciences North. (Supplied) The winner is Bill Lynn. 'You're kidding,' said Lynn, when Anthony Keating, the president of the HSN Foundation called to tell him about his win. 'You just gave me a head rush there – I almost passed out.' Though the call started with Lynn describing himself as cranky, but joy could be heard in his voice after Keating told him how much he had won. 'My, my, my,' he said with a sigh. 'I am kind of baffled here.' Lynn was definitely in shock. 'It blows my mind, though,' he said. 'I'm just waiting to wake up and realize that this is a dream.' Lynn told Keating that he buys $100 worth of tickets for the 50/50 every month and that he did not think his odds of winning were very good. 'HSN saved my life a couple of times so it's not hard for me to put a few bucks every month to a good cause,' he said in a news release. When asked what he was going to spend the money on, Lynn said his youngest daughter had recently bought a house and he intends to pay it off. 'I'm looking forward to spoiling the grandkids a little and maybe spoiling myself a bit, but this kind of money can make a big difference for my family down the road, too,' he said. 'It's exciting to think about, even if I still think I'm dreaming.' When accepting the check from the HSN Foundation, Lynn said he thought he was going to cry. 'This December has been an incredible month,' said Keating. 'We just gave somebody $1,169,522 – But it has also been a great 2023. You've made a big difference in the health care of people living in northeastern Ontario.' Since its inception, the HSN Foundation's 50/50 draw has given away more than $23 Million to winners all over Ontario. Funds raised will make a difference in the lives of those living with cancer, how the tiniest patients receive specialized pediatric care and ensuring equipment is in place when needed to provide quality patient care. 'Because of you, we are able to invest in state-of-the-art equipment, invest in more research and plan for future capital development,' said Keating. 'It is because of you that we are making a bigger difference in health care for people living here in northeastern Ontario.' The January HSN 50/50 draw is live at and the jackpot is already more than $37,500. Click here for more information. Tickets for the January draw are available to purchase right now, with sales ending at 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 25. The jackpot-winning ticket will be drawn on Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. For more information on the HSN Foundation's 50/50 draws and the work they do, visit their social media page.

EuroMillions: One lucky ticket-holder could win biggest lottery in UK history as £199million set to be awarded in Tuesday's draw

One lucky ticket-holder could bag the biggest lottery win the UK has seen if they scoop the top prize in Tuesday's record EuroMillions draw. The jackpot is an estimated £199 million and would be the largest prize the UK has seen, National Lottery operator Allwyn said. No-one won the EuroMillions jackpot on Friday, meaning the top prize rolls over into Tuesday's draw. Andy Carter, Senior Winners' Adviser at Allwyn, said: 'We are now on the verge of creating the biggest National Lottery winner this country has ever seen, as the EuroMillions jackpot will be an estimated £199 million this Tuesday. 'If a single UK ticket-holder wins the lot, they'll instantly become richer than the likes of Dua Lipa and Harry Kane whilst landing at the number one spot of The National Lottery's biggest wins. 'Get your tickets early to ensure you'll be in with a chance of a massive life-changing win.' An Anonymous UK ticket-holder scooped the existing record jackpot of £195 million on July 19 2022, while just two months earlier, Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, won £184,262,899 with a Lucky Dip ticket for the draw on May 10 2022. The UK's third biggest win came after an anonymous ticket-holder scooped the £177 million jackpot in the draw on November 26 last year, while the biggest this year was £83 million in January. MailOnline also reported last month that a grieving son found his mother's winning lottery ticket three days after she had died. Liam Carter, 34, found the EuroMillions ticket folded inside an envelope, which his mother Anne and avid lottery player had heartbreakingly scrawled on the front 'Sat draw - don't forget!'. She died on April 16, aged 67, just two days before her winning numbers came up having played every week and 'never winning anything big in her life'. Mr Carter, originally from Hampshire but now living in Aberdeen, discovered the folded envelope inside her kitchen drawer, where his loving mother usually kept her tickets. 'She always said if she ever won, the money would be for me,' he said. 'And even though she never knew about this win, it really felt like something she left behind for me. Like one final gift.' The ticket had matched five main numbers — 20, 27, 35, 39 and 48 — just missing the two Lucky Stars, 03 and 08. It meant Anne had won a payout of £18,403. Mr Carter had almost ignored the ticket but said 'something told me to check'. 'I scanned it using the National Lottery app, and it said it was a winning ticket — but I'd have to call the lottery line,' he added He phoned the line last Saturday and 'just froze' when he was told of how much the winning ticket was worth. Mr Carter said: 'I must've gone quiet on the phone. It didn't feel real. She never won anything big in her life — and now this.' He added: 'She always said if she ever won, the money would be for me,' he said. 'And even though she never knew about this win, it really felt like something she left behind for me. Like one final gift.' He plans to use the money towards a deposit on a flat, something he says his mother always wanted him to achieve.

While the odds of winning the jackpot are one in over 8 million, "someone in the UAE will win the Dh100 million for sure," Bishop Woosley, director of Lottery Operations at The Game, which operates UAE Lottery, had earlier told Khaleej Times. Asked if the company was working to better the odds, Woosley had said they were looking at 'player preferences, what they play, how much they play and what games they like.' The lottery is for residents aged 18 and above in the UAE. Players are not allowed to participate in the games unless they are physically present in the country at the time of playing. As of now, the prizes are not subject to any taxes.
