Your Daily FoodScope for May 24, 2025

Do you often find yourself wondering what food to cook, how to cook it, and even that dreaded question—how much of it? It's a daily struggle for all of us, but need not be with our food horoscope. Satisfaction is only a click away! Today will be full of people who go out of their way to agitate you. It may get to you, but don't show it. Have your revenge later when the office fills with the intense aroma of your leftover pot roast and mashed potatoes lunch you'll have for lunch. And, guess what? You won't be sharing! Romantic entanglements may have you riding an emotional roller coaster today. But don't let that get in the way of completing your work. You can wallow in self-pity at home tonight with some comfort food. But eating meatloaf and mashers all alone won't have the same consoling effects. It seems as if all of your money is spent on bills. While it's good to keep your head above water, sometimes you just need to splurge. So take yourself for a seafood dinner heavy on the crab and shellfish. Just slap it on your credit card. You can always pay for it later. Today will be a very good day as everything goes your way. You could get that raise, snag a date or the weekend or win the lottery. But the best will come when your business card is pulled out of a fish bowl at the deli, and you'll win a free roast beef sub and bag of chips! Showing off your largesse doesn't always have to take the form of snatching the check at dinner, you know! Rather than flexing the plastic, show off your elaborate culinary creations to your favorite pals. Their praise will be nourishment for the soul. Find out what the cards have in store for you with your 2022 Tarot Reading. Use your free time this weekend helping others by volunteering your time at a soup kitchen. This could give an opportunity to give back to others, and to see for yourself whether the soup is of a creamy variety like chowder, or thin and brothy like chicken noodle. You'll be overwhelmed at work today but avoid curling into the fetal position. The weekend is only hours away and there's bound to be a happy hour stool with your name on it somewhere. So get together with your pals for after work beers and Buffalo wings, not necessarily in that order. You'll do a friend a favor today, but you'll expect immediate compensation. Oh, it's not money you're interested in. It's dinner at an upscale Chinatown restaurant that you're angling for. You won't know whether to have the Peking dumplings or soft fried fish, so go for both -- and the shark fin soup! A pre-work yoga session today will leave you feeling spiritual and mellow. So follow that with a breakfast that matches the serenity of the morning. Scrambled egg whites, wheat toast with marmalade and yogurt will capture your energy, and feed your spirit -- at least until lunch! The weekend can be a time of wanton eating and drinking if you're not careful. So keep your health in mind as you make plans for the next few days. Healthy snacks like fruits, nuts and trail mix will keep you energized, and possibly offset the effects of the other crap you'll bombard your body with. Be mindful of the tone of your voice when dealing with others today. Sounding sarcastic and condescending could be insulting to people, especially in public situations. So when at lunch it may be best to keep your mouth shut. It would really suck to get hit in the face with a slab of really hot lasagna. Your relationship with someone special is on the rise. This bodes well for a romantic weekend, so plan on a candle lit dinner tonight in the privacy of home. With the right music and ambience, your date might not notice that you're serving alphabet soup and American cheese sandwiches. What does your moon sign mean? 'This dish was so good I had to return to the same restaurant a few days later'

I CAN'T actually remember the last time I dined at Gars but safe to say it was way before the lockdown, writes Nick Mosley. Back in the day then owners – the Cheung family – firmly established Gars as the go-to for business lunches and dinners – it was undoubtedly a place to see and be seen. It's since changed hands but the interiors remain the same with a smart, light and bright first floor dining room and more informal banquette seating on the ground floor. It was to the latter I headed with my friend Andrew to check out their lunch menu that is served daily until 5pm. I'm always keeping my beady eye out for good value dining as I'm a firm believer that you don't need to pay a fortune to enjoy a quality experience in Brighton but to be frank you're more likely to get that nowadays on a midweek lunchtime or pre-theatre menu. Hence why Gars piqued my interest. Once settled – and with a glass of house wine in hand – the ordering (and stream of Brighton gossip) began. I started with a generous portion of salt and chilli squid. Firm fleshed and in a wonderfully crisp (gluten-free) batter, once I'd polished off the squid I continued to nibble on the copious slithers of garlic and fiery red chilli. Delicious. Meanwhile Andrew was particularly enamoured by the Chinese restaurant classic: sesame prawn toast. These were veritable doorstep-sized slabs of generous prawn meat and didn't stay on the plate for long. My guest then dived into the dim sum – ordering steaming bamboo bowls of handmade pork and shrimp dumplings and what we concurred was possibly the tastiest pak choi greens ever. Drenched in oyster sauce and wok fried ginger and garlic, the vegetables were so fresh it was if they'd literally come out of the ground that morning. I'm a sucker for pork – especially when there is the promise of crispy skin – so I was drawn to the crispy pork belly rice bowl and I'm glad I was as the meat was cooked to perfection and served – joy – with more of the baby pak choi drizzled in soy sauce. It never fails to amaze me how much food is consumed in Chinese restaurants; in my experience it definitely seems to be a 'more is more' mantra although goodness knows where diners put it. Despite my protestations to our host Sasha, we had a stream of additional dishes to sample including hearty wonton soup that Andrew was particularly impressed with for its authentic slightly sweet chicken broth. Gars lunchtime menu is probably one of the most extensive I've seen with steamed dumpling plates at £6 each – you'd probably want to order two or three plates for lunch – through to more hearty rice bowls and pots in the £13-£15 bracket. There are plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options to choose from. The main menu is also available throughout the day however there is more than enough choice to be had without consulting that. I'd say you can have a decent un-rushed lunch – and fantastically friendly service – for the £15-£25 mark. With so much choice in Brighton, its almost unheard of that I end up returning to the same restaurant in the same week. But that is exactly what I did four days following my visit because I literally couldn't get the crispy salt and chilli squid out of my mind. High praise indeed from this reviewer. Having first opened its doors in 1983, I think it's fair to say that Gars solidly remains a Brighton dining institution and has weathered the changing food trends remarkably well. Gars has most definitely still 'got it'. Gars, 19 Prince Albert Street, Brighton BN1 1HF 01273 321 321 •

Mushroom poisoning accused cries as daughter gives evidence

Erin Patterson, the Australian woman accused of poisoning her husband's parents and aunt by serving a lunch laced with deadly mushrooms, broke down in tears as her nine-year-old daughter described events surrounding the meal that is suspected of killing three guests. Clutching a tissue, Patterson watched a video of her daughter, sitting on a green armchair with some coloured pencils, being interviewed by a police officer. Her daughter said she did not know why she was being interviewed, before saying she thought it must be about the lunch at her mother's house. 'What did your mum make for lunch?' a police officer asked. 'Um, I don't know exactly what they had,' she replied, explaining that she and her older brother ate some of the leftovers
