Barry marina plans in doubt after backer pulls out
Plans to build a marina as part of a multi-million pound overhaul of Barry waterfront are in doubt after a major backer announced it would no longer be financing British Ports (ABP) said it could no longer provide the "significant investment" required to build a marina on the waterfront in Barry, Vale of marina formed part of redevelopment plans which also include a new watersports centre, park, housing and of Glamorgan Council said it was "extremely disappointed" by the decision but that it remained confident the rest of the project could go ahead. The project to develop the waterfront, known as Barry Making Waves, formed the basis of an application for £20m of levelling-up funding under the previous Conservative UK a spending review, in October 2024 Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed Barry would receive its funding.A spokesperson for ABP said following its own review, it had come to the "regretful conclusion" that it can no longer "proceed with the significant investment required in a marina"."We are looking at the right, viable ways we can contribute to the project and council's goals," they said, adding the company wanted to contribute to "more growth and prosperity for Barry".Council leader Lis Burnett described the decision as a "clear setback" but said she was confident the project would still go ahead."We believe the project can be delivered without the marina component, subject to UK government agreement," the Local Democracy Reporting Service RT Davies, Conservative Member of the Senedd (MS) for South Wales Central, described the decision as "extremely concerning"."The marina is a key part of plans to level up Barry and losing this investment is a huge blow," he said, adding that action was required to attract new Hooper, a Plaid Cymru councillor for the Barry waterfront area, said he was "surprised" by the announcement, and that the market testing "should have been completed long ago"."We in Barry need answers. Why was so much time and energy sunk into these plans if business partners hadn't already carried out their due diligence?"

Guernsey politicians request £10m QE2 marina gate replacement
Replacing the gates of Guernsey's Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Marina could cost about £10m according to the president of the States Trading Supervisory Board (STSB). STSB has approached Policy and Resources (P&R) to discuss how the project could be funded. Deputy Peter Roffey said the best way to fund the project would be through a loan from the States as this was a "a key bit of infrastructure" that was coming to the end of its life.P&R said it had only recently been made aware of the STSB proposal and had expressed its concerns to the board. Roffey admitted it was an expensive project for the States. Non-States member of the STSB and Chair of the Guernsey Ports board Simon Thornton led the delegation to P&R to request the funds. Some of the marina users said they hoped the new gate would be 2m, rather than the current 1m gate. Head of infrastructure delivery at Guernsey Ports, Jenny Giles said: "The QEII gates and surrounding infrastructure are coming to the end of their useful life."Due to their age, the constant use and the exposure to weather and tide conditions all year round, the gates and the surrounding infrastructure are showing considerable signs of wear with repairs being required more frequently."The gates are constantly monitored by Guernsey Ports' team and more recent surveys have established that it would be more cost effective to replace the gates rather than continue with the substantial repairs which are likely to increase year on year." The QE2 marina was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1989, although it first opened in 1987 and the gates have operated 26,280 would be the first time the main gates have been replaced since the facility was year, two new pontoons were installed at the QE2 Marina at a cost of £1.4m. Politicians also clashed with boat owners in 2024 after they increased the cost of moorings in St Peter Port alongside promises these increases would lead to further investments in Guernsey's of Guernsey's general election at one of BBC Guernsey's roadshows, chair of the Guernsey Development Agency Peter Watson criticised the lack of spending on infrastructure. Mr Watson said: "I really want to see some strategic working, I think they need to be brave, Guernsey has some big issues which need resolving. "We need infrastructure, we haven't spent on it in years."We really just have to build some infrastructure and move Guernsey forward."BBC Guernsey's next election roadshow is on 28 May at Vistas café.

Video shows crews battling boat on fire on Lake Havasu
A boat erupted in flames on Lake Havasu on Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend, threatening to spread through the busy marina. Luckily, as they prepared for an uptick in emergency calls over the holiday weekend, San Bernardino County crews were able to get a quick handle on it. As the wind pushed the blaze toward other vessels docked at Riviera Marina, the crew aboard County Fire Boat 18's first response was to get the fire away from any other possible fuels. 'Boat 18's crew first towed the fully-engulfed vessel to a safer area, then deployed deck-based hose lines to bring the fire under control in minutes,' said the department's X post. Aerial footage attached to the X post shows how the team isolated the fire, keeping it away from neighboring boats, while crews worked to extinguish the flames from their own boat. 'The operator of the affected boat safely evacuated to the dock without injury; however, the vessel was a total loss,' said the department. 'Initial reports suggested a fuel issue caused the fire.' The call for this incident was 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Revitalise Hung Hom with an eye for its transport history
Feel strongly about these letters, or any other aspects of the news? Share your views by emailing us your Letter to the Editor at letters@ or filling in this Google form . Submissions should not exceed 400 words, and must include your full name and address, plus a phone number for verification More than a key transport hub on the Kowloon Peninsula, Hung Hom has been the pulse of Hong Kong's evolving mobility. Transforming the Hung Hom waterfront ('Proposed Hung Hom marina is as exciting as it is challenging', May 19 ) would present a unique opportunity to celebrate the area's role in the history of Hong Kong transport and logistics, a legacy that should connect us to our past and shape our future. For decades, Hung Hom served as the southern terminus of the Kowloon-Canton Railway, connecting Hong Kong to the mainland and facilitating both passenger and freight transport. The station's iconic interior, illuminated by distinctive spherical pendant lights, witnessed countless cross-border journeys. The ferry pier once stood near the railway terminus. Nearby, Hong Kong's first Cross-Harbour Tunnel transformed vehicle travel across Victoria Harbour. Today, Hung Hom remains a vital interchange station on the Tuen Ma and East Rail lines, linking new development areas with the central business district.
