Is It Time To Hire A Financial Planner? Here's How To Know
Let's talk about something that can feel a little awkward: asking for help with your finances—especially when it comes to planning for retirement. For a lot of people, hiring a financial planner feels like admitting defeat. 'Shouldn't I be able to figure this out on my own?' Maybe. But the truth is, just like you'd hire a contractor to renovate your kitchen or a mechanic to fix your car, there comes a point when bringing in a pro is not just smart—it's necessary. Here are a few signs it might be time to bring a financial advisor or investment manager into your corner. Maybe retirement is five years away. Maybe it's right around the corner. Either way, when it starts to feel like more than just a far-off dream, it's time to get serious about your plan. A financial advisor can help you turn vague goals into a clear strategy—and help make sure you don't overlook something important. One of the most common questions I hear is: 'Am I on track?' And honestly, it's a great question. But the answer isn't always simple. A financial planner can look at your full picture—income, expenses, investments, insurance, taxes—and help you figure out whether your current path gets you where you want to go. If you've got 401(k)s from different jobs, IRAs, brokerage accounts, or even rental properties, it might be time to call in a professional. An advisor can help consolidate, organize, and align your investments with your retirement goals—and potentially uncover efficiencies that save you money along the way. Whether you're a DIY investor or someone who's always been a bit hands-off, retirement planning requires a shift in strategy. It's not just about growing wealth anymore—it's about protecting it and making it last. A financial planner or investment manager can help build a portfolio designed for income, not just accumulation. Retirement isn't just about the money you've saved—it's about how you use it. That includes thinking through tax-efficient withdrawal strategies, Medicare and long-term care planning, and how you want to pass along assets to your loved ones. These aren't decisions to make on the fly. This one might be the most important. If you're losing sleep wondering if you've missed something, or second-guessing every financial move, that's your gut telling you it's time for support. A trusted advisor offers more than financial guidance—they offer confidence and clarity. You don't have to go it alone. In fact, the best time to hire a financial advisor is before you feel overwhelmed. It's about being proactive, not reactive. Whether retirement is a decade away or right around the corner, having someone in your corner can make all the difference. As always, stay healthy, happy, and on track toward a retirement that's truly yours.

Community steps up to help after garage fire in Bible Hill, N.S.
Wayne Morris is known by many people of Bible Hill, N.S., as the sweet mechanic who is never afraid to lend a helping hand, but after his garage caught fire, the community was quick to return the favour. On May 13, Morris' hobby garage on Farnham Road caught fire which not only destroyed the 50 years' worth of items in the garage but also sent he and his wife to hospital. 'I walked out the garage, a big bang, I turned around and all I could see is flames coming up,' said Morris in an interview with CTV News. Morris says he tried to grab something from the garage when the fire broke out, but he inhaled a lot of smoke. 'I ended up in the hospital right away, and my wife, she did not know where I was for a few minutes because she was in shock. They got the fire out, but the damage is what you can see,' he said. Garage Fire A fire in Bible Hill, N.S., destroyed a garage and all of its contents on May 13, 2025. (Mike Lamb/CTV Atlantic) Morris' garage, a place he had helped so many people at, had been turned into little more than a pile of ash. That's when a neighbour of had an idea. Amber Davidson first met Morris shortly after moving to the community. Her car had broken down, but she didn't have the money to fix it. As she walked down Farnham Road one night, she met Morris who was quick to tell her to bring her vehicle to his garage. Charging no more than the cost of the parts, Morris fixed her vehicle. 'The day of the fire someone confirmed, 'Yeah, that was Wayne's garage over there,' and it didn't sit well with me, especially after the kindness he showed me, so I said, 'You know what, I'm going to help him out',' she said. Garage Fire Amber Davidson, left, and Wayne Morris stand amongst the rubble of a garage fire in Bible Hill, N.S. (Mike Lamb/CTV Atlantic) Davidson started a GoFundMe in an effort to raise funds for Morris, and shortly after it went live, she started to receive stories of people who had similar run-ins with Morris. 'People just came out of the woodwork with stories similar to my own about how they were in a jam and Wayne helped them out. He never turned anyone away,' said Davidson. Morris says he's shocked by the amount of people who are donating to help. 'I don't know what to say. It's just beautiful people coming and trying to help me to get things fixed up and all that,' he said 'I'm very, very thankful for what they're doing.' Morris says he hopes to use the funds raised to build a new, smaller garage which would be more manageable for the years ahead. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page

I've changed my mind, next time I'll get a car on finance
Two years ago I acquired my Nissan Qashqai. I love this car dearly. It has cameras to help me to park in tight spaces, is big enough to fit my children's bikes, scooters and ginormous teddies, and is also new enough to not fall apart. Or so I thought. In the 730 days I've had this car I have had to: change all four tyres; replace the battery; fix all the wipers; and have the engine stripped and repaired. I've gone from being someone who knew nothing about cars to someone who knows an awful lot about valve failures and cylinder compression issues. I'm also best mates with my mechanic. What a dud. I never needed anything fancy, but is it too much to ask

Deer me! Wild moment suburban Melbourne business is terrorised by a rampaging animal that burst head-first through a glass door
Astonishing footage has emerged of a surprise intruder barging into a mechanic workshop to cause chaos. A deer smashed through the glass doors of Beaconsfield Autotech, in Melbourne 's east on Monday afternoon. CCTV captured the wild animal frantically racing through the carpark and falling over itself before entering the workshop. A bewildered mechanic working on a car barely had time to realise what was going on before the deer darted into the nearby storefront. Desperate for a way out, the deer ran head-first into a glass door and repeatedly headbutted it until finally smashed its way through and fled the scene. The owners were unfazed by the damage bill and trail of destruction left behind. 'Not your average day,'' the business captioned the footage which has since attracted almost 100,000 online viewers. Many viewers also saw the funny side and shared their best deer puns. 'Oh deer, what can the matter be!' one wrote. Another quipped: 'Beaconsfield Autotech, where deer mechanics bills are out the door!' Others were more concerned for the distressed animal's welfare. 'The poor deer looks petrified. I hope no more damage or harm happened to anyone else or their property,' one wrote. 'Poor baby! Hope it's not badly injured,' another wrote. The business assured viewers that the deer was uninjured and last seen heading towards a creek at a nearby reserve. Deer were introduced to Australia from Europe and Asia as a game animal in the 1800s. Wild deer can be found in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. It's understood the most abundant species of deer in Victoria are Sambar, Fallow and Red Deer. putting the feral population at over a million.
