Spotify is trying out a new way to help you find fresh music
Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Spotify is testing sub-genre and 'More Discovery' chips within genre-based playlists. Selecting a chip revamps the entire playlist with fresh tracks, rather than filtering existing ones. For now, this feature appears limited to some users only, suggesting a controlled experiment or limited rollout. Many of us have a love-hate relationship with Spotify. On the one hand, I absolutely love the Spotify Jam feature for social listening, and I use it practically every week to schedule music sessions with my partner and friends. On the other hand, Spotify's discovery mechanisms have felt off to me over the years, regurgitating the same few popular songs. The company is clearly listening to the discovery issue, as users are now seeing sub-genre chips to help them discover new music. Reddit user kwabb spotted genre-related chips in their Spotify-generated R&B Mix playlist. Such playlists are already tailored around a user's preference but may not align well with the user's active mood and preference, which can be a mismatch. Seemingly to counter this, the company has introduced chips such as 'More Discovery' and sub-genre chips like 'Alternative R&B,' 'Neo Soul,' and 'Pop R&B.' Presumably and logically, the sub-genre chips would be different according to the playlist. The user says that selecting any of these chips updates the whole playlist with new content rather than merely filtering out the existing list. These chips have so far appeared only in Spotify's genre mix playlists, but the user's experience has been positive, as it has surfaced new music instead of cycling through the 'same old' recommendations. I haven't yet received these chips on my devices, so it's possibly a controlled test or rollout. We've contacted Spotify to learn more about these sub-genre chips in genre playlists. We'll keep you updated when we do. In the interim, if you'd like to improve Spotify's music discovery, you can try to completely disable the Smart Shuffle option from the app. Got a tip? Talk to us! TikTok users can now save songs directly to SoundCloud
TikTok users will now be able to save tracks they discover straight to their SoundCloud app. On Wednesday, the two companies announced they're partnering to expand an existing TikTok feature that was previously available to users of music streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. The 'add to music app' button appears when a TikTok user clicks on an audio track added to a video. Saved songs are automatically added to a TikTok playlist on users' default music streaming service. The integration streamlines a process many TikTok users do organically: find new music on the video app. The 'add to music app' feature is an easy way for listeners to take their discoveries off the app (and for artists, especially indie musicians, to grow their fanbase beyond just passive TikTok listeners). Over the past five or so years, TikTok has proved to be a powerful driver of pop music — not just for emerging artists but also for household names. Artists plan and unveil TikTok-specific marketing to hype up their new music and older songs get a second wind as a new audience on social media discovers their work. Even Taylor Swift recognizes she needs her music on the platform: last year, as TikTok's licensing deal with Universal Music Group expired and spiraled into a nasty back and forth, UMG artists' music was pulled from the video platform. Swift's music reappeared before a deal was publicly announced (and just in time to promote her upcoming album). There was even a Billboard TikTok chart ranking the app's hits, though it was short-lived; the chart was discontinued earlier this year. TikTok says that since rolling out the 'add to music app' feature last year, songs have been saved more than a billion times. The SoundCloud integration begins rolling out today to all users.

Amazon Music Rolls Out AI-Powered Search Feature to Select Users
Amazon Music has announced a new AI-powered search experience which launches on Tuesday in beta to select users. The new experimental feature is meant to enhance music discovery, according to an Amazon press release. A subset of US Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers in the beta will be able to search for an artist in the Amazon Music app on iOS and tap "Explore." From there, they'll encounter "curated music collections" and a quick way to create AI-generated playlists. "By leveraging AI to enhance search and discovery features, we're making it easier for fans to dive deeper into the worlds of their favorite artists and find new ones they'll love," Ryan Redington, general manager of Amazon Music, said in a statement. The press release includes examples of what users might see when they search for artists like Jelly Roll, Bad Bunny and BLACKPINK. The "Explore" tab for the K-pop group, for instance, presents tracks grouped into categories like "global collaborations" and "pre-2020 classics." Amazon Music will expand the list of artists included in the experience over time. If you're in the beta, you can try out the new feature by updating the Amazon Music app to the latest version, tapping the "Find" button, searching for an artist and tapping "Explore." An Amazon Music Unlimited subscription starts at $12 per month for an Individual plan. It includes unlimited song skips, the ability to listen to one audiobook each month and other perks. Amazon Music Unlimited differs from the version of Amazon Music you get with an Amazon Prime membership. For example, there are skip limits with Amazon Music Prime. Here's a chart from Amazon that breaks down exactly what you get with both versions.
