Los Angeles DA Hochman to announce charges against man who drove into crowd outside East Hollywood nightclub

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman is set to announce charges against the man who police say drove into a crowd outside of a popular nightclub in East Hollywood over the weekend. Tuesday's news conference was slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. Fernando Ramirez, 29, was taken into custody after the incident outside of Vermont Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard early Saturday morning. According to authorities, Ramirez made a U-turn and plowed into the large group of people around 2 a.m. The Los Angeles Police Department said it was investigating it as an intentional act. As many as 36 people were injured and seven were in critical condition in the immediate aftermath, the Los Angeles City Fire Department said. All injured people survived with injuries ranging from minor pain to serious fractures and lacerations, the LAPD said. After driving into the crowd, bystanders pulled Ramirez from the vehicle and physically attacked him. A gunman shot Ramirez in his lower back during the chaos, leaving him with injuries that required surgery. Ramirez survived the shooting. The LAPD said on Sunday evening that it was searching for the shooter, who was described as a Latino man between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-7 and 150-170 pounds. It's not yet clear if Hochman will speak about the shooter during Tuesday's news conference.

Authorities investigating LA shooting and crash that injured dozens ask for tips to find gunman

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Police investigating a crash outside a Los Angeles nightclub that injured at least 36 people asked for help Monday to find the man they suspect of shooting the driver. A vehicle rammed into a crowd of people outside the Vermont Hollywood venue early Saturday along a busy boulevard in East Hollywood, leading bystanders to attack the driver, authorities said. The driver was later found to have been shot in the lower back, according to police. Los Angeles police released surveillance photos Monday from cameras near the crash showing a man with a goatee wearing a blue Dodgers jacket and a light blue jersey with the number 5. Officials are asking for help in identifying him. The driver was identified Sunday as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez. He is expected to face a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. A phone number for Ramirez could not be found in an online database search, and the public defender's office has not responded to requests for comment on whether one of its attorneys is representing him. The Vermont Hollywood nightclub was hosting a reggae hip-hop event Friday night, according to its calendar. People were leaving at the end of the event when the car crashed into them, the venue said online. 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred early Saturday morning outside our venue,' the Vermont Hollywood club said. 'We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure the person responsible for this horrific act is held fully accountable.' Ramirez's car came to a stop after colliding with several food carts, which became lodged underneath the vehicle, police said. Injuries ranged from minor pain to serious fractures and lacerations, and some people were briefly trapped beneath the vehicle, police said. Ramirez has a criminal history that includes an aggravated battery conviction for a 2019 attack on a Black man who worked at a Whole Foods grocery store in Laguna Beach, California. He was also convicted of a civil rights misdemeanor and race-based hate crime after expressing to police that he hated Black people. That was later overturned in 2021 after a California appeals court found he made that statement after invoking his Fifth Amendment rights. 'Ramirez has proved to be violent to strangers and family alike and clearly has a lack of concern for the safety of others,' Orange County prosecutors said in a court filing at the time. He also pleaded guilty in 2014 to battery and a gang-related charge and in 2021 to domestic violence, records show. A 2024 drunken driving case and 2022 domestic violence charge were pending at the time of the nightclub crash, according to records. ___ Associated Press reporter Ed White contributed from Detroit.

Vehicle driven into Los Angeles crowd injures 30 people

A man drove a car into a busy crowd of people waiting to get into a nightclub in Los Angeles early on Saturday, injuring 30 people, with at least five in critical condition. The driver, who is now in custody, has been identified as Fernando Ramirez, 29, and faces potential charges including attempted murder, police said. The incident took place outside The Vermont Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard, the city's fire department said. A line of people, mostly women, were waiting to get into the nightclub when the car – a Nissan Versa – struck them, also hitting a taco truck and a nearby valet stand. According to Cpt Adam VanGerpen, the public information officer for the LA fire department, people were quickly transported to local hospitals and trauma centers. Parademics also determined that one of the patients had a gunshot wound, VanGerpen said. Witnesses said Ramirez was immediately grabbed and pulled him out of the car. He was also shot during the struggle, the LA police department said. He then fled the scene on foot. Images from the scene from photographers and social media show debris, including shoes, strewn across the road, as surrounding areas were sealed off and emergency response teams arrived. 'This is under police investigation,' VanGerpen added. 'This will be a large investigation with the LAPD.' Partygoers in the club came out immediately to help the victims before the emergency crews arrived, he said. 'They were all standing in line going into a nightclub. There was a taco cart out there, so they were … getting some food, waiting to go in. And there's also a valet line there,' VanGerpen said. 'The valet podium was taken out, the taco truck was taken out, and then a large number of people were impacted by the vehicle.' The LAPD confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
