More off-leash dog areas to open in Vancouver

Vancouver park board has opened a fenced-in, off-leash dog area in Heather Park, is expected to open another later this summer at Granville Park, and is expanding the off-leash area at Emery Barnes Park. Park board Chair Laura Christensen said all three projects were approved by board in June 2023. The Heather Park off-leash area at West 18th and Heather is around the same size as an ice hockey rink. 'The 1,200-square-metre OLA offers a large open space for dogs to explore, as well as a series of agility features, including a ramp, stepping-stones and hurdles,' Christensen said. 'Additional seating will offer a place for owners to relax while their pups let off steam, and two- and four-legged visitors will also have access to a new drinking fountain and dog bowl. 'The opening of our new off leash area marks another exciting milestone in our commitment to growing dog-friendly spaces across Vancouver.' Later this summer, work is expected to be completed on a new off-leash area at Granville Park in Fairview and on an upgraded area at Downtown's Emery Barnes Park. Construction is also underway on a new off-leash area at Oakridge Centre. The park board adopted the People, Parks, and Dogs Strategy in 2017. dcarrigg@

Residents planning to fight ban on off-lead dogs at park

Auckland Region 7 May 2025 A decision to ban off lead dogs from a popular Auckland park has some residents gearing up for a fight. Auckland Council's currently reviewing dog rules at dozens of local and regional parks and beaches. The popular suburban Monte Cecilia park is one of them, at the moment pooches can roam free in designated areas. Almost 90 percent of submissions on its future wanted to keep the off leash areas, just 10 percent supported a change. Ella Kumar, Puketāpapa Local Board chair said they want their community to feel safe when enjoying their parks and reserves in Puketāpapa. "Our decision to change some locations from off-leash to on-leash will ensure these spaces are more accessible for all park users," she said. Dog Lovers of Monte Cecilia spokesperson Jonathan Sweeney spoke to Lisa Owen.
