A roadside bomb targeting police vehicle in northwest Pakistan kills 2 officers and wounds 14

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A powerful roadside bomb struck a police vehicle in a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban in the restive northwest of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing at least two officers and wounding 14 others, mostly passersby, officials said. The attack took place in the city of Wana in South Waziristan, a district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to local police chief Adam Khan. Militant violence has surged in recent weeks, claiming the lives of dozens of security personnel. Pakistan is also preparing for a military operation in Bajur, another northwestern district, where elders are in talks with the government and insurgents to avoid violence. Previous such operations years ago displaced thousands of residents. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on police, but suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, or Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, known as TTP. The group frequently targets security forces and civilians across the region. TTP is a close ally of the Afghan Taliban, who returned to power in neighboring Afghanistan in August 2021 following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces after two decades of war. Since then, many TTP fighters and leaders have found refuge in Afghanistan, with some living openly under Taliban rule — a development that has emboldened the group in Pakistan. The Associated Press

Policeman injured, attacker killed in southern Russia assault, governor says

(Reuters) -A policeman was attacked in Russia's Kabardino-Balkaria region in the North Caucasus on Friday, leaving one person dead and another injured, regional governor Kazbek Kokov said. According to Kokov, the attacker wounded the policeman with an unspecified bladed weapon before being shot dead. Kokov provided no further details about the incident. The Russian state-run RIA news agency reported that there were two attackers and the second one was at large. Russia's North Caucasus regions have suffered several deadly attacks in recent years. In March, counter-terrorism forces killed four militants affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) who authorities said were plotting to attack a regional branch of the interior ministry.

Sheriff's deputy assaulted on live TV

The Knox County deputy was left in a critical condition after the violent crime, which took place while he was responding to a shooting in a nearby neighborhood. The officers were tracking 44-year-old suspect Christopher Hensley on Saturday as they took part in the broadcast, which follows officers on duty as they carry out their work. Hensley drew the officers into a dark wooded area behind a residential block. Deputy Swanger walked blindly into the darkness with his own weapon drawn, but moments later video cut to Swanger limp and laying on his side. It's understood the suspect allegedly struck the officer in the face with either a brick or a rock. Co-host of the show, Tom Rizzo, said 'the entire studio went silent as we watched what happened next.' 'His mates dragging him to safety to render aid… as Dalton tried to regain his feet, says, 'I'm going to be heavy'. In the distressing footage, two of Swanger's colleagues hold his arms as he is dragged, semi conscious and on his back, out of harms way. They tried to help him to his feet as blood pooled at his head. 'This was yet another example of an attack on the uniform…no care/concern otherwise for the person wearing it,' Rizzo said. 'The fellow officers have to then regain composure after their brother officer is taken to a trauma center…press reset…do the job.' Swanger sustained critical head injuries and still remains in the trauma intensive care unit, his police department said in a statement on Tuesday. His condition is critical but stable, and visits have been restricted to encourage rest. 'Deputy Swanger continues to improve, making minor yet significant improvements. This healing journey will take time, patience, and continued fervent prayer,' they said. A GoFundMe has been set up to help his family with a note that he is now unable to work 'his second job' to provide for his family. The suspect was ultimately arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder, aggravated assault on a first responder, possession of a firearm with intent to go armed and manufacturing, delivering, selling, possession of a controlled substance.

PM Sharif seeks action after two police officers shot dead in northwest Pakistan

PESHAWAR: Two police officers were shot and killed when unidentified assailants opened fire on their mobile patrol van in Swabi, a district in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directing authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. The attack took place around 10:00 p.m. Friday night near a roadside kiosk within the jurisdiction of the Gadoon police station, according to Abdul Majid, a senior police officer in Swabi. The officers had briefly stopped to get water when they were ambushed by gunmen on a motorbike. 'Terrorists riding a motorbike opened fire on the police party,' Majid told Arab News over the phone. 'Two officers were martyred on the spot.' Militant attacks in KP, particularly by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), have increased in recent years, with security forces, government officials and civilians often targeted. The Pakistani military and law enforcement agencies have launched intelligence-based operations to curb the violence, but attacks have persisted. Following the shooting, a large police contingent was deployed to the area to secure the scene, collect forensic evidence and launch a search operation. No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the Swabi attack and expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of the police officers. 'We pay tribute to the martyrs and pray for patience for their families,' he said in a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office. Sharif directed authorities to investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are brought to justice. 'The war against terrorism will continue until this scourge is eradicated from the country,' he said, praising the efforts of police officers fighting on the front lines.
