MACC chief apologises to Teoh Beng Hock's family 16 years after death, offers financial support for child
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki today offered an apology to the family of Teoh Beng Hock, the political aide who was found dead in 2009 at the anti-graft body's Selangor office building. On the 16th anniversary of Teoh's death, Azam said the MACC acknowledges findings from various investigations over the past 16 years on Teoh's death, including the police's latest probe which had been given the 'No Further Action' classification by the Attorney General's Chambers. 'Although the latest investigation did not uncover sufficient evidence to charge any individual under the law, the MACC views with utmost seriousness the fact that the late Teoh Beng Hock was found deceased on MACC Selangor premises on 16 July 2009. 'This tragic incident has had a profound impact not only on the deceased's family but also on all MACC personnel and the nation as a whole,' he said in a statement today. 'In light of this, I, as the Chief Commissioner of the MACC, wish to express my deepest sympathies and extend an apology to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock for the pain and suffering they have endured over the years,' he added. Azam noted that the Malaysian government had previously on May 12, 2015 paid RM600,000 as compensation to Teoh's family, as well as RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement. 'Nevertheless, as a gesture of compassion, MACC is prepared to provide a goodwill contribution to the late Teoh's family for the purpose of supporting the welfare and educational needs of his child,' he said. Azam did not disclose the amount of the proposed goodwill contribution. In the same statement, Azam listed reforms that the MACC has taken since Teoh's death to safeguard the welfare of individuals assisting in MACC's investigations. He said the improvements include the establishment of Video Interviewing Rooms (VIR) to record statements from witnesses, detainees, and suspects; as well as relocating the Witness Interview Room to the ground floor to allow easier access and enhanced transparency during monitoring. The MACC, he added, has upgraded its CCTV systems with advanced technology, increased the number of cameras, and positioned them strategically to monitor and record the movements and behaviour of all individuals entering its premises. Iron grills have also been installed at MACC buildings in line with the authorities' guidelines, while investigating officers now use Body Worn Cameras (BWC) during investigations to record all operations and ensure officer integrity. He further noted that the MACC has adopted the UK interview model known as PEACE (Planning, Engage, Account, Closure, Evaluation), which emphasises both effectiveness and safety, and that this has been adapted locally as the MACC PEACE model. 'MACC remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold integrity and transparency in all aspects of its duties and to continuously strengthen institutional reforms,' he concluded. Recommended reading:

Let law run its course, says Ean Yong after Teoh's sister calls him out
Ean Yong Hian Wah said he shares the family's pain but will not respond to Facebook posts calling him out over his silence. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Former Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah has called for the legal process to take its course in the Teoh Beng Hock case, after being criticised by his late political aide's sister. Ean Yong said he shared the Teoh family's grief over the past 16 years and pledged to cooperate fully with police if any new evidence emerges. 'Through all the sadness, I urge that the law be allowed to run its course,' Oriental Daily quoted him as saying. 'I will not comment on the Facebook postings made by Teoh Lee Lan.' Lee Lan had taken to Facebook to express frustration that Ean Yong had yet to break his silence or take a clear stance, more than three weeks after the Attorney-General's Chambers classified the case as requiring no further action (NFA). She accused Ean Yong of avoiding responsibility, questioning why he did not ensure her brother had legal representation during his Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) interrogation or inform the family earlier about his detention. Teoh, a political aide to Ean Yong, died on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours at the Selangor MACC headquarters. An inquest into his death was held, and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal ruled in 2014 that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.

AGC says insufficient evidence to charge anyone in latest probe into Teoh Beng Hock's death
KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has sought to explain its decision to classify the investigation into the 2009 death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock as requiring no further action (NFA). In a statement, the AGC said it had thoroughly reviewed and examined the investigation papers submitted but found insufficient evidence to support charges against any individuals. 'Upon thorough evaluation of all the evidence, it was found that there is insufficient evidence to prove any offence against any individual under the law. 'Therefore, the instruction given is for no further action to be taken in relation to this investigation paper,' the AGC said. The announcement has drawn criticism from Teoh's family and their lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, who urged the AGC to clarify its decision. Teoh Beng Hock who was a political aide to a Selangor state executive councillor, was found dead on July 16, 2009, after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam following an overnight interrogation by MACC officers. — Picture by Sayuti Zainudin Ramkarpal had earlier questioned whether the AGC's conclusion meant there was no evidence of wrongdoing, despite a 2014 Court of Appeal ruling implicating Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers as potential suspects. Teoh, who was a political aide to a Selangor state executive councillor, was found dead on July 16, 2009, after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam following an overnight interrogation by MACC officers. An inquest into his death returned an open verdict, but the 2014 Court of Appeal decision stated that Teoh's death was caused by the actions of 'one or more unknown persons,' including MACC officials. Teoh's sister, Teoh Lee Lan, voiced her family's disappointment with the outcome of the latest investigation. After Pakatan Harapan's 2018 electoral victory, the Cabinet agreed to reopen the case, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim promised to conclude investigations within two years. Two prior investigations in 2011 and 2015 were also classified as NFA. In 2023, the High Court ordered the police to complete the delayed investigation. However, with the case now marked as NFA again, Teoh's family maintains their quest for answers remains unresolved.
