Dancers and a Dam: World Bank Hones New Strategy in Mozambique

World Bank chief Ajay Banga's visit to Mozambique this month at the invitation of President Daniel Chapo to discuss a $6.4 billion hydropower project the lender is helping fund had all the hallmarks of a political rally. Dancing women and gyrating men wearing traditional masks were among the hundreds of people who gathered to meet the dignitaries in the central town of Tete, many of them clad in the red garb of the ruling Frelimo party. The six-foot-eight Chapo towered above the crowd as he walked down a red carpet, shaking hands, pumping his fist and shouting chants, with Banga following close behind him. The scene was repeated in Songo, a short helicopter ride away.

PM shrugs off #TurunAnwar rally, says RM100 aid matters to those who need it

PUTRAJAYA, July 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has brushed off the upcoming 'Turun Anwar' rally scheduled for this Saturday, saying calls for him to resign will not have any political effect as the next general election is still over two years away. 'This isn't about political questions, because the next election is more than two years away. So calling for Anwar to step down won't have any effect, don't worry,' he said in his speech during the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly here. He was referring to the #TurunAnwar rally the opposition bloc Perikatan Nasional is organising this weekend. Anwar also pushed back against critics who dismissed the RM100 one-off aid he announced yesterday, stressing that the assistance is meant for those in need. 'Yesterday, I announced several additional measures. In the political world, if some people feel offended, so be it. Some said, 'Only RM100?' 'Well, if you're earning RM20,000 or RM40,000 a month, RM100 might not mean much. But I know that when you go into the villages, it does mean something. This is an addition. When I hear some opposition MPs say, 'Only RM100,' I wonder, did they not read properly? And when I said they were short-sighted, they got upset. 'This is an increase from RM13 billion to RM15 billion. It's on top of what has already been implemented. The same applies to fuel prices,' he added. He cited the example of a low-income household of four, saying the aid could amount to an additional RM400 for the family. 'That's on top of the STR and i-Sara support currently in place. Don't belittle that,' he said. Yesterday, Anwar announced a one-off cash aid of RM100 for all Malaysians aged 18 and above, as well as the lowering of the RON95 petrol price from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre once the fuel subsidy rationalisation is implemented later this year.

KET revives Fancy Farm coverage, thanks to donation

Kentucky Educational Television has revived its plans to cover the annual Fancy Farm political rally on Aug. 2 in Western Kentucky. Shae Hopkins, executive director and CEO of KET, said in a press release a donation from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce will make the coverage possible. 'We're grateful to the Kentucky Chamber, a longtime corporate partner and supporter of KET, for helping us to continue this decades-long tradition of bringing viewers across the state coverage of this iconic event,' Hopkins said. The release did not disclose the specific donation amount. Earlier this summer, Fancy Farm organizers announced Kentucky Chamber President and CEO Ashli Watts would emcee the event. KET previously said it planned to eliminate its coverage of Fancy Farm because of federal funding cuts. A rescission bill that stripped $9 billion in federal funding for public broadcasting, global health initiatives and foreign aid programs was given final passage July 17. Fancy Farm is a political picnic and rally held each summer in Graves County, where candidates and elected officials take jabs at their opponents before an often rowdy audience. The bipartisan event has become more Republican-heavy in recent years as Democrats have lost significant ground in the state. This year, picnic-goers can expect to hear from all three high-profile Republicans running to replace outgoing U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell: U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, former Attorney General Daniel Cameron and businessman Nate Morris. On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman and state Rep. Pamela Stevenson, who is also running to replace McConnell, have declined to speak. The only confirmed Democratic speaker so far is John "Drew" Williams, who is challenging U.S. Rep. James Comer in Kentucky's 1st Congressional District race. KET will livestream coverage beginning at 2:30/1:30 pm CT Aug. 2 with host Renee Shaw and analysts Bob Babbage and Trey Grayson. The station will air highlights from the event at 8/7 p.m. Aug. 3. Reach reporter Hannah Pinski at hpinski@ or follow her on X, formerly known as Twitter, at @hannahpinski.
