Hong Kong to look at laws globally for best way to handle AI porn case: John Lee

Hong Kong's leader has pledged to examine regulations in other jurisdictions and look for 'best practices' to see what the city should do in the case of a university student accused of using AI to generate pornographic images of classmates and other women. Advertisement Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Tuesday also called on institutions to deal with students' misconduct seriously, saying any illegal acts should be reported to law enforcement agencies as well. Lee was responding to a case at the University of Hong Kong, in which a law student was accused of using AI to generate explicit images of classmates and other women, but only received a warning from the institution when he was found out. Three of the victims made public their accusations against the student referred to as 'X' in social media posts on Saturday as they alleged the university had not done enough to hold the man accountable. The trio said they had no plans to report the incident to police, as they had learned that 'such acts had not been regulated by the local criminal framework'. Weighing in on the case on Tuesday, Lee pointed to current legislation such as the Crimes Ordinance, which covered internet activities and countered threats to publish intimate images without consent and access to a computer with dishonest content. Advertisement But he conceded that AI was an emerging technology that was evolving 'very rapidly', with new capabilities and developments appearing in a very short period of time. 'The government will closely monitor the situation regarding the fast development and application of AI, examine global regulatory trends, and conduct in-depth research into international best practices to see what we should do in regard to the case,' Lee said before his weekly meeting with the government's top decision-making Executive Council.

Hong Kong student AI porn case sparks law review pledge as HKU vows action

Hong Kong authorities have said that existing laws will be reviewed if necessary after a student at the city's oldest university used AI to generate pornographic images of classmates and other women and received only a warning from the institution. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) said on Monday that it was also conducting a review of the incident and vowed to take further action after some victims demanded more be done, calling the warning letter it had issued to the male law student insufficient. The Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau said that the government would continue to closely monitor the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in Hong Kong, draw reference from practices elsewhere, and propose appropriate measures, and 'if necessary, review the existing legislation'. HKU, which earlier said it had also asked the student to apologise to the victims, told the Post that more would be done. 'The university is now further reviewing the case and will take further actions when appropriate to ensure a safe and respectful learning environment,' it said. In a reply to the Post, three of the victims demanded 'more permanent and substantial' consequences for their classmate.

3 University of Hong Kong students demand tougher action after AI porn incident

Three students of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) whose classmate used artificial intelligence (AI) to generate pornographic images of them have demanded 'a more permanent and substantial consequence' for the perpetrator after he was issued a warning letter but not disciplined further. In a reply to the Post on Monday, the victims also expressed unhappiness about 'rearrangements' made by HKU after they lodged a complaint to the institution in March, saying they were either forced to sit close to the student a few times, or were made to stay in the same project and work with him. The trio made public their accusations against the law student referred to as 'X' in social media posts on Saturday, while alleging the university had not done enough to hold the man accountable. On Monday, they said HKU should also be held responsible for not doing better to protect them after their ordeal. 'We demand a more permanent and substantial consequence for X,' the three students told the Post. 'We are not satisfied with HKU's current disciplinary actions, that is, the issuing of a warning letter [only] for internal reference.
