The Best-Sounding Midrange Bluetooth Speaker I've Tested Is 25% Off Right Now
Deal alert: The Sony ULT Field 5 Bluetooth speaker is available for $248 at Amazon. That's equivalent to 25% off or a savings of $82. We named this newcomer the best midrange Bluetooth speaker available, and this discount puts it in a much more appealing price range. If you were to ask me what my favorite new portable Bluetooth speaker of 2025 is so far, I'd have to say Sony's ULT Field 5 speaker. When it launched back in April, I called it one of the best-sounding Bluetooth speakers I've tested in its size class. However, it cost $330, which is pretty pricey, though I suspected we'd see it discounted in due time. That has come true a few times already. The speaker has been marked down a couple of times since launch, first for Memorial Day and again for Amazon Prime Day. Now it's on sale again, albeit at a smaller discount than during those big sale events. Read more: Best Bluetooth speakers of 2025 In fact, a few other Sony Bluetooth speakers are on sale for good prices, including the new ULT Field 3 ($149 or $51 off) and the compact ULT Field 1 ($98 or $32 off). They're all good portable speakers, but the ULT Field 5 has the best sound of the bunch and is arguably the best overall. ULT is short for ultimate or, as Sony says, "The ultimate step into the evolution of its portable audio products." Power represents "dynamic sound pressure and deep bass." Sound translates to "as if you were in the front row at a concert." Enlarge Image The Sony ULT Field 5 (left) compared to the ULT Field 3 (right). Screenshot by David Carnoy/CNET In the past, I thought Sony's Bluetooth speakers were decent enough but not great. However, with the ULT series, Sony's significantly improved the sound quality of its Bluetooth speakers. I also like the new designs of the ULT Field 3 and ULT Field 5, which can stand vertically or lay horizontally. Both speakers are fully waterproof, dust-proof, and rust-proof, with an IP67 certification. Both include a new removable shoulder strap, which I ended up using more with the heftier ULT Field 5 than the lighter ULT Field 3. The ULT Field 5 weights 7.27 pounds while the ULT Field 3 weighs 2.65 pounds -- a big difference. (Read my hands-on first take review of both speakers). Enlarge Image The ULT Field 5 with its removable shoulder strap attached. David Carnoy/CNET The ULT Field 3 delivers more bass and volume than you'd expect, given its relatively compact size (and it offers better clarity and bass performance than its predecessor, the SRS-XE300). But the ULT Field 5's soundstage is noticeably wider and the speaker plays louder with noticeably fuller, richer sound. It also has built-in party lighting with a USB-C charge in-out port so the speaker can be used as a power bank to charge your devices. Battery life is rated at up to 25 hours at moderate volume levels or 10 hours with the party lighting activated. Read more: Best Bluetooth speakers of 2025 Don't expect real stereo separation from either the ULT Field 5 or ULT Field 3. To get true stereo separation, you'll need to link two of them together, creating a stereo pair (Sony has made it easier to link its ULT speakers in both Party Connect mode and stereo mode). Of course, not everybody can afford one of these speakers, let alone two, but it helps that they're now on sale. It's my favorite this year and courtesy of Prime Day, you can find it in the sale price of $21, down from its regular price of $35. Even better is the fact that this deal is for all shoppers, not Prime members only. At this price point, it's going to be sold out in no time. Despite its small size, the speaker packs a real punch with its 5W output and delivers clear and dynamic sound. You'll be surprised at how much volume and bass it can produce, and it is ideal for both indoor and outdoor settings. The audio quality remains crisp whether you're listening to your favorite playlist in the bathroom or providing the soundtrack for a day at the park. I Love This Bluetooth Speaker, and It's 14% Off This July 4th
I've tested a lot of portable Bluetooth speakers, so I'm used to people asking me for recommendations. I like to point them to our list of the best Bluetooth speakers, but I also mention that I awarded a CNET Editors' Choice to the Anker Soundcore Boom 2 because it's well-priced and delivers impressive sound, making it an excellent value. There are plenty of Bluetooth speakers to choose from, but the Soundcore Boom 2 stands out for its compact, waterproof design and great value for the money. Compared with its competitors, this mini boom box speaker is already a good deal at its list price of $140. Right now Amazon has the black model on sale for $120, or 14% off, at Amazon for Prime members. That makes this a well-timed Fourth of July deal and an excellent early Prime Day deal. However, we suggest acting fast, as Amazon deals like this one tend to go quickly. I liked the original Soundcore Motion Boom, which made our list of the best Bluetooth speakers and was one of the better mini boom box Bluetooth speaker values over the last few years, selling for around $80. The 3.66-pound Boom 2 is priced a little higher but sounds substantially better, with more than double the power rating of the original, so it not only plays louder but kicks out more bass and offers better clarity at higher volumes (it's equipped with two tweeters and one subwoofer). It also has a couple of built-in LED lights to help create that party vibe. Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money. Anker Soundcore Boom 2 speaker specs Here are the details about this mini boom box Bluetooth speaker. Drivers: 50-watt, 4-inch racetrack subwoofer and dual 15-watt tweeters 50-watt, 4-inch racetrack subwoofer and dual 15-watt tweeters Dimensions: 11.65 x 7.28 x 3.98 inches 11.65 x 7.28 x 3.98 inches Weight: 3.66 pounds 3.66 pounds Battery life: Up to 24 hours at moderate volume levels Up to 24 hours at moderate volume levels Bluetooth version: 5.3 (100-foot or 30-meter wireless range) 5.3 (100-foot or 30-meter wireless range) Water-resistance rating: IPX7 (fully waterproof and floatable) IPX7 (fully waterproof and floatable) Additional features : Built-in light show, customizable EQ, PartyCast 2.0 (link additional Anker speakers) : Built-in light show, customizable EQ, PartyCast 2.0 (link additional Anker speakers) Universal remote: Included Roku remote controls most TVs Why I like this Anker speaker The speaker's design isn't terribly sleek or eye-catching, but it's attractive enough and just the right size -- neither too big nor too small -- and you can choose between three color options. It also seems pretty durable, though it doesn't have a dust-resistance rating. The Boom 2 is fully waterproof (IPX7-rated) and floats should it fall into a body of water. Additionally, there's a USB-out port to charge your devices. Battery life is also good. The speaker's rated for up to 24 hours of playback at moderate volume levels (it charges via USB-C, which is good), and you can tweak the sound and customize the lighting with the Soundcore app for iOS and Android. Battery life does dip if you engage the bass boost or activate the LED lighting. Read more: Anker Soundcore Boom 2 Review Another Anker speaker to consider If you're looking for even more powerful sound, Anker makes the Soundcore Boom 2 Plus. A bigger speaker, it puts out more sound with similar features to the Boom 2. However, it costs around $250 (on sale for $210), and I don't think it sounds twice as good as the Boom 2 (more like 25% to 30% better). Still, it's also a good value. Read more: Best Tech Gifts Under $100 Want to check out the competition? We've tested and reviewed the best Bluetooth speakers this year, with Bose, Beats and Soundcore all featured on our list. JBL Flip 7 review: this speaker sounds as good as it looks
JBL'S FLIP speakers have a reputation for being loud, rugged, and built to last. The Flip 7 is the latest in the series, and in this JBL Flip 7 review, I've been seeing how it stacks up and whether it's worth your cash. 2 JBL Flip 7, £129.99 £119 from Amazon BUY HERE JBL launched the Flip series back in 2012, and over the years, each new model has built on its rugged, outdoorsy reputation. At a glance, the design hasn't changed much; that compact, durable tube shape is still front and centre. But beneath the surface, JBL has been steadily refining the internals. The latest addition, the JBL Flip 7, arrived earlier this year with improved battery life, JBL's signature punchy bass, and the same portable form factor fans know and love. I've tested a lot of portable audio gear, and the Flip 7 holds its own as one of the best Bluetooth speakers in its class. I've been living with it for the past couple of months to find out how it performs and whether it's worth the spend. Read on for the full review. Pros Durable mesh exterior with excellent waterproof protection Punchy bass and crisp vocals that fill indoor and outdoor spaces Lightweight and easy to carry anywhere Cons Slightly expensive compared to some competitors Battery life is solid but not industry-leading Rating: 9/10 How I tested the JBL Flip 7 JBL Flip 7, £129.99 £119 from Amazon BUY HERE Going into this review, I was curious to see if the Flip 7 could live up to everything I'd heard about JBL's speakers, especially since this was my first time trying one out for myself. To find out, I put it through some real-life tests: a few well-aimed splashes to check its waterproofing, and garden get-togethers where clear, powerful sound makes all the difference. The goal was simple: to see if the Flip 7 delivers when it matters most. The Nitty‑Gritty First impressions JBL Flip 7, £129.99 £119 from Amazon I've heard plenty of positive noise about the Flip range, and was keen to find out whether the Flip 7 could live up to the reputation that precedes it. Straight out of the box, the Flip 7 gives off a reassuringly solid, no-nonsense feel. It's compact enough to chuck in a backpack, but has enough weight in the hand to feel like a serious bit of kit. The rugged mesh exterior and rubber feet at each end give the impression it's designed to handle whatever you throw at it, from the occasional knock off a table to the unpredictable and often unforgiving British weather. It comes with two attachments: a carry handle (already attached) and a carabiner you can swap in. Both click in securely, and once fitted, neither's going anywhere. It's a small detail, but it makes a difference if you're clipping it to a bag or hanging it somewhere. Pairing it via Bluetooth was painless, taking just a few seconds the first time and then reconnecting automatically every time after, with no dropouts throughout my time using it. Does it deliver? I ran the Flip 7 through a mix of casual but telling real-world scenarios: a few afternoons in the garden, some background music during get-togethers, and a steamy bathroom while the shower was going. You don't have to baby this speaker; the IP68 rating easily handled splashes, steam, and a bit of unexpected British drizzle. Inside, it powered through the sound of running water, while outside it easily filled the garden at just 50% volume, with a clean, punchy sound that carried surprisingly well. Vocals come through crisp and natural, and there's a low-end thump that gives music a bit of weight without drowning everything else out. It's more refined than you'd expect from something this size. JBL Flip 7, £129.99 £119 from Amazon BUY HERE JBL's AI Sound Boost is on board too, which tweaks the output in real-time. I can't say I noticed it kicking in, but honestly, the Flip 7 sounds great without any noticeable help, so whatever it's doing, it's doing it quietly and well. One of the more useful additions is support for Auracast, which means you can pair it with other compatible speakers. The addition makes it more flexible if you want to build a setup down the line or link up for a bigger sound at parties. Battery life's decent, but not a standout; JBL claims up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost, and while it got close in my testing, some rivals stretch further. That said, it's still four hours more than the Flip 6 managed, so it's a step in the right direction. You'll comfortably get a full day's use, but for the price, it's not quite class-leading. Sound quality JBL Flip 7, £129.99 £119 from Amazon BUY HERE After putting everything from budget speakers to premium audio gear through their paces, I've learned to pick up on the subtle differences. While I haven't tried earlier models in the series, the Flip 7 is easily one of the best-sounding speakers I've tested in this price range. The clarity, balance, and depth are impressive, especially for something this compact. There's also support for wired USB-C playback for lossless audio, a nice bonus for those who want the absolute best fidelity from a physical connection. At £129.99, it's not cheap, but given the build quality, versatility, and sound performance, it justifies the price. For casual listeners, it might feel a bit much, but if you want something tough, loud, and genuinely enjoyable, this is it. How much is the JBL Flip 7? Now on sale for £119 (usually £129.99), it's still not the cheapest speaker out there, but with JBL, you're paying for years of expertise and a device that's as tough as it is capable. Some competitors might be cheaper, but they often skimp on waterproofing and deliver a much tinnier, less enjoyable sound. That's what makes the Flip 7 such a strong choice for anyone who values longevity and great audio quality. Where to buy the JBL Flip 7 JBL is stocked by most major UK retailers, making the Flip 7 easy to find. You can also save some cash by going down the refurbished route, even on newer models. JBL Flip 7 alternatives If the Flip 7 doesn't quite meet the bar for you, there are plenty of other options available that might. For those looking for quality on a budget, the Anker Soundcore Motion 300 offers better value on sale for £59.99 and the same sturdy portability. If it's a premium sound that you're seeking, the latest Ultimate Ears Boom 4 offers improved range and superior battery life for the same price (£129.99), but you're compromising on portability with a bulkier speaker. At the other end of the spectrum, you've got Sonos, which has perfected speakers with powerful sound and clarity, but they are pricier at £179 for the Roam 2, up to £449 for the Era 300. The JBL Flip 7 is a rugged, reliable speaker that delivers exactly what you'd expect for the price. It isn't the cheapest speaker on the shelf, but it earns its keep. You get punchy, well-balanced sound, proper rugged build quality, and features that actually add something, like Auracast and USB-C audio. Battery life could be better for the price; some rivals do go longer, but it'll still comfortably see you through a full day. If you want something reliable, portable, and genuinely fun to use day to day, this one's hard to fault. It's not perfect, but for the size and price, it gets an awful lot right.
