East Austin post office set to relocate near Manor Rd.

AUSTIN (KXAN)– The United States Postal Service has made its final decision to shut down its east Austin station and relocate its services elsewhere, according to a press release. This comes after a 30-day community feedback period. Postal services at the East Sixth Street location,1914 E. 6th St., will be moved to a new facility located at 3112 Manor Road. The tentative location is about a three mile drive from the east Austin station. However, that will only happen if an agreement is reached with the owner of the building, the release said. If an agreement cannot be reached, USPS will consider other sites within the area. The east Austin station will remain open to offer services until the new facility is open and operating. The release said the Postal Service plans to provide the same services at the new location. A previous report from KXAN highlighted resident's concerns due to the lack of locations in that part of the city, calling it a 'postal desert' emerging in east Austin. At the time, there weren't plans for a new site in east Austin. There are currently 16 USPS locations in Austin and the majority of those sites operate west of Interstate 35. 'While the Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the East Austin community, the USPS properly considered community input…' the release stated Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. What is the Canada Post strike all about? Here's what to know about the corporation and its union

Article content 'Since 2018, the Corporation has recorded more than $3 billion in losses before tax, and it will post another significant loss for 2024,' said Canada Post in a news release on Monday. 'In early 2025, the Government of Canada announced repayable funding of up to $1.034 billion for Canada Post to prevent insolvency.' Article content A part-time weekend workforce and workweek efficiencies are an immediate priority for Canada Post, the IIC report stated. Article content Commissioner William Kaplan called the union's proposals to grow its businesses 'unrealistic,' as are its plans to duplicate services provided by other companies, such as 'introducing postal banking, seniors check-ins, establishing artisanal markets at postal stations, and transforming postal stations into community social hubs.' Article content 'In my view,' wrote Kaplan, 'given the financial crisis, Canada Post must focus on saving its core business, not on providing new services.' Article content What are some of the sticking points between the union and Canada Post? Article content Article content The report summarized the main sticking points between the union and Canada Post as the corporation's financial situation, its need to diversify or alter its delivery models in response to current business demands, Canada Post's viability as it is currently configured, the union's negotiated commitments to job security and full-time employment and the need to protect the health and safety of employees. Article content Weekend work is a major sticking point that both parties cannot seem to agree upon. The new offers from Canada Post, which are now under review, maintain the need for part-time work, which increases 'the company's delivery flexibility, especially on weekends, while ensuring that letter carriers are not required to work weekend shifts.' Article content However, the union insists that 'preference should be given to full-time work,' it said in its weekend full-time concept and costing report in March. Article content Canada Post also wants to end door-to-door delivery service, which is the first recommendation made in the IIC report, because it is a financial burden. The union says that the service is worth preserving because it meets the 'needs of the Canadian people, particularly the elderly and disabled, while community mailboxes presented accessibility and other challenges.' Article content As part of its latest proposals, Canada Post said it wants to implement dynamic routing, which it says is an industry standard that involves planning and optimizing delivery routes daily and 'creating more consistent, predictable service for customers.' The report stated that the union agreed it could be cost-saving. But after a failed pilot project in 2017, Canada Post said the company and union could 'not agree on many of its core components.'

Universal Postal Union partners Visa on financial inclusion

The Universal Postal Union (UPU), a UN agency that serves as the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players, and Visa, a global leader in digital payments, have announced a strategic collaboration to expand access to digital postal financial services within the UPU network. 0 This content is provided by an external author without editing by Finextra. It expresses the views and opinions of the author. The collaboration aims to promote financial inclusion and stimulate economic development by leveraging the UN agency's international postal network and Visa's payments network. As part of the collaboration, Visa and UPU announced three programs: • Global Postal Digital Inclusive Finance Program: This program aims to help advance financial inclusion and economic resilience by providing tailored support for post offices that are digitalizing postal financial services. It will cover regions including Africa, Latin America & the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Arab world. • Improving Postal Payment Interconnectivity: Enhance the UPU network's cross-border payment capabilities by integrating with Visa's global network. • Cybersecurity & Risk Advisory Program: This initiative will leverage Visa's cybersecurity and risk credentials to assess and help enhance cybersecurity strategies, the safety and reliability of financial services within the UPU's postal payment system. Key Areas of Collaboration: • Digitalizing Postal Financial Services: Enhancing digital services such as international remittances, bill payments, and inbound payments to help meet postal operators' needs at their current stage of digitalization. • Provision of Government Services through Postal Networks: Facilitating more inclusive access to government services and payments, including disbursements and tax collection, to support national financial inclusion strategies. • Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Digitalization and Financing: Supporting the economic inclusion of MSMEs, particularly women-owned businesses, through digital solutions like e-marketplaces and mobile-based loan disbursements. • Cybersecurity and Risk Management: Strengthening cybersecurity measures and risk mitigation tools to help protect the international postal network from potential cyber threats. The new collaboration builds on the success of the UPU Financial Inclusion Technical Assistance Facility (FITAF), an initiative supported by Visa and the Gates Foundation that helps postal operators in developing countries provide financial services to local communities. Rajiv Garodia, Head of Visa Government Solutions, said: "Visa is committed to using our global network and innovative technology to help empower governments and drive financial inclusion globally. The UPU is a perfect collaborator for us in this respect as it plays a significant role in providing financial services to 1.5 billion people worldwide'. Siva Somasundram, Director of Policy, Regulation, and Markets at the UPU, said: At the UPU, we strive to foster international collaborations to drive the improvement of financial services, digital transformation, financial inclusion, innovation, and knowledge sharing within our postal network. Our goal is to diversify digital postal financial products and solutions to ensure that every community – no matter how remote – has access to relevant, reliable, and efficient services. Promoting public-private partnerships, like the one with Visa, is a priority for the UPU in delivering sustainable and scalable digital solutions that meet the needs of underserved postal customers – helping them access digital payments, digital savings, credit, and inclusive insurance, while supporting national financial inclusion goals.'

Sub-post office reopens with postal only services

A sub-post office within a convenience store in the Manx capital is offering postal services only following a refurbishment. The facility in Governor's Hill, which had been shut since 23 April, will no longer be providing agency services such as MiCard pension and benefit payments, bill payment services or foreign exchange. It comes after Treasury's announcement that it would terminate the MiCard service in December 2025, as it was "no longer viable". However, postage services at the store, which is operated by Mannin Retail, will be available for longer hours from 08:00 until 21:00 BST seven days a week. The move also comes amid a government push to digitise the delivery of many of its services. The Isle of Man Post Office said it "acknowledges the substantial impact" the termination of MiCard and digitisation of vehicle licensing would have on demand for counter services, which together accounted for 75% of non-postal transactions last year. For those who require non-postal services, the nearest sub-post office was the Spar outlet in Willaston, it added.
