Dubai to host qualifier for 2027 men's Rugby World Cup in November

The UAE is set to host the final qualification tournament for the men's Rugby World Cup 2027, with the event scheduled to take place from November 8-18 at the end of the year in Dubai. The final chapter in the qualification journey - set to take place at the Sevens Stadium - will determine the 24th and last team to earn their place at the showpiece tournament in Australia, which will run from October 1 to November 13, 2027. A total of four teams will compete in a round-robin format across three match-days in Dubai. The team finishing top of the standings will secure the final spot at the World Cup, completing the line-up for what promises to be the biggest and most inclusive edition of the tournament to date. It will be the first edition to feature an expanded format with 24 teams, a new round of 16 and an increase in the number of matches to 52. Belgium are the first team confirmed to participate in the event, having finished fifth in the Rugby Europe Championship 2025. They will be joined by three more teams still to be determined through ongoing regional qualification pathways; the Rugby Africa Cup 2025, the Asia Rugby Championship 2025, the Sudamerica Rugby Championship, and the Pacific Nations Cup 2025. The men's pool draw will take place in December and will be based on the World Rugby men's rankings at the end of the November international window. With the rankings set to determine the banding of teams for the draw, every result between now and December could directly impact the makeup of the six pools of four. Fixtures played during the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia will not be counted towards the rankings used for Rugby World Cup seeding purposes. World Rugby chair Brett Robinson said: 'The final qualification tournament is always a thrilling, do-or-die moment in the build-up to Rugby World Cup – and it's fitting that we bring it to a world-class destination like Dubai. "As we head towards the most inclusive and globally representative tournament ever, with 24 teams competing in an expanded format and at least one nation from each of our regional associations, this final step on the 'Journey to Australia 2027' will be a celebration of ambition, resilience and the global spirit of rugby. We cannot wait to see which team earns the final place and joins us for what promises to be a unique celebration of rugby and Australia in 2027.'

Euro 2028 co-hosts denied automatic qualification but will have safety net

England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland will not be handed automatic qualification for the Euro 2028 finals. However, the host nations may be able to take advantage of a safety net should they not book a place at the first time of asking. Uefa 's executive committee announced after its meeting in Bilbao on Wednesday as expected that the co-hosts will take part in the qualifying phase, during which 12 groups of four or five teams will battle it out to be one of the 24 which will contest the finals. The group winners and the best eight runners-up will go straight through with further spots, should they be required, reserved for the two best-ranked hosts who have not made it into that group. A statement said: "The Uefa executive committee has confirmed the qualification format for Euro 2028, to be held across nine venues in the UK and Ireland with 24 participating teams. "As in the current 2024-26 European Qualifiers, 12 qualifying groups will be formed of four or five teams. Hosts England, Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales will also participate in qualifying, drawn into separate groups. "The 12 group winners and 8 best runners-up (20 teams) will advance directly to the Euro 2028 final tournament. "Two spots in the final tournament will be reserved for the two best-ranked host nations who are not qualified as group winners or best runners-up after the completion of the qualifying group stage." The fortunes of the host nations will dictate how many of the remaining four places are up for grabs in a play-off phase involving the remaining runners-up and the best-ranked 2026/27 Nations League non-qualified group winners. If both available berths are used by host countries, eight teams would compete in two paths for the remaining two in single-leg semi-finals and finals; if only one is needed, 12 teams would fight it out in three paths on a similar basis. Should neither be required, eight teams would play four home and away ties with the winners making it through to the tournament, the schedule for which is expected to be released in the autumn of this year.

(AP Photo/Michael Conroy) INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — It was three familiar faces at the top of the Indianapolis 500 qualifying board after the first round of time trials, with two-time defending IndyCar series champion Alex Palou holding the provisional pole. Palou, winner of four of the first five races this season, qualified at 233.043 mph in a Honda-powered entry to top the Team Penske drivers of Scott McLaughlin and two-time defending Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden. Advertisement McLaughlin went 233.013 and Newgarden was third at 233.004. A year ago, all three Penske cars swept the front row at Indianapolis 500 and Newgarden used a last-lap pass to put himself in position to become the first driver to win 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing' three consecutive years in next Sunday's race. Qualifying on Saturday decides the fast 12 that will run again Sunday to set the first four rows and the pole. Drivers that qualify in spots 13 through 30 lock in their positions, but the slowest four cars or those unable to post a time Saturday go into a last-chance shootout Sunday to determine the final three spots on the 33-car grid. One driver will not make the field. It's a crapshoot who the bottom four will be midway through Saturday's qualifying session. While Palou, McLaughlin and Newgarden are likely done for the day, Team Penske had Will Power back in line to make another run and he approved his position into the top-12 at 10th. Advertisement But the track conditions have been the worst of the week with heavy wind gusts that have affected handling on the cars and played into two frightening crashes: Marcus Armstrong wrecked in morning practice and his backup was not ready when it was his turn to make his qualifying attempt. Eventually cleared by the IndyCar medical staff to compete, he's hopeful to get a qualifying run in Saturday and not be relegated to Sunday's shootout. Same for Colton Herta, who crashed in nearly the same spot as Armstrong in a much scarier wreck during his qualifying attempt. Herta's car actually flipped on its side and he was stuck riding the wall, cockpit side facing the concrete. His team desperately tried to reach him on the radio to check on him but the car was so mangled, Herta could not reach the button to answer Andretti Global. He currently has no qualifying time posted and could be in the bottom four shootout if Andretti does not have a car ready for him by the time Saturday's session ends. Also struggling were Graham Rahal, who failed to qualify for the race in 2023 and can't get a handle of his car so far. Advertisement Not qualified so far are Rahal, Jacob Abel, Armstrong and Herta. Kyle Larson, who is attempting to run both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, is locked into the Indy field but not in position to run the fast 12. Arrow McLaren sent him back out Saturday and he improved from 27th to 16th. ___ AP auto racing:
