KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — National top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah have risen to a career-high world number two in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released today. Pearly-Thinaah climbed one spot with 89,416 points, trailing only China's Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning, who remain in the top position with 111,634 points. Former national women's doubles pair, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty were the last Malaysian pair to reach this high, back in 2009. Meanwhile, another national pair, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing, broke into the top 20, moving up two spots to rank 20th with 45,090 points. In men's doubles, China Open 2025 runners-up Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik maintained their second-place ranking with 94,950 points, behind Japan Open 2025 champions Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae of South Korea with 99,405 points. Former world number one and professional pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani dropped one spot to fourth with 80,980 points. In mixed doubles, national duo Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei returned to the top three with 85,013 points, climbed one spot from fourth. Independent pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie dropped two spots to eighth place with 72,998 points, while national pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin slipped to 16th from 13th with 52,363 points. In the men's singles, Leong Jun Hao is currently Malaysia's top-ranked player, climbing two spots to 24th with 46,551 points while professional shuttler Lee Zii Jia, sidelined by injury since March, fell two spots to 35th with 38,890 points. In the women's singles category, national shuttler K. Letshanaa rose one place to 41st with 32,918 points, while professional player Goh Jin Wei dropped two places to 47th with 30,165 points. — Bernama

A recent ranking of college football coaches by an ESPN analyst has some fans so outraged that they're ready to bring out the pitchforks. In a recent post on X, the College Football Alerts (@CFBAlerts_) account shared a recent ranking of college football coaches by ESPN's Bill Connelly. That ranking failed to include Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman anywhere in the top 30, and fans quickly started giving Connelly hell for it: "Bill, can you provide why coach Marcus Freeman wasn't placed in your top 30? Perhaps the criterion used explains? Genuinely interested, thank you," one user wrote. "Bill Connelly of ESPN is a Hack! You've got Purdue coach at number 11 and Marcus Freeman of Notre Dame not even on that list. Tell me you don't know college football without telling me you don't know college football!" wrote another. "Not having Marcus Freeman on this list is criminal work! Bill should be arrested!" a third wrote. "I'd change my name so that I wouldn't be linked to this joke." There was only one problem: The post was completely misconstrued. In Connelly's original post, he actually made it a post of the top coaches of the past 20 years and even had Freeman as his No. 6 coach among active coaches. He shared CFBAlert's post and admonished them for framing it in a way to "generate the most toxic possible responses." "It's a shame you guys forgot to link to the piece in question and decided to frame it in the way that would generate the most toxic possible responses," Connelly wrote in response. Unfortunately, fans still took serious issue with Connelly's ranking even after his clarifying statement: "This is really great, now I know when your name is attached to an article I can skip it," one user declared. "Your rankings are crap. No matter how you try to explain it away. Kirby is #1 on every other persons list but yours," wrote another. "It doesn't matter how you got there. This list is (expletive) garbage and shows how stupid you are. Defend it however you need to, it's an embarrassing list." It doesn't seem like ESPN will be canning Connelly over this one though. US drops to record low in ranking of most powerful passports
The United States has dropped to its lowest position yet in the ranking of most powerful passport in the world. Americans once held the strongest passport for visa-free entry, with the US most recently topping the list in 2014. According to the latest ranking, it has now dropped down to tenth place. The list has been produced by the Henley Passport Index, which is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It analyzes how many countries a passport holder can enter without a prior visa. In what has been a downward trend, the US is now tied with Iceland and Lithuania with 182 destinations. The three most powerful passports are all from Asian countries, with Singapore's passport – allowing visa-free entry to 193 destinations - holding the top spot. Next, Japan and South Korea are tied with 190 destinations. In third place, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain - all countries in the European Union - tie with 189 possible destinations. This makes for a staggering mobility gap of 168 destinations between the top-and bottom-ranked passports. As for biggest risers, the UAE continues to be a standout, shooting up 34 places over the last 10 years from 42nd to eighth place. China is also quickly moving up the rankings, rising 34 places from 94 to 60 since 2015 - an especially impressive feat, considering China has not yet gained visa-free access to Europe's Schengen Area. Meanwhile, the biggest faller on these rankings is Venezuela, which plunged 15 places from 30 to 45. Christian H. Kaelin, who is credited with creating the index, said in a news release that the latest findings highlight an 'increasingly competitive landscape in global mobility,' with the most successful countries demonstrating proactive efforts to engage with others. Dr. Juerg Steffen, Chief Executive Officer at Henley & Partners, says this trend is reshaping the investment migration landscape. 'Americans are now leading the demand worldwide for alternative residence and citizenship options, with British nationals also among the top five globally. 'As the US and UK adopt increasingly inward-looking policies, we're witnessing a marked rise in interest from their citizens seeking greater global access and security. 'Your passport is no longer just a travel document - it's a reflection of your country's diplomatic influence and international relationships.
