Here's a better look at Gmail's Material 3 Expressive makeover, rolling out to some users

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google has begun rolling out Gmail's Material 3 Expressive redesign via a server-side switch to some users. Design updates include more color usage, rounded cards, minor changes to the Compose button, and a new swipe animation design. Material 3 Expressive is the flavor of the season, even though the broader rollout for Android 16's core-system UX will happen later in the year. The design language has already debuted with Android 16 QPR1 beta, and we're seeing plenty of Google apps get updated to adopt it. Google already showed off Gmail's Material 3 Expressive makeover, but we now have a better look as it has begun rolling out to some users. With the Gmail app v2025.05.11 release, Google seems to have flipped a server-side switch that enables Material 3 Expressive design changes to the Gmail app. User SparkRadar on Telegram received these changes and shared some of the screenshots below: One of the bigger changes with Gmail's Material 3 Expressive redesign is that you'll see a bit more color throughout the app, with the card-based UI fostering more tonal variations. Currently, Gmail uses a primary color accent on the main landing screen, except for the Search box, bottom tab, and Compose button, which are all differently accented. With its Material 3 Expressive redesign, the message list sits as a card on top of a lighter background, and you can make out the subtle rounded corners on the top and bottom. The compose button also uses a thicker font, and the pencil icon is now filled. Current Gmail UI Upcoming Gmail UI with Material 3 Expressive Upcoming Gmail UI with Material 3 Expressive Upcoming Gmail UI with Material 3 Expressive On one of their Gmail accounts, the account switcher also happens to sit outside the search bar, which is new. Some screenshots show the account switcher inside the search bar, as it is currently, because server-side features often get activated on a per-account basis. We can see the card-based UI again in action within the email screen. While the card-based order summary snippet already existed, the email screen adopts the same, but with a different edge-to-edge width. Further, from what we can observe, the colors for the order summary snippet are now lighter. Current Gmail UI Upcoming Gmail UI with Material 3 Expressive Further, as Google had already highlighted, the Gmail app's Material 3 Expressive release also includes a new pill-shaped button animation for the swipe gestures: As mentioned, these changes are being gradually rolled out through a server-side switch. We expect more and more users to receive the new update in the coming days. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . New macOS theme hints at something big

Apple insider Mark Gurman says in the latest edition of his newsletter Power On that macOS is about to undergo a new overhaul, and possibly get the moniker 'Tahoe'. This redesign will be part of the company's major rebranding effort that it will announce at WWDC ( Worldwide Developers Conference ) this macOS has, since 2013, been named after famous places found in the state of California. The company also has a habit of naming macOS with a very popular location's name when there is a major redesign or other overhaul to look forward to. These names also sometimes give a little indication of what users can expect from their MacBook and Mac computers going year, Apple is apparently naming the new version of macOS — macOS 26 — after Lake Tahoe. A gorgeous lake surrounded by mountains, this place is home to resorts and is also a famous vacation spot for people in the U.S. And, Gurman was able to spot something really Tahoe is known for showing the reflection of the sky and the surrounding mountains on its surface. As Gurman notes, this is very likely a hint at the overall redesign that every Apple operating system is getting this year. These redesign will be inspired by the company's visionOS, which powers the Apple Vision Pro headset. The visionOS user interface. | Image credit — Apple Gurman believes that macOS 26 will be a significant change over its predecessor. If I had to guess, we're going to get a lot more productivity-focused improvements. Apple is apparently bringing certain long-awaited macOS features to iPadOS this year, so it only stands to reason that macOS itself is getting new goodies too. While WWDC 2025 will be a much more subdued affair compared to last year's event, Apple is likely going to be announcing Apple Intelligence support for its developer tools. I wouldn't be surprised if similar small-scale AI support for certain features in macOS gets expanded on with Tahoe. Apple is saving its AI advancements for next year, when it hopes to catch up to Samsung and Google in that regard. This year's software overhaul is the company's way of getting the hype going without outright admitting that it has fallen behind in the tech industry's newest craze. Then again, given how most consumers feel about AI, Apple's redesign might be the most interesting announcement we see this year.

These design changes are not yet live and will likely roll out after Android 16 QPR1 hits the stable channel. Google is working on updating its apps in line with Android's new Material 3 Expressive design language. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. We first spotted a few in-development visual and functional changes for the Google TV app while sifting through a beta release this March. At the time, we shared screenshots showcasing an updated blue color palette and a new Recent searches section on the search page, as well as code related to an upcoming Hot and New tab. Although these changes are yet to go live, we've spotted a few new interface updates in the latest Google TV release (version 4.39.3208.761013668.5). Current For You page UI Updated For You page UI Current For You page UI Updated For You page UI As shown in the attached screenshots, the app's For You tab could get much more colorful with an updated search icon and gradient that pulls the accent color from the current image in the preview carousel. The text, buttons, and carousel position indicator also feature this accent color and are larger than before. Current movie/show page UI Updated movie/show page UI Current loading screen Updated loading screen In addition to the updated For You page, the accented UI elements can be seen on the loading screen and movie/show pages. However, the movie/show pages don't have a colorful gradient or accented buttons underneath the preview image. Lastly, the updated design has a blue 'Connect TV' floating action button (FAB) instead of a dull gray one. These changes give the Google TV app a more lively appearance, but you'll have to wait a while to get them on your phone. The app's Material 3 Expressive redesign is not live for end users and will likely roll out after Android 16 QPR1 hits the stable channel. We'll update this post as soon as it's widely available.
