Adored Italian restaurant with 90 branches across the UK closes in town centre after serving customers for over 9 years

A POPULAR Italian restaurant branch is sadly set to close its doors in a north of England town centre. Bella Italia has announced the closure of its Darlington branch at the end of its current lease in early July. 2 It was one of the first restaurants to open in the DL1 complex when it launched in 2016. But it is now set to wrap up operations at the site after nine years of serving happy customer s. No specific reason has been given for the restaurant's sudden closure. However, Bella Italia has confirmed the branch will close its doors in the first week of July. A spokesperson for the chain paid tribute to the "fantastic" branch staff as they announced the closure. They said: 'We can confirm that our restaurant in Darlington will cease trading at the end of our current lease in the first week of July. "We would like to thank our fantastic team at Darlington who have done an amazing job over the years. "We would also like to thank our wonderful Darlington guests; we hope to see them again in one of our other north-east restaurants." It comes as number of big name businesses continue to pull out of the DL1 complex in Darlington's town centre. Tomahawk Steakhouse, Prezzo, Mango Bean are among the others to have left the site. A spokesperson told the Northern Echo in April that it is 'still in the process of reviewing future plans and no final decision has yet been made regarding reopening'. Bella Italia remains one of Britain's most popular Italian restaurant chains, with dozens of venues across the UK and Ireland. Its parent company went into administration in 2020 at the height of the COVID pandemic. The company would be acquired and re-branded later that year.

Top chef who appeared on MasterChef suddenly closes former Michelin restaurant – just a year after it lost its star

A former MasterChef star has had to close his once Michelin-starred restaurant with immediate effect just a year after it lost its accolade. Peter Sanchez-Iglesias Bristol has now closed its doors for good. 2 2 The former MasterChef star opened Paco Tapas in 2016 as a more casual pizza joint and cavernous tapas bar to his family's other Michelin restaurant, Casamia. It was named after Peter's father who helped him design the menu, and was a nod to his heritage by specialising in tapas and sherries. A statement from the Paco Tapas team, including Peter, Paco and mother Sue, said: 'It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Paco Tapas is closing with immediate effect. 'This decision has not come easily, and it marks the end of a chapter filled with incredible memories, dedicated teamwork, and the joy of sharing our passion for Spanish food and hospitality with all of you. 'Though this is goodbye for now, the spirit of Paco lives on in every memory made around our tables. "We are deeply grateful for every one of you who has walked through our doors." Paco Tapas was a restaurant idea formed by Peter with his late brother Jonray who he lost to skin cancer in 2015. It gained a Michelin star within a year of opening over seven years ago. Peter appeared in the 2023 series of amateur MasterChef as he guided contestants through a cooking challenge. He also owns the Spanish-Mexican restaurant Decimo in London's King's Cross. Britain's retail apocalypse: why your favourite stores KEEP closing down The city of Bristol has now been left with just one Michelin-starred restaurant. Closure of Paco Tapas also means Peter no longer has a presence in the city where he made his name, as Casa and the family's other Pi Shop pizza restaurant also closed. What is happening in the hospitality industry? Food and drink chains in general have been suffering as the cost of living has led to fewer people spending on eating out. Businesses had been struggling to bounce back after the pandemic, only to be hit with soaring energy bills and inflation. Multiple chains have been affected, including The Browns Bar and Brassierie which closed one of its 26 venues across the country earlier this month, as well as popular French style chain Bistrot Pierre which closed eight of its 18 sites. A number of other celebrity chef and Michelin-star holders have faced a tough year of restaurant closures. Their sites include those fronted by celebrity cook Gordon Ramsay, and renowned French chef Anne-Sophie Pic. Trade challenges for restaurants have been linked to cost pressures and declining consumer confidence. Experts predict some 6,000 restaurants could close down this year.

Beloved Fast Food Chain Makes Telling Move After Closing Hundreds of Locations

Last month, beloved West Coast fast food chain Jack in the Box announced that it would be closing hundreds of locations around the country, but the chain made a telling move that highlights the chain's long-term plans. Back in April, Jack in the Box announced plans to close about 150 or 200 of its "underperforming restaurants" across the country. "Jack in the Box will implement a block closure program, which is projected to result in the closure of approximately 150-200 underperforming restaurants — a majority of which have been in the system for over three decades," the company wrote in a press release on April 23, 2025. "The program will consist of approximately 80-120 restaurant closures between now and 12/31/2025, with the remaining underperforming restaurants closing thereafter based upon respective franchise agreement termination dates," the restaurant chain's press release continued. While closures of this magnitude and scale don't often paint an optimistic picture for businesses going forward, it seems like Jack in the Box is not merely closing locations, but it is also planning expansion. According to a report from Bob Vitale of The Columbus Dispatch, Jack in the Box is planning expansion throughout Ohio. "The company that owns the 74-year-old restaurant chain already has come to Powell and Whitehall with its other brand, Del Taco. A Jack in the Box representative told The Dispatch that it's seeking new locations for both, though, in the Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dayton areas," Vitale wrote for The Columbus Dispatch this week. This is a telling move from the fast food chain as it indicates that despite the recent plans to close hundreds of locations, the chain still has expansion plans, which will be good news for its fans and customers. Oscar's Taco House Closing After 63 Years for Odd Reason

A beloved Mexican restaurant in San Antonio will be closing its doors on June 28 after more than 60 years in business. Oscar's Taco House confirmed to My San Antonio that the restaurant will close next month. The restaurant, which launched in 1962, was set to close on May 15, but was granted an extension from the city to stay open for another month. Restaurant owner Alex Pruneda revealed the odd details to My San Antonio where he confirmed the restaurant's closing due to a city project. "The city bought us. They've been saying it for five or 10 years now that they want to build a bridge," Pruneda said. "Our last day here will be June 28." He admitted Oscar's Taco House has been anticipating the bridge project for years, but received word the city wanted the close the restaurant early than anticipated. "They wanted us out by May 15, but I sent them a letter and I told them that was too soon," Pruneda said. "I got 32 employees, it'd be nice to let them know ahead of time." After receiving an extension to stay open, Pruneda said that several employees have agreed to see the restaurant through to the end. "The multi-phased project, titled South Zarzamora Street Overpass at Union Pacific Railroad, is a part of the City of San Antonio's 2022-2027 Bond Program. The bridge is intended to improve mobility and safety on South Zarzamora Street, according to the project website," My San Antonio Taco House Closing After 63 Years for Odd Reason first appeared on Men's Journal on May 24, 2025
