The 8BitDo Pro 3 has just been announced by the popular controller brand It's due to release in August in the US, and October in the UK Pre-orders have now begun at Amazon Controller manufacturer 8BitDo has announced its next big gamepad, the 8BitDo Pro 3. It'll be a successor to the 8BitDo Pro 2, which remains listed in our guide to the best Xbox controllers and is a superb budget retro gaming option. The brand revealed the 8BitDo Pro 3 controller via its official X / Twitter account. You're able to pre-order it now for $69.99 / £59.99 at Amazon, and it'll begin shipping from August 12, 2025 in the US. However, UK folks will seemingly have to wait a bit longer until October 10, 2025. Color-wise it comes in three flavors; a SNES-inspired 'G Classic', a more traditional 'Gray', and an eye-catching 'Purple' variant. The 8BitDo Pro 3 sounds like it has a mightily impressive feature set, packing Hall effect-like TMR thumbsticks, extra remappable bumper buttons, Hall effect triggers, and Trigger locks. For me, though, the standout feature has to be its swappable magnetic face buttons, as well as the optional joystick modules that could make the 8BitDo Pro 3 perfect for the best fighting games. And much like the 8BitDo Pro 2 before it, likely also a great fit for retro gaming, be that on PC or via Nintendo Switch Online's various retro libraries. On that note, 8BitDo has confirmed the controller is compatible with both Switch and Switch 2, as well as PC, Mac, SteamOS, and Android devices. While this initial model doesn't appear to be compatible with Xbox like its predecessor, there's the possibility another model will be made for the console, as 8BitDo tends to do with its other pads including the 8BitDo Ultimate 2. Embattled retro gaming YouTuber shares update, launches new channel

TL;DR Once Were Nerd, the Italian YouTuber under fire for reviewing handhelds, has shared an update on his channel. The case is still active, but authorities have already requested his channel be shut down. YouTube is reviewing the case, but he has proactively created a new channel. The retro gaming community has rallied behind the embattled Italian YouTuber Once Were Nerd, who faces a massive fine and possible jail time for reviewing emulation handhelds with pre-loaded ROMs. He has now posted a short update amid the media frenzy, although it may be his last. In a YouTube Short embedded below, Once Were Nerd creator Francesco Salicini thanked his followers for their support, and revealed that authorities have already requested that his channels be taken down. This includes not just his website and YouTube channel, but also his Twitch, Facebook, Instagram, Discord, and Telegram. While his website is already unavailable for many users in Italy, YouTube is still reviewing the case. He has removed all videos covering ANBERNIC handhelds, but his stance is still that he didn't break any community guidelines. There are countless other YouTubers reviewing the same products, many of which are readily available on Amazon Italy, complete with pre-loaded ROMs. Still, he has taken the proactive step of creating a second channel in case his first is shut down. He would lose over 220 videos and nearly 50,000 subscribers, but at least he can continue his career as a YouTuber. At the moment, the second channel doesn't have any uploads, but if things continue to escalate, that's where you can find future updates. That said, Francesco did mention that he has to be careful with what he says. Anything he says can be used against him in court, so his lawyers have advised him to avoid giving more details about the case. Ultimately, his main wish is for all of this to blow over so he can get back to creating YouTube videos for his followers. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . The best emulation frontend just added native Android game and app support

Nick Fernandez / Android Authority TL;DR ES-DE Frontend just launched version 3.3.0, with native Android game and app support. Previously workarounds required a separate file and a few extra steps. The update also added support for new emulators and four additional languages. When it comes to retro emulators on Android, organizing your files and emulators can be a nightmare. Even with a properly formatted microSD card stacked with your legally-ripped ROMs, it's still a pain to browse your games on most emulators. Emulation frontends solve this problem, and now one of the best, ES-DE Frontend, has finally incorporated native Android game and app support. Apart from touchscreen support, this was the main missing feature of the otherwise excellent Android port of Emulation Station. On previous versions it was technically possible to add Android apps and games to the menu, but it required a separate file download and some extra file configurations. Now, it will work out of the box. This feature is also available on Linux, Windows, and macOS to import desktop apps, Steam games, and more. Android apps and games are now automatically added to ES-DE Frontend. Version 3.3.0 adds support for new emulators, most notably the Sega Model 3 arcade platform. It also removes the MAME4droid 2024 emulator, replacing the entry with the new name, MAME4droid Current. You may need to change your default emulator in the Alternative Emulators section in settings as a result. Apart from that, ES-DE Frontend now supports four additional languages: Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, and Portuguese (Portugal). That brings the total supported languages to over 20. Check out the detailed list of updates in the official 3.3.0 changelog. The desktop version of ES-DE is available for free, but the Android version requires a one-time purchase on Patreon, costing roughly $5. If you're a fan of retro gaming handhelds from Retroid, AYN, ANBERNIC, and others, it's more than worth the price of entry. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . The Commodore 64 Is Back—and More Gamer-Fueled Than Ever With a Transparent RGB Case

The Commodore 64 deserves to have a happy ending it never got in life. You've likely seen at least one of those rounded beige rectangles sitting prone and forlorn in some office or forgotten attic. For those who loved their age-old home computer, the big blocky keyboard is back, and for $300 you can get what may be the most accurate recreation of the classic computer, no software emulation required. At least, it will be when the company manages to finalize the operating system and produce all the parts. For those wondering just what the hell the Commodore 64 is, it's a home computer that first saw the light of day in 1982, and at the time it was one of the best-selling computers in the world. The 8-bit device had unique qualities for the time, with advanced sound and graphics capabilities that made it one of the early leaders for at-home computer gaming thanks to its compatibility with cartridges. More than that, it managed to make computing accessible thanks to it selling in stores beyond specialty computer retailers. There wasn't any true sequel to the Commodore 64, save for some early Commodore 65 prototypes. Though makers of the Commodore 64 had success with devices like the Amiga 1000, the company discontinued the C64 in 1995 and shortly after declared bankruptcy. So what is the new Commodore 64 Ultimate and what do you get in the box? Everything you need to know is below… OVERVIEW• The Commodore 64 Ultimate comes in 3 varieties: Basic Beige, Starlight Edition, and Founders Edition.• This is the first official Commodore 64… — Commodore Computer Museum 🕹 (@MuseumCommodore) July 12, 2025This isn't the first attempt at a C64 emulation device, but it could be the most thorough. The modern recreation is using field-programmable gate array technology, or FPGA, to emulate the original computer's design and chip logic. It means the device is fully compatible with all the old software and games that made the device such a hit in the first place. The $300 Basic Beige comes bundled with a cassette-style USB that includes some music, demos, and games, including a 'new sequel' to the C64 original title Jupiter Lander: Ascension. The device still has modern amenities like HDMI and Wi-Fi, so you're not going to need to find a working modem. The Commodore Computer Museum X account said this version resembles the Ultimate 64 Elite II version. The creator of that C64 version, engineer Gideo Zweijtzer, is named as a 'launch partner' on the company's team page. The device is up for preorder, though the company claims that the money is going toward production, almost like a Kickstarter. Commodore claims 'most parts are already in production,' and they are mostly looking to fund manufacturing parts like the keyboard base. A preorder 'also helps power the full reboot of the Commodore brand.' The device is $300 at base, but that doesn't account for tariffs that will come through as a 'tariff tax' at checkout. If you want to see some of the internal components in all their glory, you'll need to opt for the $350 Starlight Edition that also has RGB LEDs under the hood to bathe your desktop in retro goodness. There's a separate, limited 'Founders Edition' for $500 with clear amber plastic. While there will only be 6,400 of those made, Commodore says every device will have Easter eggs in the form of the names and/or autographs of the original C64 creators etched on the motherboard. Commodore Corp., which was bought up by YouTuber and actor Christian 'Peri Fractic' Simpson in a deal he announced on his channel June 30. He said he bought the company for 'a low seven-figure sum,' though he did not reveal the total amount or offer any other details about what went into the purchase. The precise nature of the deal is still in limbo, and the company's new owners admit on the site that the deal is 'close to fruition.' The company added, 'This is a carefully structured process focused on security and long-term sustainability,' and promised it will still make the hardware no matter what happens with the Commodore buyout. Simpson previously announced his intent to buy Commodore a month ago, and things have moved quickly since then. Even with the new Commodore team's promises for full refunds, the uncertainty is enough that I'd advise some hesitation before smashing the buy button on a brand-new FPGA Commodore 64, even if the translucent edition with built-in LED lights looks spiffy. The device won't ship until October at the earliest, which gives us enough time to see what kind of pronouncements the dev team makes in the coming weeks and months.

ModRetro Announces Return of the ModRetro Chromatic With New Exciting Extras

The ModRetro Chromatic captured the hearts of retro enthusiasts and those who grew up playing the Game Boy and Game Boy Colour. Still, after its initial launch in late 2024, the pixel-perfect handheld has become exceedingly difficult to find in the wild, that is, until now. ModRetro Chromatic has announced that their popular handheld device will enter mass production and become a permanent fixture in the new supply chain. Not only that, but to sweeten the pot, ModRetro promises a brand-new colourway for the ModRetro Chromatic to coincide with the release of some classic new games for the Game Boy successor on top of the already existing lineup of fun colours, with the latest variant joining the lineup labelled as Cloud, which features a white and purple treatment, somewhat reminiscent of the Super Nintendo. Additionally, the long-awaited rechargeable battery pack for the ModRetro Chromatic will be made available alongside a mod pack, which allows those who like to tinker to swap out parts, refreshing or customizing their handheld to their choosing. In addition, ModRetro will also release a branded Link cable and Koss Porta Pro headphones to complement the handheld, completing the retro arsenal of gaming goodness. A detailed breakdown of the accessories and new games coming to the ModRetro Chromatic can be viewed below: Sabrina: The Animated Series – Zapped! A re-release of the fast-paced platformer based on the cartoon series, where you switch between Sabrina and Salem to reverse a magical mishap. Wicked Plague: A side-scrolling Metroidvania with fast-paced action, haunting visuals, and intense boss fights in a cursed tower. Self-Simulated: A high-speed precision platformer with over 100 levels, customizable assists, and a story about reclaiming your lost identity. First Contact Protocol: An adventure-puzzle game with branching choices, cinematic cutscenes, and a crew fighting to survive aboard a damaged starship. Gravitorque: A puzzle platformer where you control gravity instead of jumping, solving mind-bending levels across four distinct worlds. ModRetro Rechargeable Power Core ($29.99): Snap-in battery for up to 16 hours of gameplay. ModRetro Link Cable ($14.99): Bring back couch co-op with head-to-head multiplayer support. ModRetro Mod Kit ($14.99): Personalizes or refreshes with high-quality, swappable parts and a one-of-a-kind dual-sided screwdriver. ModRetro Koss Porta Pro ($49.99): A colour-matched retro headset with legendary sound. On the software side of things, ModRetro promises new features via firmware updates for the ModRetro Chromatic, including native streaming via Discord on Mac and PC, with no additional dock required. Finally, official ModRetro cartridges will now be able to receive game updates or patches via what ModRetro is calling its Cart Clinic service, ensuring that all physical games are free of bugs or issues going forward. Lastly, ModRetro plans to team up with some major names in the gaming space, including Ubisoft, Atari, and Argonaut Games; however, details are scarce for now. Nevertheless, this collaboration is exciting for the future of the ModRetro Chromatic. For further details, readers are encouraged to visit the official ModRetro Chromatic website. For those who missed out on the initial wave of handhelds, which sold out almost immediately, portable gaming enthusiasts can rest easy in knowing that ModRetro will deliver more units, hopefully making the ModRetro Chromatic more readily available alongside its expanding library of new and classic releases that bring the Gameboy into the modern age while retaining that authentic look and feel of the original. And if you're new or unfamiliar with the system, the ModRetro Chromatic is fully compatible with both DMG Game Boy titles and Game Boy Color games, which further take advantage of the sapphire crystal 1:1 display of the handheld, making it one of the best ways to play your classic library of games.
