Cricket Tasmania says the proposed roof for the Macquarie Point stadium needs total redesign

Dom Baker We'd love to be able to play cricket under a roof. I mean, when this was first muted, it got a lot of interest right around world cricket. Unfortunately, the design that's been put in front of us so far with the grid-like pattern that falls across the playing field and basically stays there until the sun goes down makes it extremely difficult for cricket to be played there. Leon Compton And so is it as simple as saying if you want to play cricket there, you can't have a lattice-like support structure holding up the roof over the ground? Dom Baker No, that's probably a little simplistic, but I mean, the reality is if we're to play cricket under a roof, the structure needs to be set up so that it doesn't cast that type of shadow. That's correct, right? So, and so then you've got to look at the level of opaqueness of the material they're using to cover the roof, the structure itself that holds the roof up, all those kinds of things. So, I mean, it's not unusual that as you go through the design process, you hit snags and you've got to really come together and work those out. So, look, we've looked at a couple of mitigation options that didn't actually make a hell of a lot of difference. So it's probably now back to the designers and the engineers to say what they can do. If they want to keep the roof, well, it needs to be redesigned. Leon Compton It needs to be redesigned. You say in your letter that could include consideration of a stadium with no roof or a retractable roof as happens at Docklands. My understanding is that the cost of building anything with a retractable roof increases significantly. Yeah, I mean, you're watching this issue. Can the government afford that? Dom Baker Yeah, look, the greatest form of a retractable roof is not to have one at all, I think. But yeah, look, the retractable roof piece, I'm not 100 per cent across the detail of the cost, but it has been said to me also that that will come at a pretty hefty total to put a retractable roof in there. But I think the other piece of this is what this stadium will do is leave a legacy for a long time. So we have to be thinking, what's the best possible design we can put onto that space so that we're not automatically starting to regret decisions that we made early on just to cut corners or to cut costs.
