New app highlights safe and fast Ottawa bike routes
A new app is helping Ottawa cyclists plan safe and fast routes across the city. CTV's Camille Wilson has the details. An advocacy group has created a new app that focuses on safe and fast biking routes in Ottawa. The free Cycling Guide app from Bike Ottawa offers bikers the best available, low-stress, comfortable and cycling-friendly routes to get around. The mobile app is helping people navigate getting from point A to B the safest, with colour-coding for easy understanding for people who want to make biking a more frequent mode of transportation. New app helping Ottawa cyclists plan routes 'The premise behind it is to make sure that people can get around in the most comfortable manner. There might be other applications out there that will give you a route, but you don't know what kind of route it's going to be,' says Dave Robertson, a volunteer with Bike Ottawa. 'This app here ensures that you know what you're going to encounter. It's all color-coded, so it's always going to route you on the safest route, which is always green. Green is good.' The Cycling Guide isn't only for residents but also helps visitors with alternative routes, making it easier for them to tour the city. Robertson says most mainstream navigation apps don't account for safety or comfort for the rider. 'This app winds up removing a lot of those issues, a lot of those barriers that people face. You plug in your address or pick a point on the map and it's going to re-route you on the least stressful route,' says Robertson. 'It always gives you one or two other options too. If you're a stronger person riding a bike and you're okay with being in more car traffic, it's going to give you another option, which is slightly more stressful but it's going to get you there faster.' This year's launch will also make the app available in other Canadian cities. The free app is available to download for Android and iPhone users.

Alaska Airlines is launching Burbank routes to fill Avelo void
Alaska is the latest airline gunning to take up the void that Avelo Airlines will leave at Hollywood Burbank Airport. Alaska said Thursday that it will launch year-round, daily routes connecting Burbank with Eugene, Ore.; Redmond/Bend, Ore.; and Pasco, Wash. The flights commence Oct. 26 and will be operated with regional Embraer E175 planes. All three routes are currently served by discounter Avelo, which announced this month that it will pull out of Burbank on Dec. 2. Discount carrier Breeze plans to be fighting against Alaska for Avelo's market share, having announced its own service plans from Burbank to Eugene, Pasco and Bend, as well to Eureka, Calif., and Provo, Utah. Breeze is entering Burbank, but Alaska's there But Alaska will have the jump on Breeze. The Seattle-based airline already flies to five destinations from Burbank, while Breeze will be a new entrant to the airport. And Breeze's Burbank flights won't begin until March, several months after the new Alaska operations. The Burbank announcements are among seven newly planned routes Alaska unveiled Thursday connecting California to the northwest. The airline will also begin daily Ontario, Calif.-Boise, Idaho, service and daily Orange County-Spokane, Wash., service on Jan. 7. In addition, Alaska will fly winter seasonally between Santa Rosa, Calif., and Palm Springs five-times weekly beginning Oct. 26 and winter seasonally thrice-weekly between San Diego and the skiing destination of Sun Valley, Idaho, beginning Dec. 18. Alaska is scheduled to be the lone carrier flying between Ontario and Boise, Cirium flight schedule data shows. Alaska will also be the only carrier connecting San Diego with Sun Valley, and it will be alone on Santa Rosa-Palm Springs, replacing Avelo service that was discontinued in June. On Orange County-Spokane, Allegiant currently offers summer seasonal service.

Jet2 to scrap five new flights from UK airport before even launching
JET2 has announced that it is withdrawing five routes from Bournemouth that were due to launch next year. The airline only recently started flying from the airport back in February, after basing two aircraft there. 3 3 And it had planned to introduce a third aircraft at the airport next year as well. However, they have since confirmed that five of their new routes planned for summer 2026 will no longer go ahead. A Jet2 spokesperson said: "Following this latest review, we have taken the decision to withdraw services to Malaga, Dubrovnik, Jersey, Reus and Verona for Summer 26 from Bournemouth Airport. "Where customers are affected, we will contact them, and they will receive a full refund." Dubrovnik, Reus and Verona were all due to be exclusive destinations to the airline from Bournemouth Airport. And the third aircraft due to be based at the airport from 2026 was meant for the new summer flights to Malaga, Dubrovnik, Reus, Verona and Kos. The spokesperson also explained: "As a successful business, we are continually reviewing our flying programme and will adjust this where required. "This gives us the ability to add flights and holidays in response to demand, and very occasionally we may withdraw flights too." In February, the airline marked its inaugural flight from Bournemouth Airport - its 12th airport base. And according to its website, Jet2 flies to over 25 destinations from Bournemouth including Majorca, Ibiza and Corfu. The spokesperson continued: "With a fantastic programme of services on sale from Bournemouth Airport, customers still have a superb choice when it comes to enjoying a holiday." Family getaway with Jet2 to the serene beach town of Algor According to Travel Gossip, the airline is also believed to be scrapping flights between Edinburgh and Izmir, Turkey from October this year. Tickets for the route are now no longer on sale. The airline cancelled flights to Salerno, Italy, in March, from Manchester and Birmingham too, having only announced them six months prior. The flights - which were due to start this summer - were reportedly scrapped due to a "lack of bookings", according to local media. Salerno Airport also only opened last year, after closing back in 2016. After a £400million development, the airport is meant to create easier access to the Amalfi Coast and is expected to be fully operational by next year. New EU flight rules A RECENT change to a European travel rule means that British passengers will receive less compensation for flight delays. Previously, EU261 legislation, which the UK adopted post-Brexit, entitled passengers to compensation for delays of over three hours. Now, under new rules reviewed in Brussels, short-haul flights (under 3,500km) will only be eligible for compensation if delayed by four hours or more, an increase from the previous three-hour threshold. For longer flights (over 3,500km), the delay time for compensation has increased from four to six hours. The compensation amounts have also been reduced: for delays over four hours, it's now €300 instead of €400, and for delays over six hours on longer flights, it's €500 instead of €600. Despite opposition from some countries, the Council made this decision legally binding, bypassing the European Parliament. However, the European Parliament still has four months to propose changes to these new rules. If approved, the UK government is likely to adopt these changes into its own legislation. United and American add Mexico City routes
United and American have each announced new Mexico City routes for next winter. United will fly daily from Denver to Mexico's capital from Oct. 26 through March 27. The flight will compete with daily year-round service by Aeromexico and Mexican discounter Volaris. American, meanwhile, will connect Chicago O'Hare with Mexico City from Oct. 26 through March 28. The carrier will join a crowded market, which already includes service by United, Aeromexico, Volaris and Viva Aerobus. United has also announced a second daily Latin America route from Denver that will commence on Oct. 26. The service, between the Mile High City and Punta Cana, will be the westernmost route to the Dominican Republic, United said. United will fly Denver-Punta Cana year-round. Service will be daily until mid-August, then switch to Saturdays only until late October.

How You Can Turn a Traffic Jam Into a Backroad Adventure
For the longest time I believed that you should always stay on the highway during a traffic jam because taking alternate routes would simply slow you down. The conventional wisdom stipulated that the shortest route between two points was the route you were already on, so you should just grin and bear it. Resist the temptation to leave the highway because you'll either get lost or you'll end up in yet another traffic jam caused by all the other drivers who allowed GPS to redirect them.
