May 24 South Africa (Greyville) form analysis

Race 1 (1,200m) Many first-timers. Of those who have run, (4) DARK MATTER has gone close at both starts and was narrowly beaten over course and distance last time. Drawn well and should go close. (6) WINTER BLESSING has come on nicely at recent outings and should be competitive. (7) CASSANDRA got a cautious thumbs-up from her in-form stable and is one to watch in the betting. (2) MS SAKURA has a blue-blood pedigree but may need further. Race 2 (1,200m) Mostly first-timers. Of those who have run, (9) HAWKSDALE found some market support on debut and finished close-up. She takes on males but looks forward enough to take this race. (8) VANAKKAM was a modest second at her second start but has been entered for the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship. (1) GOLDEN OPERATOR has the best of the draws and comes from a strong stable. (13) ZIYAN'S PRIDE has the widest draw but does have some experience. Race 3 (1,400m) (2) RUN FOREST RUN made good improvement at his second start, running on strongly. The extra furlong will suit and from a good draw, he should put in another strong showing. Visiting (6) XENOPHON found market support on debut and showed up well. That experience will count in his favour and he will be a big runner. (4) BRUH was a distant fourth on debut but should come on from that and should enjoy the extra. (9) GOOD OMEN raced green on debut and should come on from that effort. Race 4 (1,800m) (6) DESTINY OF FIRE takes on males but has good form in useful female company of late. She goes well this trip and should be in the shake-up. (2) WORLD OF OUR OWN is back over a more suitable trip and with only 52.5kg to shoulder he should be a big runner. (3) ARVERNI KING was a smart second behind the promising Regulation last time. Richard Fourie replaces the apprentice rider. (14) JOHNNY THE THIEF has the worst of the draws but has been in good form of late and can feature. Race 5 (2,400m) (7) HOLDING THUMBS was making steady progress up the handicap before putting in a below-par effort in the Grade 3 WSB 1900. However, he did not get the best of passages and this step-up in trip will be more to his liking. (8) MARAUDING HORDE has consistent Highveld form over the trip and is a borderline case for a place in the Durban July. A win here will help his cause. (2) SHOOT THE RAPIDS was making late progress in the 1900 and will much prefer this trip. He has a big weight but looks capable. (4) FUTURE SWING was probably in need of his last effort. He shoulders top weight but is not out of it. Race 6 (2,000m) (9) GIVE ME EVERYTHING caught the eye when closing fast from a wide draw and the back of the field when a two-length fourth in the Grade 2 WSB Fillies Guineas. It snapped a four-race winning streak but the extra could see her back on track in the Grade 2 Woolavington. (6) BEATING WINGS carries top weight but has been in good form on the Highveld and finished third in this race last year. (8) REGENERATION is lightly raced and was a close-up fifth in the recent Grade 2 WSB Fillies Guineas. She will enjoy the step-up in trip and handy galloping weight. (7) MOCHA BLEND was possibly just in need of her last start when beaten by (10) MASCHERINA. She found good market support that day and is better off at the weights. Race 7 (2,000m) (7) EIGHT ON EIGHTEEN is sure to start deep in the red given his record winning the Grade 1 WSB Cape Met and the Grade 1 Cape Derby and his fast-finishing effort in the recent Grade 2 WSB Guineas. He is ideally suited to this trip and is the horse to beat. Mike and Mathew de Kock have avoided the Grade 2 Woolavington 2000 looking for a Grade 1 win with the filly (4) SPUMANTE DOLCE. She has shown her best form at recent outings and this trip will suit. (1) OKAVANGO was running on late in the Grade 3 WSB 1900. He looks to be up against it in this company but is still improving. (3) CONFEDERATE has not finished further back than second in his eight starts. He won his last two including the Grade 1 SA Classic. If he is ready after a three-month break, he should be right there. Race 8 (1,200m) (10) SOHOT SOWHAT was narrowly beaten by the useful Bevies Delight on this course last time. Title-chasing Gavin Lerena has jumped ship to ride (1) BOSUM BUDDY but weight could have been the decider. Bosum Buddy has the best of the draws backed up by some solid Highveld form. (2) MALCOLM'S DREAM is always dangerous and has dropped in the handicap. (4) WINGS WITHIN ME has not been far back at recent starts and should be competitive. Race 9 (1,200m) (5) DAPPER is a recent addition to the Duncan Howells yard. He was a well beaten third over a mile last run but does appear to be more at home over this shorter trip. (7) PHUTULICIOUS returns from a disappointing Cape trip and has a change of stable. His best recent form has been at Hollywoodbets Greyville and that past form with a drop in trip could see him make big improvement. (9) REAL WAR backed up on his maiden win with another narrow victory. He has been around the turn and can feature again. (8) HONOR OF KINGS is better than his last effort and shows some promise. Race 10 (1,200m) (2) VIRGIN RIVER has only once been out of the money in 13 starts but has been restricted to 1,000m. Greyville favours quick horses and she could handle the extra furlong. (7) GOLDEN MOMENT has consistent Highveld form and stays the trip. She should put in a good showing. (11) GETOFFOFMYCLOUD was a little disappointing on the Poly last run and can do better on the grass. (8) THERE SHE GOES has her 55th start but has been in good form of late. With a 4kg apprentice up, she has only 50kg on her back.

With a 2,631-mile route from remote Perth in Western Australia to Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach, the runner claims to have run at a pace of more than two marathons per day. Originally from Ampthill, Bedfordshire, 31-year-old William Goodge had already amassed an impressive résumé of long-distance runs around the world before taking on the dash down under. His highlights have included a run through The Sahara Desert, completing a marathon in every English county over a 30-day period, running the 104 miles around Lake Como in 24 hours, and crossing the 3,175 miles from Los Angeles to New York in just 55 days. In addition to ultramarathons and running across countries, William is also a male model signed by the prestigious Wilhemina agency, and previously played semi-professional rugby. However, his passion for long-distance runs was born through a personal tragedy. READ MORE WORLD RECORDS RUN IT BACK Female runner makes history as she becomes first to ever break marathon mark William first started training for marathons to cope with the loss of his mother to cancer in 2018. Now, he makes his record-breaking journeys in her honour, and to fundraise for the cause. 'I quickly found running was a way for me to deal with that emotional pain, and I took it to an extreme quite quickly after that,' he shared with The West Australian. 'When times get tough, which is quite frequent, I'll think of her and other people who are fighting for their lives who haven't chosen to be in that position. I've chosen to be in the position I'm in, so I feel like I don't have a valid excuse to stop.' The record-breaking run route William's run across Australia was no easy feat. Starting at Cottesloe Beach in Perth on April 15 and finishing along Bondi Beach on May 19, William's route brought him through the country's remote wilderness. Although he has a love for desert runs and celebrated his 31st birthday on this one, William told the BBC his first nine-days through Western and South Australia's desert - the Nullabor Plain - were especially challenging. "It was full-on from start to finish," he said. Throughout his journey, he faced painful experiences ranging from rotting feet and fallen-off toenails to bone aches and hallucinations from sleep deprivation. 'I wasn't sleeping at night and I had deep pain in my bones and things like hip flexors," William said to The Guardian. "Mentally I was tossing and turning throughout the night, hallucinating a little bit, which isn't that fun.' 3 Joined by his father, William Goodge placed a bouquet of lilies at the finish line on Bondi Beach for his late mother, who he lost to cancer in 2018 Credit: EPA After over a month of pushing his physical and mental strength to the limit, he met his father at the finish line in Bondi Beach and laid down a bouquet of lilies in honour of his mother. "I feel like I've turned what is pain into a powerful story, or the tagline I like to use is 'emotion equals energy'," he said in an interview with The West Australian. "If you can channel it towards something, and it doesn't have to be physical, it's a pretty full well from which to pull water and fuel." William also shared his warm-up for the journey with The West Australian: an over-500km run from Tokyo to Osaka in Japan. If his claim is verified by Guinness World Records, he'll have beaten the current record holder, Australia's very own Chris Turnbull, by a full four days.

Femminile to be ridden by Shinn

BRISBANE Trainer Phillip Stokes is doing everything in his power to ensure Group 1 winner Femminile gets the best chances in the A$1 million (S$832,000) Group 1 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm on May 31. The Pakenham trainer has engaged one of Australia's top hoops to take the reins on Femminile and he has received a commitment from Blake Shinn to ride the three-year-old daughter of Dundeel. The 2,400-metre event will be run four days after the recent winner of the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2,500m) is offered for the sale at the Magic Millions National Broodmare sale on May 27. Stokes said the bay filly, who will trial at Pakenham on May 20, presents a great opportunity for prospective buyers. "She's going through the sale a few days before, so the new buyers can have a runner in the Derby," said Stokes. "She'll have a reverse trial on Tuesday and then go up at the end of the week. She seems well." Femminile became the second filly in a row to upstage the boys in the South Australian Derby on May 3, after Coco Sun won the Adelaide classic in 2024. Femminile was then ridden by Lachlan Neindorf, who carried the OTI Racing colours to victory at Morphettville. 2008 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Shinn, who also bagged eight winners over two stints in Singapore in 2015 and 2022, will be chasing back-to-back Queensland Derbys in the same colours. in 2024, he partnered the OTI Racing Stable-owned Warmonger to a brilliant 10½ length-win. Femminile will be one of three Stokes-trained runners Shinn rides on May 31. He is also booked on Regal Azmon and Stay Focused. Stokes is keen to test the seven-year-old Regal Azmon beyond 1,600m after his barnstorming win in the Group 3 Cummings Stakes at Morphettville on May 10, with the Group 2 Lord Mayor's Cup (1,800m) on May 31 identified as a good option. "I thought he's in his career-best form, so we might as well have a crack at that," he said. "He's an older horse, but he's going as good as ever." The Queensland Derby is one of two Group 1 races to be run at the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival at Eagle Farm on May 31. The other highlight is the A$1 million Kingsford Smith Cup (1,300m). On May 24, the Group 1 spotlight will be shining on Doomben instead, with the clash of 2024 Australian Horse of the Year Pride Of Jenni and Queensland star Antino in the A$1 million Doomben Cup (2,000m) set to turn heads. After finishing last in the Group 1 Champions Mile (1,600m) at Flemington on Nov 9, 2024, Pride Of Jenni bled and was initally retired by her owners, but the Ciaron Maher-trained mare surprised many by coming out of retirement in early 2025. The seven-year-old daughter of Pride Of Dubai has since won twice from three starts, including the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1,800m) on March 15 and her last start in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1,600m) on May 3. Both races were run at Caulfield. Craig Newitt, who was her winning partner in the two races, will take the reins on Pride Of Jenni. Recent Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1,800m) winner Antino will be ridden by Shinn again. Then, given an astute ride by Shinn, the Tony Gollan-trained six-year-old dashed clear to win by 3½ lengths at Gold Coast on May 10. The Brisbane Racing Club will "shout the bar", or give a free round of beers to racegoers should favourite Pride Of Jenni or Antino wins the Doomben Cup. Meanwhile, Hong Kong's homegrown talent Matthew Poon has also earned a ride in the Doomben Cup on Klondike for trainers John O'Shea and Tom Charlton. The Galileo five-year-old last won the Group 3 Prix De Reux (2,500m) at Deauville in France last August, when under the care of William Haggas. "I was really surprised. I was very happy to get the opportunity because it is one of my career goals to ride in a Group 1 overseas, so I'm really keen on this opportunity and I really appreciate it," Poon told the Hong Kong Jockey Club. "I think this will be a really good experience to get rides, especially in a Group 1, in a different country." The 2015/16 South Australian champion apprentice's biggest career win was on Straight Arron in the Group 2 Chairman's Trophy (1,600m) at Sha Tin on March 30. SKY RACING WORLD

Sento running in Japan blends bathhouse culture and exercise. 4 places in Tokyo to try it

One way to get around and familiarise yourself with a new city when travelling is to explore it on foot. If you are a runner, you get to cover more ground. Fitting a long-distance run into a tight travel itinerary, however, can be a challenge – as is finding a place to shower and wash your clothes afterwards if your excursion takes you far from your hotel. 'I love to go for runs when I travel, but it's difficult to always pack my running gear in my luggage,' says Tom Feng, a 34-year-old Hongkonger who has been running as a hobby for years. 'I usually only get to run near my hotel, so it feels quite limited, even though I always try to book hotels near popular local running spots.' In Japan, there is a unique, and cultural, solution to this problem: 'sento running'.

Swanson and Suzuki homer as the Cubs beat the Marlins 5-2

CHICAGO (AP) — Dansby Swanson and Seiya Suzuki homered in the fifth inning to help the Chicago Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Monday night. Miguel Amaya went 3 for 3 for Chicago, and Kyle Tucker hit an RBI triple. The NL Central leaders had dropped four of five. Cubs right-hander Colin Rea (3-0) allowed two runs and six hits in a season-high 6 2/3 innings. Rea was replaced by Daniel Palencia after Derek Hill hit a two-run homer for Miami. Palencia got four outs before Drew Pomeranz handled the ninth for his first save since 2020. Last-place Miami lost for the 12th time in 15 games. Marlins right-hander Cal Quantrill (2-4) was charged with three runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings. The Cubs grabbed control in the fifth. Nico Hoerner singled and scored on Swanson's ninth homer, a drive to left-center. Tucker tripled home Amaya and Suzuki followed with his 10th homer against Anthony Veneziano. Hill returned on Monday after missing 22 games with a left wrist sprain. Key moment Miami put a runner on with two out in the ninth when Connor Norby reached on a pinch-hit single. But Pomeranz struck out Hill looking. Key stat The Cubs entered with an NL-leading 233 runs, but they had scored two or fewer runs in four of their previous seven games. Up next Miami RHP Valente Bellozo (0-2, 3.50 ERA) faces Chicago RHP Ben Brown (3-3, 4.95 ERA) on Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:
