St. Dom's board ends effort to keep Auburn high school open for another year
May 31—AUBURN — Stymied by funding challenges and the cost of education, the board created to save St. Dominic Academy's high school from closure announced Friday evening it was ending its effort to keep the school open for the 2025-26 year. "This is not the end of the story, but it is the end of this chapter, unfortunately," reads a Facebook post made Friday night on the school's account. "(Saint Dominic Regional High School) will not be opening a private Catholic high school for the 2025-2026 school year. "While we had hoped early on that we could have been able to negotiate an affordable lease for the Auburn campus, the Board of Directors has spent significant time reviewing a budget to operate at Holy Family school with Prince of Peace Parish. We determined that the projected fundraising and tuition revenue presents too much of a risk to maintain solvency for the entire year, and we cannot do that to families or our beloved educators." The board was created soon after the Diocese of Portland announced in March that it was closing the high school at the end of the school year, citing low enrollment and operating losses going back several years. Members of the board and supporters first tried to work with the diocese to keep the high school campus in Auburn operating for a "bridge year" to allow the board the time to raise the funds and create the operating structure needed to take the school over as a private Catholic high school. When that effort failed, the board explored the possibility of opening the high school at a different location, with the Prince of Peace Parish in Lewiston agreeing to potentially accommodate St. Dom's at Holy Family School. "Everyone on the board understands and shares in the hurt and sadness that comes with this decision. The board will be taking the next week off to grieve with, and to be here, for the community. We will be reconvening to determine the next best steps to secure the future of Catholic secondary education and the Auburn campus. For the broader community, please join us in praying for peace for those impacted by the decisions of the last two months," the post read. The high school held graduation for its class of 2025 on May 23. This story will be updated. Copy the Story Link

UPDATE: APS cancels last day at Ellis, IJ over 'potential safety concern;' AHS graduation unaffected
May 30—Due to what was termed as a "potential safety concern," at Ellis Middle School, the Austin Public Schools District has made the decision to cancel the last day of school for both Ellis Middle School and IJ Holton Intermediate School. In a letter to district parents, Superintendent Dr. Joey Page made the announcement early Friday morning. "Due to the timing of this report and our need to fully assess the situation, we have made the decision to cancel the last day of school for Ellis Middle School students," Page explained in the letter. "Additionally, IJ Holton, due to its close proximity to Ellis, will also be closed to students." Citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Page said he was unable to go into details regarding the situation saying only that the district was working with law enforcement to investigate the threat's nature and that it is "taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our community." "All threats of violence — even those made in jest — are taken seriously and may result in student discipline, including possible expulsion and involvement of law enforcement," Page's letter said. However, later in the day on Friday, Page confirmed that the report of a possible safety threat had come in late Thursday evening. Austin Police Chief David McKichan confirmed that the district had reached out to the Austin Police Department, which continues to look into the threat. "Austin Public Schools received information about a potential safety concern involving students at Ellis Middle School. They did contact us to investigate, and that investigation is ongoing," McKichan said in a statement. "We do have two School Resource Officers (SRO) assigned to the school district. One of those is dedicated to the Ellis/IJH joint campus and is assigned this case. The other SRO, and any of our other staff, would of course assist as needed." Page has said that this incident had no bearing on Austin High School's commencement which took place as planned Friday night. The letter ended with Page urging parents or their students that if they hear of any threats to call 911 to report it.

Public hearing takes place to discuss possible closing of elementary school in Beaufort County
CHOCOWINITY, N.C. (WNCT) — A public hearing discussing the possible closure of Snowden Elementary School took place at Southside High School Thursday night, May 29, 2025. Members of the school board welcomed the community to hear their thoughts and opinions on the closure's impact. They spoke about student safety, lack of convenience and of what losing the school would mean. One message that was clear from both board members and people in the community was that solutions are needed. Concerns started with the meeting's location as some people said it was too far from the people in Aurora for them to voice their concerns. Beaufort County Schools Superintendent Dr. Matthew Cheeseman said he's grateful for the people who did voice their opinions. 'It's exciting to hear from all these people,' he said. 'We're working on transportation solutions but also enjoyed hearing the support for our strong teachers.' Some parents and other community members remain unhappy with the possibility of the school's closure. If the school does close, Beaufort County Schools would save $1.76 million, according to the recommended budget from Beaufort County Manager Brian Alligood. 'This is a long-term issue, we are seeing less people in Beaufort County,' Dr. Cheeseman said. The board will make a decision Tuesday, June 3rd, but leadership said they are looking at solutions to the problem for both possible outcomes. 'Leave it to the board to have dialogue with each other and approach both possible outcomes,' Dr. Cheeseman said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘Stay at home' warning issued to Brits over ‘incredibly infectious' virus that forced school to shut after outbreak
A 'STAY AT HOME' warning has been issued to Brits, after an infectious virus caused a school to shut down. Three children at a primary school in Hampshire were hospitalised after contracting the virus last week, with the school forced to partially close on Friday. 3 3 The children - along with four other pupils in the same class, who were not sick enough to go to hospital - had contracted norovirus, an "incredibly infectious virus" that can be spread for 48 hours after symptoms stop. Following the outbreak, at Compton All Saints Church of England Primary School, near Winchester, the Government has issued a 'stay at home' warning to anyone who has contracted the virus. The UK Health Security Agency said: "Norovirus is incredibly infectious, so if you're feeling unwell stay home for 48 hours after symptoms stop as you are still infectious during this time." The 120-pupil school revealed that he UKHSA had advised them to isolate the class with the outbreak from the rest of the school. However, since this was "logistically impossible", Compton All Saints was forced to close the class. The school was then subject to a deep clean, as the children broke up from school for the half term break. Cases of norovirus - which is known as the winter vomiting bug - are above average for this time of year. The last UKHSA report revealed that cases were more than double the five season average, with a total of 14,959 laboratory reports between March 31 and April 27, compared to the average of 6,446. What is norovirus? Norovirus is an incredibly contagious stomach bug, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as a high temperature, headaches, stomach ache and body aches. It spreads very easily between people, and symptoms strike within hours or days of infection. The virus is spread through being in close contact with someone with the illness, or touching infected surfaces and then touching your mouth. What are the norovirus symptoms and how long does the winter vomiting bug last? It can also spread through eating food that has been handled by someone who has norovirus, or drinking unclean water. When you have norovirus, you shed billions of tiny particles, that can only be seen with a mircoscope. It takes just a few norovirus particles to make people infected and sick. Norovirus: Key symptoms + how to protect yourself The main symptoms or norovirus, according to the NHS, are: Feeling sick (nausea) Diarrhoea Being sick (vomiting) You may also have: A high temperature A headache Aching arms and legs You can usually treat norovirus at home - the most important thing to do is rest and have lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. As norovirus is easily spread it's important to do what you can to prevent catching it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends four things you can do to protect yourself. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially: After using the toilet or changing nappies Before eating, preparing, or handling food Before giving yourself or someone else medicine It's important to be aware hand sanitisers don't always work well against norovirus. You can use them in addition to hand washing, but it shouldn't be a substitution. Before preparing and eating your food the CDC recommends the following: Carefully wash fruits and vegetables well Cook oysters and other shellfish thoroughly to an internal temperature of at least 63°C Routinely clean and sanitise kitchen utensils, cutting boards, counters, and surfaces, especially after handling shellfish Keep raw oysters away from ready-to-eat food in your shopping basket, refrigerator, and on cutting boards Throw away food that might contain norovirus Noroviruses are relatively resistant to heat and can survive temperatures as high as 63°C. Quick steaming processes will not heat foods enough to kill noroviruses. And be aware food contaminated with norovirus may look, smell, or taste normal. After someone with norovirus vomits and has diarrhoea you should: Wear rubber or disposable gloves and wipe the entire area with paper towels and throw them in a plastic trash bag Disinfect the area as directed on the product label Leave bleach disinfectant on the affected area for at least five minutes Clean the entire area again with soap and hot water Wash laundry, take out the trash, and wash your hands An expert recently warned norovirus can spread via clothes. Immediately remove and wash clothes or linens that may have vomit or poo on them. When you do this: Wear rubber or disposable gloves Handle items carefully without shaking them Wash the items with detergent and hot water at the maximum available cycle length and then machine dry them at the highest heat setting Wash your hands after with soap and water Because of this, the bug can spread rapidly through hospitals, making patients, staff and visitors ill. The NHS advise for people who have contracted the virus is: "Stay off school or work until you have not been sick or had diarrhoea for at least two days. "This is when you're most infectious. "Do not visit hospitals or care homes during this time." Most people start to recover from the virus in two to three days. However, in some cases, it can linger for weeks or even months. Brits are advised to call 111 if vomiting hasn't stopped after two days, or diarrhoea hasn't stopped after seven days. 3
