Mexico seizes 42 tonnes of meth in major drug lab raids amid US pressure

MEXICO CITY, June 10 — Mexico announced Monday the seizure of nearly 42 metric tonnes of methamphetamine worth more than US$50 million (RM212 million) during raids on illegal drug labs. The discovery, one of the biggest yet, comes as the Latin American nation faces mounting pressure from US President Donald Trump to curb drug trafficking. The seizures were conducted after personnel found five properties used as clandestine laboratories in the western state of Michoacan, a government statement said. The seizure represented a loss of 1.06 billion pesos (US$55.7 million) to the traffickers, it estimated. Drums containing around 8,800 litres of chemical precursors were also seized along with other drug production materials, it said. Mexico has showcased a series of major drug discoveries in an apparent attempt to highlight increased efforts to combat drug smuggling. Trump has cited trafficking of illegal drugs — particularly the synthetic opioid fentanyl — as one of the reasons for the tariffs he has imposed on imports from Mexico. In October, the Mexican navy announced that it had seized more than 8.3 tonnes of drugs found in vessels off the Pacific coast — a record for a single operation at sea. According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, Mexican criminal groups are the main suppliers of methamphetamine to the United States, using chemicals that are mostly sourced from China. In April last year, the head of Mexico's criminal investigation agency described the country as the 'champion' of production of synthetic drugs including methamphetamine. The illicit activity had been 'the source of the greatest wealth and power' for Mexican criminal organisations, Felipe de Jesus Gallo said. He later withdrew his remarks and apologized after the government objected. — AFP

"Thankfully, the operation went as well as it possibly could have, but recovery was tough."After surgery, Hayley was unable to feed or change Oliver for several weeks. She was also unable to drive for 12 months and needed to be accompanied in case of further seizures."I felt like I'd missed the start of Oliver's life," said Hayley, whose son is now two years old."I was grieving that lost time while trying to heal physically and emotionally." Ashley McWilliams, from Brain Tumour Research, said: "Hayley's story is a powerful reminder of how brain tumours can go unnoticed for years and present with very sudden symptoms."According to the charity, brain tumours can affect people of all are responsible for more deaths of patients aged under 40 than any other form of 12,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour - of which there are more than 100 different types - each number of diagnoses has increased by 11% during the last decade. Penang customs seizes vape devices, liquid worth RM5.17mil

State customs director Rohaizad Ali said this marked the first vape-related seizure in Penang this year that had led to arrests. (Bernama pic) BUTTERWORTH : The Penang customs department seized 86,086 electronic cigarette or vape devices and 996.5 litres of vape liquid worth RM5.17 million, including taxes, in two separate raids in April. State customs director Rohaizad Ali said the raids, at the North Butterworth container terminal (NBCT) and Port Klang, also led to the arrests of three men, including a Chinese national. He said the first raid took place at 1.15pm on April 3, when the enforcement division's operations unit inspected a container that had arrived at NBCT from China. 'The inspection uncovered 14,200 units of electronic cigarette devices and 210 bottles of vape liquid that were undeclared during import, alongside other merchandise. The total estimated value of the goods was RM1.33 million, with duties amounting to RM205,400. 'A local man acting as an agent and a Chinese national who claimed to be the exporter were arrested. This marks the first vape-related seizure in Penang this year that has led to arrests,' he said in a press conference at the Bagan Jermal enforcement storage facility today. Rohaizad said the inspection found that the container had been declared as carrying plastic goods, but the vape devices and liquid were hidden among other items and not declared. In a separate raid at 11am on April 10, authorities seized 71,886 electronic cigarette devices and 786.5 litres of vape liquid worth RM3.64 million, including taxes, following the inspection of another container from China, this time at Port Klang. A local man in his 40s who acted as an agent was arrested in connection with the case. 'The container was declared to contain belts and wallets, but the inspection uncovered undeclared vape devices and liquids mixed with the declared items,' he said. Further investigations are ongoing for both cases under Section 133(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967.

MACC seizes Ilham Tower again after getting approval linked to Daim's family assets

KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today said it has received approval to seize Ilham Tower again. In a statement issued today, the anti-graft agency said it will now confiscate the property — a prominent corporate tower in Kuala Lumpur linked to the late Tun Daim Zainuddin. 'This seizure is based on a Notice of Seizure of Immovable Property under Section 51(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001) dated June 4, 2025,' read the statement. The MACC said the seizure was approved under Section 376(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593). It added that a deputy public prosecutor confirmed that information provided by the MACC shows the building is linked to an offence under subsection 4(1) of the AMLATFPUAA 2001. This is the second time Ilham Tower has been seized by the MACC. The first seizure took place on December 18, 2023, after Daim failed to declare his family's financial assets as requested by the MACC. Ilham Tower is a 60-storey skyscraper in central Kuala Lumpur and is owned by Ilham Tower Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary controlled by Daim's widow, Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, and their two sons.
