Halifax police warn seniors of increased scams using AI
A courier who allegedly picked up money from the victim of a recent scam in Halifax is pictured. Halifax Regional Police are responding to increased scams targeting seniors and warning about the methods criminals use to build trust with victims. Five seniors have reported being scammed in the last week, said a Friday news release. Police said scammers are impersonating loved ones when they contact their targets and claiming they have been arrested. A second person, claiming to be a legal representative tells the victim they need to pay to have their loved one released from custody. Criminals are using artificial intelligence to clone a loved one's voice in recent incidents, said the release. Police said court officials in Canada do not collect bail money from residences and anyone receiving a call like this should hang up the phone without providing personal information. courier and vehicle A courier who allegedly picked up money from the victim of a recent scam in Halifax is pictured beside their vehicle. Cuts in produce vouchers to affect low-income seniors
LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Thousands of seniors statewide will soon be feeling the effects of federal budget cuts. This time the cuts take aim at a program that helps low-income seniors get fresh produce. Each summer, the senior farmers market nutrition program helps thousands of low-income seniors across the state. Lackawanna County rating drops one point above junk bond But cuts to the program are limiting the number of vouchers the program can give out. In Lackawanna County alone, 38,000 farmers market vouchers were requested by the county's agency on aging, the agency in charge of distributing them. But because of cuts to federal spending, they'll only be getting around 29,000. 'It really helps in your savings, but you want to help the farmer more-so than anything else,' said Denise Mehl, Scranton. Under the State Department of Agriculture program, residents over 60 who fall within the program's income requirements are eligible to receive up to five $5 vouchers each to spend at local farmers markets. Denise Mehl visits the Scranton farmers market regularly, and while not crucial to her budget, she says the vouchers help a lot. More than anything though, she worries about the farmers, about 1,000 farms participate in the program state-wide. 'If we didn't have them we wouldn't have anything,' voiced Mehl. According to the state department of agriculture, residents in Lackawanna County used these vouchers at a higher rate than any other county last year, over 90% of them were redeemed. 'It hurts people. It hurts the people that we serve here in Lackawanna County, those who need the help the most, and I just think that is really inhumane that they've done this,' expressed Bill Gaughan, county commissioner, Lackawanna County. State officials say the Trump administration has only released part of the funding congress approved, forcing agencies to slash their distribution by more than 25%. We reached out to GOP Congressman Rob Bresnahan for comment on the issue. He responded in-part: 'The recent decision to reduce benefits for the farmers market vouchers for seniors program was made at the state level. While I do not control those decisions, I am actively working at the federal level on a bipartisan bill to expand local food purchasing from our farmers to support those most in need. I look forward to announcing that legislation in the coming weeks.' Rep. Bresnahan Bresnahan says he and his team will be in contact with the Lackawanna County Agency on Aging to help ensure they receive the full funding and support they need for the program. Are workplaces in Malaysia ready to welcome older workers?
Feel strongly about these letters, or any other aspects of the news? Share your views by emailing us your Letter to the Editor at letters@ or filling in this Google form . Submissions should not exceed 400 words, and must include your full name and address, plus a phone number for verification I refer to the article , 'Malaysians slam plan to raise civil servant retirement age to 65: 'let them rest'' (May 21). In Malaysia, the retirement age for civil servants and private-sector employees has been adjusted several times. In 1951, the mandatory retirement age was set at 55 years. It was raised to 56 in 2001, 58 in 2008, then 60 in 2012. Now there is a suggestion to raise it to 65 – a substantial leap. While some argue that such a move would allow experienced workers to remain in the workforce, there are also concerns about the declining physical and cognitive abilities of older people and the potential accident risks this brings. Raising the retirement age could contribute to an increase in workplace and traffic accidents. Age-related changes such as weakened muscles, joint stiffness, reduced agility and decreased stamina can make it harder for seniors to perform tasks safely in industrial settings. Balancing problems resulting in falls are also a significant cause of injury to older adults. Many seniors also experience chronic health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, which can affect their ability to perform work safely. At the same time, cognitive decline could affect their decision-making and reaction time.
