Russian strike kills 12 Ukrainian soldiers near front line amid peace talks uncertainty
At least 12 Ukrainian service members were killed and more than 60 were injured in a Russian missile strike on the location of a Ukrainian army training unit on Sunday, according to a statement from the Ukrainian Ground Forces. Advertisement The strike occurred at 12.50pm, the statement said, emphasising that no formations or mass gatherings of personnel were being held at the time. An investigative commission was created to uncover the circumstances around the attack that led to such a loss in personnel, the statement said. The training unit is located to the rear of the 1,000km active front line, where Russian reconnaissance and strike drones are able to strike. Ukraine's forces suffer from manpower shortages and take extra precautions to avoid mass gatherings, as the skies across the front line are saturated with Russian drones looking for targets. 'If it is established that the actions or inaction of officials led to the death or injury of servicemen, those responsible will be held strictly accountable,' the Ukrainian Ground Forces' statement said. Veterans, families gather in Fort Lauderdale to honor fallen on Memorial Day
Dozens of South Floridians gathered Monday at Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery to pay tribute to the countless service members who lost their lives in service to the United States. The Memorial Day ceremony, hosted by the City of Fort Lauderdale, was marked by solemn remembrance, heartfelt stories and gratitude from those who served and those who remember. Honoring generations of service Among the attendees was 104-year-old World War II veteran Donald "Buster" Dennis, who served in the U.S. Navy. "I'm happy to be here," Dennis said. His daughter, Shari Johnson, stood by his side, thankful that her father made it home—unlike so many others. "I'm glad my dad made it through. It just makes me appreciate the people who gave their life, but he came home or I wouldn't be here," Johnson said. John Blandin, an Air Force veteran, said remembering those who sacrificed everything is fundamental to the nation's identity. "It means everything because it's the basis of our country's existence," Blandin said. Memories of war and messages of gratitude Gail Jennings, a flight attendant during the Vietnam War, reflected on her time flying troops to and from their R&R breaks. For her service, she was awarded the rank of second lieutenant in the Air Force. "Vietnam was a horrible war and when I was flying we would take them to their R&R and going out was really fun because I made it fun," Jennings said. "Coming back, I would sit in the galley and listen to their stories—all these 18-year-olds. They knew they weren't coming back, and most of them didn't come back." Tonia Riley and her father spent the day honoring her brother Dexter, an Air Force veteran and former Davie police officer who died in a traffic accident. "This is a work that's done with love and supreme dedication and we really just couldn't be here without them," Riley said. For Riley, the ceremony was more than just tradition—it was a powerful reminder of the human cost of freedom. "I think it really commemorates all the love and support that we have for our veterans," she said.

Fallen service members recognized at 58th annual Memorial Day Ceremony in Baltimore County
Ten fallen service members were honored at the 58th annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium. Each name was announced one by one on Monday, with special attention given to those who died while on duty within the past year. "No matter how many years pass, the weight of this day never lessens," said Maryland Congressman Johnny Olszewski. "The importance of us gathering never grows thin, and because of that, the names of our heroes will never be forgotten." There were a few service members mentioned at the beginning of the ceremony who recently passed and will be honored at the 2026 Memorial Day Ceremony. "He lived and he loved" SPC Jacob Mullen, at 25 years old, was killed in January. "It was just really nice to know that even people who have never met him or never heard of him now do know him and have heard of him," said Gold Star mom Linda Mullen. Even though this Memorial Day was difficult for the Mullen family, Linda Mullen said it's important that her son's memory is kept alive. "He lived and he loved with his whole heart," Linda Mullen said. "So that's my new motto: to love like Jacob did. And to make sure that everybody that I know and I love knows that I love them because he did that." "He wanted to die a hero" PFC Charles Hyman, another service member honored, died in June 2024, at the age of 33. Hyman's mother, Carline, said he was a natural-born leader and gave his all to defending America, even though he was born in Jamaica. "He always said he wanted to die a hero," Carline Hyman said. "He said, 'I want to do something amazing that where people will look back and say, 'Charles Hyman did this,'" Remembering the purpose of Memorial Day Mothers of the fallen service members ask that while people are enjoying Memorial Day that they think of those who lost their lives. Maj. Gen. Janeen Birckhead, with the Maryland National Guard, said it's important to value our freedom in memory of those who fought for it. "Let's strive every day to be worthy of their sacrifice. God bless our fallen heroes, God bless the USA," Birckhead said.
