Underground blast near sewer startles Bukit Minyak residents, no injuries reported, says Penang Fire Dept

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 7 — People in the Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak area were startled today by an underground explosion near a sewer line, which released smoke into the air. Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of Operations, John Sagun Francis, said an emergency call was received at 2.46 pm, and a team was immediately dispatched to the scene. 'Upon arrival, firefighters found that the explosion had occurred near a sewer line and detected a gas odour at the site. Witnesses also reported seeing smoke. Firefighters conducted a size-up and measured the surrounding air quality, including pH levels,' he said in a statement today. The operation was supported by the Hazardous Materials unit from the Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Station. Tests showed that the pH level of the liquid in the sewer was neutral. Further checks confirmed that the sewer line belongs to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), and the company has been notified to take further action. The operation concluded at 4.38 pm, and no injuries were reported. — Bernama

‘A mess': Jacksonville's Arlington neighbors wary of expected Merrill Road closures

For Jacksonville's Arlington residents, Merrill Road already presents its fair share of traffic headaches. 'You got the O'Reilly's, the auto place … you got the Waffle House … you've got pizza place, you've got Wendy's, so it's already busy with the drive-thru traffic and stuff like that,' Arlington neighbor Roslyn Ross told Action News Jax Sunday. Now, from Monday, June 2, until August, that busy road will be restricted to just two lanes, with JEA set to begin work replacing the sewer in order to make way for a new pump station in the area. Construction will begin by first closing the eastbound lanes and detouring traffic through the westbound lanes. Once work on that section is complete, the closure and detour will shift to the westbound lanes. Neighbors Action News Jax spoke to Sunday morning are wary about the traffic backups the project may bring. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] 'My [house's] back faces where the Wendy's is and all, and I hear lots of stuff going on just right there,' Ross said. 'So I can imagine I'm going to hear many accidents, many more accidents, I guess I should say. I just don't think it's a smart thing to do.' Another concern by neighbors Action News Jax spoke to off of Merrill Road: that the project will push even more cars onto their neighborhood streets, where they say cars already come flying through on a regular basis. 'It's gonna be much more worse,' an Arlington neighbor named David told Action News Jax. 'You know, now we're gonna have traffic here. They cut to that side, cut to that side, and it's gonna just make this neighborhood a mess.' However, in the end, Ross said she just hopes the project's benefits are worth the temporary headaches, with flooding a major problem in their neighborhood streets. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] 'We do have a lot of storm flooding up here because the things get blocked,' Ross said. 'I don't even know what they're called, where the water goes down, so hopefully that will help. I hope the end justifies the means.' JEA said of the project, 'JEA is working to minimize impact on commuters and the Arlington neighborhood. We appreciate customers' patience as we work to upgrade our pump station and accommodate future growth in the area.' Thames Water flood 'caused £13k damage to Reading community hub'

A community hub said it had spent more than £13,000 after sewer water seeped up through its basement damaging items including laptops and art materials. Nancy Magon, who runs The Hub by Aurora Family in Reading, said: "It decimated our business, we're crawling back now."The basement the non-profit education support group usually uses as a classroom and for various workshops was flooded with 12 inches (30cm) of sewer water in September, Ms Magon said. Thames Water apologised and said "investigations are complete and a claim for Ms Magon is currently being reviewed by our loss adjusters who will update her on the outcome as soon as possible". Ms Magon said Thames Water removed 40m (131ft) of scale from the drain which took place four months after the flooding and took a week to finish. During that time the basement could not be Magon said the group was in "complete limbo" and had to rent another space which meant spending money on two properties at the same time. Rachel Lockett's daughter, who has autism, attended the The Hub by Aurora Family when she was unable to attend said it enabled her to "flourish"."Getting out of the house and being able to trust in other adults... was a real key for reducing her anxiety and enabling her to get back out there again," she said."It was life-changing having an activity she felt safe doing because school became so traumatic for her that she used to be terrified to go anywhere." Although Ms Magon had contents and business interruption insurance she said her insurers advised her to put the claim forward to Thames Water before putting in a claim "which would significantly increase our premiums". A Thames Water spokesperson said: "We're very sorry that the Aurora Family Hub experienced internal sewer flooding, and we recognise the disruption this can cause to business."
