Rosemead woman's home posted on fake rental scam listing, bringing strangers to her front door
A homeowner in Rosemead said strangers continue showing up at her front door after a scammer listed her home for rent on a popular travel website. Alexis Cavish said her home was posted on a fake rental listing on Although the address is correct, the photos included in the post were not of her home. 'We found out our house was listed on and we are not renting out our house on so we had some people come show up at our house thinking they had rented our home,' she said. Cavish said, not only has she never rented out her home, she doesn't even have an account with However, within the last 24 hours, two sets of strangers arrived at her front door, showing her an email confirmation that they had booked her home as a short-term rental through the website. She had to turn them away. 'Luckily, so far, the people [who have shown up] have been really nice,' Cavish said. 'But they're strangers coming to the house where I have kids, I have a playground and I don't like the idea of strangers coming to my house.' Her home was listed by the scammer for nearly $400 a night. Cavish said she's stunned as to how this mix-up could even happen. 'I'm frustrated because the company is clearly not doing its due diligence,' she said. 'Why doesn't the owner have to prove some ownership before being able to charge people money to stay?' David Lazarus, KTLA's consumer specialist, said similar rental scams are becoming increasingly popular. 'It's a common enough scam that there's a name for it — short-term rental scams — and it's most common on Airbnb and Lazarus explained. Oftentimes, many rental or vacation sites have automated listing procedures, which means no humans are actually checking or verifying the postings. He said the safest thing to do when renting a place online is to ensure that all payments are made on the site itself and not through a third-party payment app. 'Stay on the site,' Lazarus said. 'In terms of any payment, any communication, don't leave the platform. So, if the listing says they want you to pay with Zelle or Venmo or some other digital payment plan, and especially if they ask for crypto, walk away.' Lazarus said another way to protect yourself is, when provided with the home's address after booking, search the address on Google Maps to make sure the home matches the rental listing photos and description. Airbnb launch new original ‘experiences' and ‘services' as part of the platform's app expansion
Short-term rental booking giant Airbnb has announced sweeping changes to its platform, with the $84 billion company intent on becoming a one-stop shop for a traveller's wants and needs. On Tuesday, the company's cofounder Brian Chesky announced that the new offerings to the platform — including 'Services' and 'Originals' — would help bolster the company for the future of travel and strengthen its appeal against the increasingly fierce competition with hotels. Unveiling the new aspects of the app in Los Angeles, Mr Chesky said Airbnb Services — which essentially allows people to hire on-site professionals, such as chefs, hairdressers and personal trainers direct from the app — will allow an Airbnb property to become more of a 'hotel' in nature. Speaking to Business Insider, Dave Stephenson — Airbnb's chief business officer — said the beauty of 'Services' means that people can combine the appeal of a short-term rental with amenities typically offered by a hotel. 'People choose Airbnb often because of their location and amenities, but our amenities usually are maybe more space, more bedrooms, maybe a washer-dryer,' he said. 'But then there are still things that we don't provide that a hotel does.' Airbnb said that services are available in 260 cities, including some services in Sydney — such as a personal trainer in Bondi — and even in Melbourne, and that many start below $50. 'Originals' on the other hand, is marketed at travellers who want the ultimate in travel experiences. Dubbed as 'extraordinary experiences hosted by the world's most interesting people', these curated 'originals' include learning pastry-making at the renowned French Bastards bakery with chef Raphaelle Elbaz, or playing beach volleyball with Olympian Carol Solberg on Rio's iconic Leblon Beach. And if you're a celebrity-lover, some of the selections named so far include hanging out on the Short n' Sweet tour set with Sabrina Carpenter, creating an anime alter-ego with Megan Thee Stallion and throwing a ball with NFL star Patrick Mahomes. The announcement of 'Originals' and 'Services', which will be available as part of the reimagined app from today, follows the success of ventures like the Barbie Malibu DreamHouse and Bluey's House in Queensland. Last year, the short-stay giant introduced a permanent category called 'Icons,' which featured exclusive stays in partnership with brands and celebrities that promise unforgettable experiences. One of those was Pixar's UP house, which was a home suspended over the New Mexico desert by a giant crane. Other 'Icon' listings included a two-dimensional replica of the mansion from the 'X-Men '97' cartoon, a stay at the Ferrari Museum in Italy and the Minneapolis house immortalised in Prince's 'Purple Rain.'

Hospitable report: 75% of STR hosts say personalization is their edge over traditional PMCs
New Hospitable report reveals hosts are confidently competing with larger operators – and aren't interested in handing over control. SAN FRANCISCO – A brand new report from property management software Hospitable reveals that independent short-term rental (STR) hosts are feeling confident in their ability to compete – and clear on what gives them an edge. 'The Evolving STR Landscape: Insights for Hosts & Property Managers' draws on a survey of 566 STR professionals, including self-managing hosts, co-hosts, and property managers. Among the findings: nearly half (47.7%) of hosts say large property management companies (PMCs) have no impact on their ability to attract bookings, and just 10.4% believe PMCs dominate their local markets. Although 65.4% have noticed an uptick in competition, most aren't concerned. Rather than stepping back, hosts are leaning into what sets them apart – personalization. Three-quarters (74.8%) say offering a more personalized guest experience is their biggest competitive advantage over PMCs, while 72% cite attention to detail as a key differentiator. Many also point to direct guest relationships (60.3%) and pricing flexibility (48.8%) as core strengths. While the majority of hosts remain committed to self-management, many aren't opposed to outside support — as long as it adds clear value. 38.3% say they would consider working with a PMC if it improved marketing and visibility, while others would welcome help with saving time (29.7%), scaling their portfolio (28.5%), or streamlining operations such as cleaning, guest communication, and tech tools. Pierre-Camille Hamana, CEO of Hospitable, said: 'The findings from this report highlight a new level of confidence among independent hosts. They're not looking for someone to take over, they're looking for tools and strategies that strengthen what they already do well. Hosts know that personalization, direct guest contact, and control over their business are what make them competitive, and they're leaning into this more than ever before.' Looking ahead, independent hosts remain optimistic about their growth prospects. Over half (56.7%) of hosts plan to expand their portfolios in 2025, signaling strong confidence in the future of the STR market.
