From Riyadh to Beijing The Five Biggest Automotive Headlines of the Week

We're back with our weekly roundup of the most impactful developments across the automotive industry—from cutting-edge launches and exclusive test drives to major strategic moves shaping the future of mobility. This week, Riyadh marks a historic milestone in smart transport, Xiaomi makes a bold debut in the EV segment, and global headlines swirl around Tesla, Bentley, and a politically charged trade deal. Here's what you need to know. Saudi Arabia Launches Pilot Program for Self-Driving Taxis In a regional first, Saudi Arabia's General Transport Authority has launched a pilot phase for autonomous taxis in Riyadh, with the participation of the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser. The 12-month trial includes 13 electric charging stations spread across seven strategic locations in the capital. While the vehicles operate autonomously, safety drivers are present during the initial phase. With a top speed of 100 km/h, the initiative reflects Saudi Arabia's strategic push toward innovative, sustainable mobility solutions. Xiaomi Enters the EV Arena with a Powerful Debut Drive of the YU7 Arab GT was granted exclusive access to test the all-new Xiaomi YU7, the luxury electric SUV that marks the tech giant's ambitious leap into the automotive world. Our colleague Ahmed Abu Jameel tested the 'Max' variant—the most powerful version—equipped with dual electric motors delivering a combined output of 673 horsepower and 866 Nm of torque. The YU7 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.23 seconds. With such performance and refinement, Xiaomi signals it's not here to experiment—it's here to compete. Tesla's 'New' Affordable Car Is Just a Cheaper Model Y After months of speculation, Tesla has confirmed that its anticipated affordable EV isn't an all-new model but a lower-priced version of the existing Model Y. During the Q2 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk stated, 'It's simply the Model Y,' reaffirming the company's current focus on optimizing existing platforms instead of introducing new nameplates. While this strategy could offer short-term relief amid slowing sales, it raises critical questions about whether pricing alone can fuel Tesla's long-term growth. Trump-Japan Trade Deal Sparks Outrage in the U.S. Auto Industry A new trade agreement between former U.S. President Donald Trump's administration and Japan has drawn sharp criticism from American automakers—especially the Detroit Big Three. The deal imposes a 15% tariff on Japanese cars and parts, while U.S. brands manufacturing abroad continue to face tariffs of up to 25%. Beyond the numbers, the deal reignites the debate between protectionism and free-market competition, potentially disrupting global supply dynamics. Bentley Bentayga Speed Tested by Arab GT's Mousub Shashaa In a rare and exclusive drive, Arab GT founder Mousub Shashaa got behind the wheel of the latest Bentley Bentayga Speed—the most powerful version of the British marque's top-selling SUV. While the model has moved away from the iconic W12 engine, it's now bolder than ever. A key highlight is the Akrapovič titanium exhaust system, which adds an exhilarating acoustic edge to the driving experience. It's a clear example of Bentley's unmatched ability to merge ultra-luxury with uncompromising performance.

Saudi Arabia launches first pilot phase of self-driving vehicles in Riyadh

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has launched the initial pilot phase of autonomous vehicles in Riyadh, marking a significant step toward smart, AI-driven transport systems. Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Transport General Authority, Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, inaugurated the program on Wednesday, emphasizing its role in enabling cutting-edge technologies and advancing a safe, intelligent transport ecosystem. The project will operate in real-life settings across seven key areas in Riyadh, including Terminals 2 and 5 at King Khalid International Airport, Roshn Business Front, Princess Nourah University, the North Train Station, and the Transport General Authority's headquarters. A total of 13 pickup and drop-off points have been designated. Developed through a cross-sector partnership involving the Ministry of Interior, SDAIA, the Geospatial Authority, and private firms like AiDriver, WeRide, and Uber, the project reflects Saudi Arabia's drive to localize innovation and foster public-private collaboration. The vehicles will be monitored closely by onboard safety officers throughout the 12-month pilot phase. They will operate on major highways and urban roads under the direct regulatory and technical oversight of the Authority. Al-Jasser said the initiative demonstrates the Kingdom's commitment to sustainable mobility and economic growth, calling it 'a model for smart and secure transport partnerships.' The Authority confirmed the pilot aims to prepare for broader national rollout, positioning Saudi Arabia at the forefront of autonomous mobility in the region. © Copyright 2022 The Saudi Gazette. Jordan: Bus routes connecting Amman with Irbid, Jerash launched

AMMAN — Minister of Transport Wissam Tahtamouni on Tuesday inaugurated the Amman–Irbid and Amman–Jerash bus routes, as part of the transportation project between the capital and other governorates. The project, funded by government support totalling JD4.5 million, aims to enhance the integration and reliability across the Kingdom, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The project includes the operation of 39 buses on the Amman–Irbid route and 15 buses on the Amman–Jerash line. An additional nine buses are expected to join the Jerash route soon, bringing the total fleet serving the two routes to 63 modern buses. These vehicles are equipped with 'advanced' technologies designed to ensure passenger comfort and safety, including vehicle tracking systems, electronic fare collection, onboard surveillance cameras, and real-time passenger information systems. Tahtamouni said that this initiative is part of a broader national plan to modernise public transportation between the capital and the governorates. She described the project as a 'genuine' step towards establishing a smart and efficient public transport network that improves service delivery and facilitates citizens' mobility, all while maintaining technical, administrative and regulatory standards. The minister also noted that the pilot operations have shown promising results, with both routes currently serving around 3,000 passengers per day on weekdays. This number is expected to rise progressively to 7,000 daily passengers as service frequency and operational efficiency improve to meet growing demand for intercity transport. Tahtamouni announced that the trial operation of the Amman–Karak route also commenced on Tuesday, while the Amman–Salt line will begin its pilot phase later this month. Both are scheduled for official launch at the beginning of August, as part of the project's rollout. Tahtamouni reiterated the ministry's commitment to completing all phases of the project on schedule, in alignment with the transport needs of citizens nationwide. The project is being implemented by the Comprehensive Multiple Transportation Company, the official operator, under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Transport and the Land Transport Regulatory Commission. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Use public bus service in Dubai? Here's what you should know

Image credit: WAM/Website Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) continues its drive to expand the use of smart systems and artificial intelligence in the public bus service, enhancing the overall efficiency of the emirate's mass transit network. Read- This was highlighted in a statement by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai's RTA, according to a Public Bus: Service coverage and daily trips The integration of AI and smart systems has improved operational performance, reduced costs, enhanced adherence to schedules, and increased customer satisfaction. Currently, the bus service covers about 88 per cent of the emirate. A fleet of 1,390 buses completes 11,000 daily trips, covering approximately 333,000 kilometres. Why should residents use public transport in Dubai? RTA remains committed to enhancing the public bus system to encourage residents to choose public transport for their daily commutes. The authority aims to strengthen connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial areas by integrating the bus network with the Dubai Metro. Buses serve as vital links to other transport modes, including the metro, tram, and taxis. RTA's plan for dedicated bus and taxi lanes This year, the RTA will expand its dedicated bus and taxi lanes by adding six new lanes spanning 13 kilometres. With this addition, the total length of dedicated lanes will reach 20 kilometres. The expansion is expected to increase passenger numbers by 10 per cent, improve bus arrival times by 42 per cent, reduce journey times by 41 per cent, promote greater public transport usage, and help alleviate traffic congestion. In numbers: Public bus scenario in Dubai In 2024, the number of public bus users reached 188 million, marking an 8 per cent increase compared to 2023. The current fleet of 1,390 buses operates across 187 routes, including 110 urban and rural routes, 64 metro link routes, 13 intercity routes, and seasonal services to destinations such as Global Village. These buses make 11,000 trips daily, cover more than 333,000 kilometres, and transport over 500,000 riders each day. The on-time arrival rate exceeds 77 per cent. Reviews of bus service routes The RTA conducts regular reviews of bus routes using operational data and passenger feedback. Last year, it introduced nine express routes, nine new metro link routes, and four taxi routes in high-demand areas. The activation of a bus priority system at key intersections also improved arrival times by up to 12 per cent. New generation of bus stations In recent years, RTA has launched a new generation of bus stations that feature modern designs and advanced engineering solutions to support high-quality transport services. These stations meet integration standards, improve connectivity, and ensure convenient, safe access for pedestrians and cyclists. They are also designed to be inclusive, with dedicated features for People of Determination. How bus stations improve connectivity The upgraded stations also enhance connectivity between transport hubs, development areas, and surrounding neighbourhoods. This includes addressing first- and last-mile travel needs and integrating key elements such as bus stops, cycling lanes, pedestrian crossings, landscaping, and bike racks—encouraging more walking and personal mobility. Eco-friendly, accessible buses RTA operates a modern fleet of buses that comply with European low-carbon emission standards (Euro 6). These buses offer spacious seating, advanced safety features, and user-friendly designs for optimal comfort and accessibility. Low-entry designs and designated spaces for People of Determination ensure ease of use for all passengers. Mass transit system Dubai's mass transit system is characterised by its multi-modal integration, forming the backbone of daily transport for residents. This interconnected network has reshaped the city's mobility culture, encouraging greater adoption of public transport across all demographics. RTA's strategic plans focus on expanding road networks, crossings, and the entire mass transit infrastructure—covering metro, tram, buses, marine transport, first- and last-mile solutions, and shared mobility options. Efforts are also underway to enhance pedestrian and cycling facilities, improve connectivity, and optimise traffic and transport management systems to boost the efficiency of both road and public transit services. Policies to reduce private vehicle dependence Policies have been implemented to reduce reliance on private vehicles by promoting public transport and shared mobility solutions as sustainable, efficient alternatives.
