Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for southwestern Manitoba, warning that conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds throughout the day.
A similar condition yesterday led to a few reports of funnel clouds in Saskatchewan and it appears to be more favourable for today, the agency said.
'These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,' the statement reads. 'This rotation is normally not a danger near the ground, but there is a chance it could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.'
ECCC notes the landspout tornadoes usually do not cause significant damage but can still be dangerous - strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.
If conditions worsen, the agency says it will issue tornado watches or warnings as needed.
Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and be prepared to take shelter if a warning is issued.
