Slim sneakers are the shoe of the summer

They were once worn by athletes to win Olympic track races in the 1970s. Now, slim, low-profile sneakers are more often seen on the style set than in the context of 5,000-meter sprints. Harry Styles has several pairs of the oft-sold out Dries Van Noten's panelled leather and suede sneakers ($495), while Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber and Addison Rae are regularly seen out and about in their vividly-colored Onitsuka Tiger styles (ranging from $155 to $215). Dua Lipa, a global brand ambassador for Puma, has the more wallet-friendly compact Speed Cat silhouette in red, black, pink and even a silver ballerina version ($100). In June, Prada put forward its own offering with the new Montecarlo sneaker ($1,100) — a re-edition of a design from Spring-Summer 2005. Bottega Veneta describes its Orbit Flash shoe ($990) as 'a low-top lace-up ballet sneaker' with 'supple suede with lightweight nylon', while Miu Miu boasts that its Plume ($950) style is 'sleek and extremely light' — though they do offer a version where this aerodynamic design is weighed down with shoelace charms and miniature keyrings. 'It's more simple, it's less flashy,' said David Fischer, founder and CEO of youth culture platform Highsnobiety, in a phone interview, observing the current footwear aesthetic. Global retail analytics company Edited's analyst and footwear expert Katharine Carter agreed, telling CNN that slimline running-inspired trainers have emerged as 2025's biggest sneaker trend. Even mass-market brands such as H&M and Zara are now getting in on the action: Carter noted an uptick of 367% more slim-soled styles flooding the shelves for the Spring-Summer 2025 season compared to 2024. By contrast, Edited estimates new designs of chunky and platform sneakers have decreased 37% year-on-year. The current preference for slim-fit, low-profile footwear marks a shift away from the chunky 'ugly' shoe trend that has dominated the runways — and individual closets — for almost a decade. The Balenciaga Triple S, created by the mononymic designer Demna during his tenure at the brand, disrupted the sneaker landscape in the mid-to-late 2010s. Its vertiginous, stacked sole was instantly recognizable, and a new era of chunky sneakers with mainstream appeal, such as Zara's Multi-Piece sneaker, the New Balance 09060 and the Adidas Yeezy 500 'Blush', soon followed. However, around 2023, their popularity began to wane (that year, the Triple S was booted off the top spot of GQ's annual Best Sneakers list and replaced by the re-issued Adidas Samba from 1972 — a football training shoe, with its earliest iteration dating back to 1949). 'I always like to say that fashion is like physics; for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction,' said Emma McClendon, assistant professor of fashion studies at St John's University in New York, in a phone call. Noting the pendulum swing of trends, she explained: 'Fashion is predicated on a desire for newness.' But there has been a collective shrinking of silhouettes and styles of clothes more generally, too. From the controversial return of skinny jeans to the uptick in hotpants and boob tubes, 'stuff is getting slimmer,' said McClendon. 'Fashion doesn't happen in a vacuum,' she added. 'It's possibly one of the most visceral ways that we bodily engage with culture.' Many have been quick to draw a connective throughline between the revival of trends like skinny jeans and bandage dress with the increasing accessibility of Ozempic and other GLP-1 injectables. 'We have to address the fact that what we're seeing is a return to the thin ideal in a really scary way,' said McClendon. 'In general, it's that you want to be smaller, you want to be demure, you want to be all of these things associated with being ladylike,' McClendon added. Could that shift be making its way to our footwear choices? In addition to the rise of slimline shoes, there has also been growing interest in 'Sneakerinas,' a hybrid shoe that combines a traditional sneaker with the more girlish ballet flat. Often, they are little more than wispy slips of satin or suede. Sometimes they have ribbons in lieu of laces — much like the version sold by Chinese footwear brand Vivaia, which has become a veritable off-duty model staple thanks to endorsements from Bella Hadid and Amelia Gray. EDITED reported a 112% increase in the number of sneakers described as 'ballerina' or 'Mary Jane' in the past year. Today, shoes are not only getting slimmer, some are barely there at all. The mesh Alaia ballet flats — fashion search engine Lyst's hottest product at the end of 2024 — are almost see-through, much to some fashionistas' delight and others' chagrin. Even Balenciaga is taking note: its most head-turning sneaker release since the Triple S is the Zero shoe. Available in beige and black, the barely-there footwear is molded from a footprint, with the wearer's feet secured only at the toe and heel. If we are in the era of the naked dress, maybe next is the naked shoe. 'I think in many ways, the shoe world is very much marching in one direction here,' said Fischer.

Lyles scorches to comeback win, Alfred conquers 100m

Lyles delivered a near-faultless run to clock 19.88 seconds to edge Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo into second with 19.97sec. And Alfred timed a very comfortable looking 10.79sec to win the women's event-ending blue riband race ahead of American Jacious Sears (11.02). But Lyles was the star of the show at a packed Stade Louis II in perfect balmy conditions. Tebogo had even said that when the American's face appears on meet posters, people want to come and see him perform. And so it proved, Lyles coasting to a morale-boosting victory after successfully coming back from a tendon injury. "I pray for times like this to be out here and do what I love. I come out here and I give my best," said Lyles. The 10th competition on the 15-meet Diamond League circuit was loaded with a raft of top track and field stars, none less so in the electric men's 800m. There was a late change in the wavelight technology that informs racers of record pacing in the two-lap race, with an unexpected tilt at Kenyan David Rudisha's world record from when he won gold at the 2012 London Olympics. His compatriot and current Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi looked liked he might break the now mythical mark of 1:40.91, but he just faded at the line to win in a meet record and world lead of 1:41.44. American Josh Hoey, the world indoor champion, was second in 1:42.01, with Algerian Djamel Sedjati rounding out the podium (1:42.20). "I came to run a season's best and a meeting record," Wanyonyi said. "I came prepared. I gave my best today so I am happy with the result." Bol on top form There was another world-leading meet record in the women's 400m hurdles as world champion Femke Bol shot out a warning to the imperious Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone with a maiden victory in Monaco in 51.95sec. The win took Bol's incredible streak of consecutive victories in the Diamond League since 2021 to 26, including four final wins. The Dutchwoman easily saw off competition from Dalilah Muhammad and fellow American Anna Cockrell, Olympic silver medallist in Paris, who finished second and third. "Running 51 is always very special, I don't do that every day," Bol said. "I am feeling good so far this season, I had a great start to it. I also did two 400m flats but I could see my shape getting better." Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis again dominated the pole vault, the US-born Swede breaking the meet record with a successful vault of 6.05m on just his third effort of the competition, with only Greece's Emmanouil Karalis left to push him. Once the two-time Olympic champion had cleared that height, he skipped 6.10m, forcing Karalis into a third failure, and second place. Pundits might have reckoned that there would be no world record attempt, Duplantis happy to call it a day ahead of a month off competition with an eye on peaking at Tokyo in September. But, ever the competitor, the bar was raised to 6.29m, 1cm higher than the record mark he set in Eugene last week. But it was not to be and three failures at the new height brought the Swede's evening to an end. Dominican Marileidy Paulino edged American Aaliyah Butler by three-hundredths for victory in the 400m flat in 49.06sec. The men and women's short hurdles were won by American Trey Cunningham (13.09sec) and Jamaica's Megan Tapper (12.34) respectively. Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha won the men's 5,000m in 12:49.46 and Morocco's two-time Olympics champion Soufiane El Bakkali claimed victory in the 3,000m steeplechase in 8:03.18.

New swimmers make a splash at annual IASC championships

Plenty of new swimmers make a splash at the annual championships (Image: Contributed) SWIMMERS of all ages raced through the water to score big at their swim club's annual championships last month. Youngsters from Inverclyde Amateur Swimming Club (IASC) made a splash at the club's internal championship event on Sunday, June 22 in the length pool at Greenock's Waterfront. Advertisement On the day 77 members took part in the sprints, with the youngest competitor being six years old - and with nine new members taking part for the first time. (Image: Contributed) The sprints event culminated in a 'skins knock-out' competition which saw the top scoring six boys and six girls race over 50 metres, with the stroke decided at random and the slowest swimmer eliminated each time. The winning boy was Blake Herdman, and the winning girl was Emma Binnie. IASC vice president Ewan Wilson says the event was a huge success and told the Tele it was great to see so many new swimmers take part, with a 'full house' of spectators cheering everyone on. Advertisement He said: "Our club championships was a great success and a great occasion, enjoyed by all those participating and in attendance. 'It showcases the very best of our club with our youngest swimmers taking part in their first competitive gala and our more senior swimmers showing off the skills they spend the year honing, all supported by their family and fellow swimmers. 'We are very proud of each and every one of them and for taking part and for their efforts." The championship comes only weeks after the Tele spoke with the club about the fundraising efforts they have had to undertake to 'save' the club following two of their sponsors leaving. Advertisement (Image: Contributed) Ewan added: "A massive thank you also to the club's army of volunteers. Without their efforts and time then events like this simply wouldn't happen. 'I would also like to thank Inverclyde Leisure for their continued support and assistance too." The club's age group champions won't be decided until after the IASC second event which takes place later this year. All the winners will receive their awards at the club's annual presentation night in January.

4 High-Impact Treadmill Workouts to Help You Burn Calories

When it's too hot to exercise outside, running on the treadmill can be a great form of indoor cardio. However, not everyone likes working out on treadmills, and simply running on them with no plan can be boring. That's why having specific workouts for the treadmill that are both challenging and energizing can make your time on one go by faster and feel more fun. The following four high-impact treadmill workouts will help you accomplish just that while burning calories. Read more: Best Fitness Apps Watch this: Ring Fit Adventure is a real workout 09:52 1. Sprint intervals Sprint workouts completely transform the typical 20 to 30 minutes on a treadmill. Instead of wondering how it's possible for one minute to feel like 12, you'll marvel at how the workout went by so quickly. Plus, sprints build your anaerobic capacity (your ability to go all-out for short time periods) and -- compared with low-intensity, steady-state exercise -- burn more fat and build more speed. Example workout: 30 seconds of running 30 seconds of rest (walk or step off of the treadmill) 45 seconds of running 45 seconds of rest 1 minute of running 1 minute of rest Repeat three to five times for a total of 13 to 23 minutes. 2. Fartlek training I promise I did not make that word up. Fartlek training is named after a Swedish word that means "speed play." It blends speed training and endurance training to challenge you on all fronts. A fartlek workout forces your body to adapt to various speeds, whereas most workouts focus on just one or two speeds (like the sprint workout described above). Also, a true fartlek workout consists of continuous running -- your recovery intervals should be a light jog followed by a walk or complete rest. Example workout: Jog (easy effort) for 5 minutes Run (moderate effort) for 2 minutes Sprint (hard effort) 1 minute Jog 1 minute Sprint 1 minute Run 2 minutes Jog 5 minutes Cool down or repeat I especially love that fartlek workouts are based on effort rather than pace, so there's no pressure to maintain a certain pace for each interval. Some days, even a slow jog feels difficult, while other days you feel like you can fly. Fartlek workouts allow for those natural discrepancies without making you feel bad about your pace. nd3000/Getty Images 3. Hills and flats Nothing screams "leg burner" like a hill workout. Running -- and even walking -- up hills has profound fitness benefits. You'll build strength and power in your quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves. And you'll also develop core stability, elevate your heart rate and increase speed. Example workout: Warm up with a brisk walk or light jog for 5 minutes Increase the incline to a challenging level and walk for 3 minutes Lower the incline back to base level and run for 3 minutes Keep repeating -- walk the hill for 3, run the flat for 3 -- for 24 minutes (four rounds) If you have experience running hills, you can run both the incline intervals and the flat intervals. Challenge yourself by running the flats at a faster pace. The more you run or walk hills, the easier it will be to run on flat ground -- this is a great tactic to use if you're training for a flat race. Running and walking on an incline helps to build strength in your legs. Getty Images 4. Bodyweight HIIT You don't have to stick to walking or running just because you're on a treadmill. Spice things up by adding bodyweight workouts between your walk/run intervals. Get creative -- focus on one muscle group or do a full-body routine. Either way, adding some resistance training to your treadmill workout will help you develop strength and power over just stamina or speed (all four are important for running). To perform a bodyweight HIIT treadmill workout, simply pause the run and perform the bodyweight exercises behind the treadmill. Depending on how crowded your gym is, this might require strategically choosing your treadmill, but it's definitely doable. Example workout: 3-minute easy jog 1-minute sprint 20 air squats Ten v-ups or sit-ups Five pushups Repeat everything two to four times You can always increase or decrease the reps of each movement, as well as the lengths of the running intervals, depending on your fitness level. Feeling fired up about getting fast? Make sure you choose the best women's running shoes or best running shoes for men that will support your performance and get you to your goals.

McLaughlin-Levrone impresses in 100m debut in Philadelphia

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ventured beyond her usual 400 metres event, clocking an impressive 11.21 seconds to take second place in her first professional 100 metres flat race at the Grand Slam Track meet in Philadelphia on Sunday. The American four-time Olympic champion and world record holder in the 400 metres hurdles, accustomed to dominating the one-lap event, found herself beaten by Jamaica's Ackera Nugent, who won in 11.11 seconds. Nugent's victory completed a weekend double, securing the women's short hurdles group with a perfect 24 points following her success in Saturday's 100 metres hurdles. American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden scorched the track with a blistering time of 10.73 seconds in the 100 metres, cementing her victory in the short sprints group with 24 points after her 200 metres triumph on Saturday. Meanwhile, Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino dominated the women's long sprints group with 24 points, having won the 200 metres in 22.46 seconds. Britain's Lina Nielsen also shone, capturing the 400 metres hurdles in 52.60 seconds, while Etiopia Diribe Welteji secured victory in the 800 metres in 1:58.94. In the men's events, American Kenny Bednarek shaved one-hundredth of a second off his personal best in the 100 metres, finishing in 9.86 seconds and took the short sprints group getting 24 points. Meanwhile, Olympic silver medallist Josh Kerr from Britain beat gold medallist Cole Hocker by just seven-hundredths of a second in a thrilling 1500 metres race, finishing in 3:34.44. American Trevor Bassitt provided late drama in the 400 metres hurdles, outduelling Alison dos Santos and Chris Robinson to win in 45.47 seconds. He also won the men's long hurdles group with 20 points. There were also wins for Americans Trey Cunningham in the short hurdles group 100 metres with a time of 10.36 seconds and Nico Young in the men's 3000 metres in his first Grand Slam Track appearance, while Dominican Alexander Ogando took the men's 200 metres with a time of 20.13 seconds. The Grand Slam Track season will conclude with its fourth meeting in Los Angeles on June 27-29.
