Moses Lake man arrested following domestic violence incident
Jun. 2—MOSES LAKE — A 35-year-old man is in custody following a domestic violence incident that escalated into a standoff with law enforcement Monday morning, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office. Branden Torrey was arrested after allegedly assaulting his domestic partner and firing a round from a handgun into the deck of their home. Deputies responded to a 911 call at approximately 1:15 a.m. from the victim, who reported the incident at a residence in the 6200 block of Mae Valley Road. Involving multiple agencies, including the Moses Lake Police Department and the Moses Lake Regional Tactical Response Team, the situation prompted extensive negotiations that lasted several hours. "Negotiations can generally take a long time because we want to use the least amount of force possible," said GCSO Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman. "Once negotiations broke down, we went to the next step to bring the incident to a safe conclusion." After employing flash bangs and tear gas, Torrey surrendered peacefully to authorities around 5:15 a.m., according to Foreman. He is currently lodged in the Grant County Jail, facing charges of second-degree assault-domestic violence, resisting arrest and possessing a stolen firearm. The victim received medical treatment and was provided with domestic violence resources, Foreman said.

Westmoreland County attorney wounded by self-inflicted gunshot during arrest, police say
A Westmoreland County attorney accused of stealing from a woman's estate was arrested after a brief standoff with police on Saturday. The attorney, Robert Klingensmith, was subsequently hospitalized with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The standoff was at Klingensmith's law office around 5:30 p.m. Police were serving a search warrant. Video sent to KDKA-TV shows police tasing Klingensmith, who began walking toward the police but refused to comply with an officer's orders, prompting the use of the taser. Klingensmith then falls to the ground, where he is handcuffed. Klingensmith had been charged with theft and exploiting an older or care-dependent person. The district attorney's office said Klingensmith was the representative for a woman who died, and it's alleged that Klingensmith failed to pay money from this woman's estate to her heirs. Instead, officials say he transferred more than $300,000 from the woman's account to his personal account. KDKA-TV also spoke with the woman who recorded the video. "I mean, he was kind of barreling towards them. I mean, that could have ended a different way, you know, not a taser. So, I think they did what they had to do to get them down on the ground and handcuffed," Kate Dusch said. "It was scary. It was definitely scary while it was happening, almost crazy to think that that happened right there." Medical staff attempted to perform "life-preserving surgery" on Klingensmith Saturday night. His condition remains unknown, but he is in custody.

Man charged after allegedly exchanging gunfire with police in Prince George, B.C.
The Prince George RCMP detachment is seen in this photo from its Facebook page. (Facebook/PrinceGeorgeRCMP) Mounties in Prince George say a man has been charged after exchanging gunfire with officers earlier this week. Tyler Cavan Suel has been charged with four counts of discharging a firearm with intent and one count each of pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon and flight from a peace officer while pursued, according to a news release from Prince George RCMP. Police say they attempted to stop Suel during 'proactive patrols' near East Perry Road around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. They allege Suel fired at police from his vehicle before fleeing the area. The 39-year-old was located a short time later, prompting 'a lengthy standoff wherein more gunfire was exchanged from both sides,' according to police. The incident shut down Highway 16 east for several hours before the suspect was taken into custody and transported to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Online court records indicate Suel's next court appearance is scheduled for June 2 in Williams Lake. Police said he remains in custody. 'We are incredibly proud of the professional, co-ordinated and timely response our police officers had to this threatening and dynamic event,' said Insp. Chris Riddle, operations officer for Prince George RCMP, in the release. 'Even in the face of being shot at, all of those who responded to the call maintained their professionalism and saw the event through to a positive conclusion.' In a separate statement Friday, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. – which investigates police use-of-force cases in the province – announced that it had completed its review of Suel's arrest. The IIO concluded that the suspect's injuries did not meet the threshold of 'serious harm,' as defined by B.C.'s Police Act, and closed its investigation.
