Tom Cruise awarded Guinness World Record for "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" flaming parachute stunt

Tom Cruise has become a Guinness World Record titleholder for a fiery "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" stunt. In the stunt, Cruise jumps out of a helicopter and deploys a parachute, then lights it on fire. The parachute was pre-soaked in fuel and lit ablaze, the Guinness World Records said in a news release. Cruise had to jump from at least 7,500 feet, the organization said. The flaming parachute could only burn for about three seconds before Cruise had to cut it away and deploy a backup chute. And sometimes, he was doing it while holding a 50-pound camera rig. Cruise conducted the stunt not once, not twice — but 16 times, the Guinness World Records said, making him the record holder for "most burning parachute jumps by an individual." Cruise was awarded the title on June 4. Tom Cruise attends the "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" premiere at Lincoln Center on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in New York. Evan Agostini/Invision/AP "Tom doesn't just play action heroes – he is an action hero!" said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records. "A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It's an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title." It's far from the first incredible stunt Cruise has performed in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. Previous movies have featured him hang from the side of a plane, ride a motorcycle off a cliff and climb the world's tallest building. He is a licensed skydiver and has been a licensed pilot for over 30 years. In "Top Gun: Maverick," Cruise also performed a number of aerial stunts. "The audience can tell when something's been cheated, so it's important to be doing it all for-real," Wade Eastwood, a stunt coordinator on "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" told Guinness World Records. This is Cruise's second Guinness World Record. He holds a box office title for actor with the most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies. He has 11 movies that qualify, starting with 2012's "Jack Reader" and ending with "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning."

Tom Cruise Lands World Record For Burning Parachute Stunt in 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning'

Tom Cruise had already made headlines with his dangerous biplane stunt in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, but now, the fearless 62-year-old actor has landed a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for another practical stunt from the film, his climactic burning parachute jump. Spoilers ahead: The stunt, which was performed for the scene directly following the biplane finale, featured Cruise's Ethan Hunt jumping from the damaged plane with a parachute in hand. As he deploys it mid-air, the parachute promptly sets ablaze, leaving Hunt no choice but to cut it off and deploy his reserve chute at the very last second before impact. While viewers might assume this highly dangerous set piece was done with the help of CGI, the sequence was actually done practically in Drakensberg, South Africa, with Cruise jumping from a helicopter at an altitude of 7,500 feet with a parachute soaked in fuel and rigged to be set ablaze. Better yet, Cruise performed this stunt not once, but 16 times. 'What I'm going to do is I'm going to be deploying, if this is twisted while it's burning, I'm going to be spinning and burning.' Cruise explained in a behind-the-scenes clip from Paramount Pictures showcasing the stunt, 'I have to kick out of the twist and then ignite, within 10 seconds.' Cruise's impressive feat landed him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records, setting a record for 'the most burning parachute jumps by an individual'. With 16 tries at a life-threatening stunt just for one brief scene in the movie, Cruise cements himself as one of the most passionate actors in the industry, one who would go above and beyond for his craft. Either that, or he has a really impressive life insurance package. Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 . He has made it his life-long mission to play every single major game release – lest his wallet dies trying.

Tom Cruise is awarded Guinness World Record with fiery ‘Mission: Impossible 8' stunt

Tom Cruise is now a title-holder for a daring stunt he performed for the latest installment of the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Cruise now holds the title for the 'most burning parachute jumps by an individual,' with his jump count clocking in at 16 times. 'Tom doesn't just play action heroes – he is an action hero!' Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, said in a statement Thursday. 'A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do.' Glenday added that it's 'an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.' Cruise conducted the fiery jumps as a stunt while filming for 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' the eighth film in the popular action franchise in which Cruise has starred since 1996. In a video posted posted to the official YouTube page for Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the film, Cruise is seen discussing logistics for the stunt with stunt coordinators, saying, 'I am going to be deploying. If this is twisted while it's burning, I am going to be spinning and burnt.' He later said in the clip that he wanted to be 'real smart, I'm not saying be risky,' adding with a smirk, 'We don't take risks… obviously.' The clip shows Cruise sky-diving out of the helicopter with his burning parachute all 16 times in rapid succession as the 'Mission: Impossible' theme song plays in the background. This latest stunt is far from the first daring feat Cruise has performed. In addition to his performance around the Olympic Games last summer, the actor is known for conducting his own stunts in his movies.

Daredevil is charged after footage emerges of idiotic stunt in Sydney Harbour

A man has been arrested after attempting to scale the mooring lines of a cruise ship docked at Sydney 's Circular Quay in front of a crowd of onlookers. The 29-year-old climbed onto the Carnival Adventure's tethering ropes about 3pm on Saturday at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney Harbour. Social media videos captured the bizarre stunt, with bystanders gasping and laughing as the man made his way across the mooring line, suspended above the harbour. NSW Police said officers arrived to find the man still clinging to the rope. A police vessel could be seen approaching the man and the mooring line was slowly slackened and lowered toward the water to the sound of laughter from the shore. Footage showed an officer quickly grabbing the man and pulling him aboard the vessel before taking him back to land. Four officers then escorted him from the terminal. He was taken to Day Street Police Station and later charged with three offences. They included entering a cleared zone when not screened and cleared; entering a land-side restricted zone when not authorised; and entering a water-side restricted zone when not authorised. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on June 11. On social media, viewers were divided, with many impressed by the larrikin feat. 'That's amazing, he didn't even lose a (sandal),' one said. 'No-one can have any fun these days,' another added of the arrest. 'What's wrong with what he did? Like, he didn't do any damage?' a third asked. Others were unamused and slammed the man for his behaviour. 'This is a completely ridiculous thing to do,' one wrote. 'It's a stupid thing to do and if old mate fell the coroner's inquest would be to get rid of the ship and build a massive fence around the water, ruining it for everyone else!' another feared.

Acrobatics and tumbling, stunt could become NCAA championship sports for women by 2027

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The sports of acrobatics and tumbling as well as stunt are on track to achieve NCAA championship status for women by spring 2027, the NCAA announced Thursday. Acrobatics and tumbling became an emerging sport in 2020 and stunt received that designation in 2023. Each sport is sponsored by more than 40 schools across the three divisions, the minimum threshold for achieving championship status. The recommendation to hold national championships in 2027 is contingent on official confirmation of the sponsorship and participation numbers for spring 2025 competition. One championship event for athletes across all three divisions would be held for each sport initially. Acrobatics and tumbling is a fast-paced, team-based discipline in which athletes perform synchronized skills in acrobatics, pyramid, toss, tumbling and team routines. Meets feature six events with skills scored on difficulty and execution. The sport is currently governed by the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association. Stunt transforms traditional cheerleading skills into a head-to-head, four-quarter format emphasizing athleticism and precision. Teams compete in partner stunts, pyramids, jumps and tumbling, with points awarded based on execution. Championships are conducted through a double-elimination tournament structure. The sport is currently governed by USA Cheer. ___ AP college sports:
