Get your summer chills in at 'yokai' exhibition in Nagoya

Japanese supernatural creatures known as yokai come to life through the power of digital technology in the "Yokai Immersive Experience Exhibition," which has opened in the city of Nagoya. The exhibition, which started on Saturday at the museum wing of the Kanayama Minami Building and will run through Sept. 23, features an immersive experience in which videos of spooky yokai depicted in artworks such as the "Hyakki Yagyo Emaki" picture scroll and works inspired by "Hyakumonogatari" supernatural storytelling are projected in 3D spaces. It also exhibits realistic 3D-modeled figures of yokai. Over 300 yokai creatures appear in the exhibition, which comprises eight rooms based on distinct themes such as the yokai birthplace and yokai processions. The main attraction is a room themed on a wild dance of yokai. Moving images of supernatural creatures fill the room's walls, ceiling and floor, accompanied by powerful music for a fully immersive experience. Explanations of yokai drawings and caricatures from the Edo Period (1603-1868) and Meiji Era (1868-1912) also help make the exhibition educational and enjoyable for adults. On weekends and the five-day period ending on Aug. 15, traditional yokai such as tengu and kappa will roam the venue. Visitors will also be able to take photographs with the life-size yokai.

Teaser Trailer For Osgood Perkins' Horror Film KEEPER Starrring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland — GeekTyrant

Neon has released the first teaser for Keeper , marking the third horror project from director Osgood Perkins following Longlegs and The Monkey . The filmmaker has been on a roll lately, and this next outing looks just as unsettling. The film stars Tatiana Maslany ( Orphan Black ) and Rossif Sutherland ( Possessor ) as a couple celebrating their anniversary in a remote cabin. Things take a dark turn when Malcolm (Sutherland) suddenly heads back to the city, leaving Liz (Maslany) isolated. Alone in the woods, she comes face-to-face with an unspeakable evil lurking in the shadows of the cabin's sinister past. It looks like it's going to be psychological, and possibly supernatural, descent into terror. The script comes from Nick Lepard, and with Perkins' growing reputation for crafting deeply atmospheric horror, this first look suggests another chilling experience that dives headfirst into isolation and dread. Would you check out Keeper based on this teaser?

Tom Cruise 'has been a mentor for Ana de Armas'

Tom Cruise has been an "incredible mentor" to Ana de Armas. The 63-year-old actor and Ana, 37, have a "special work relationship" and the actress has "prepped" all summer for their first project together - a supernatural ocean thriller called Deeper. A source told People: "Tom is crazy hardworking and she's very excited to work with him. She calls it an opportunity of a lifetime." Tom and Ana have been romantically linked to each other over recent months. However, an insider has insisted that their relationship is "not romantic" and that they are simply friends and work partners. The source shared: "Tom is an incredible mentor to Ana. She has nothing but amazing things to say about him." Tom is still one of Hollywood's most bankable stars, and he's never lost his passion for filmmaking. The actor recently admitted that he's fulfilling a "life-long dream" by working in the movie business. He told Extra: "It's such a privilege to do what I do. "It's been a life-long dream of mine to be able to do this and to make movies ... I truly, I love it. That is my, I don't know, it's not what I do, it's who I am. "It is my honour to entertain." Tom is willing to put his body on the line in order to make the best movies possible. The actor - who has suffered various injuries during his career, including a broken ankle while shooting 2018's Mission: Impossible - Fallout - explained: "I fly aerobatic airplanes, I fly jets, I fly helicopters, and this took all of our ability and all of our skill to be able find the camera angles to tell this story." Tom needed to be in tip-top physical shape to shoot the Mission: Impossible movies, and he felt particularly proud of the action scenes in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. He said: "Physically, what I had to do to prepare for this thing was quite extreme, and I can tell you this - whatever people see in the trailer or on TV, it is not even a taste of what they have in store for them when they see this film."

Coroner says ‘Annabelle' doll was not present in the hotel room where paranormal investigator Dan Rivera suddenly died

A Pennsylvania coroner is revealing new details surrounding the sudden death of Dan Rivera, a noted paranormal investigator who was on tour with the Raggedy Ann doll known as Annabelle, made famous by 'The Conjuring' horror film franchise, when he died. Francis Dutrow, coroner in Adams County, PA, told CNN on Thursday that the doll was not present in the hotel room where Rivera died earlier this week in Gettysburg. He was reportedly 54. Ever since the death was reported by the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR) via a press release posted to Facebook on Tuesday, horror and supernatural fans have theorized about a possible connection between the Annabelle doll, which Rivera was seen handling during the 'Devils on the Run Tour' over the weekend, and his death. The case remains an'active investigation,' according to the coroner, with autopsy results expected in eight to ten weeks. Pennsylvania State Police public information officer Megan Frazer shared a report on Wednesday citing details that match Rivera's case, and stated that 'nothing unusual or suspicious was observed at the scene.' On Tuesday, NESPR posted to social media announcing 'the sudden and heartbreaking loss of our dear friend and colleague' Rivera. 'Dan was not only a vital part of our team for over a decade, but also a deeply compassionate, loyal, and dedicated friend.' Rivera was affiliated with the Warren Occult Museum in Connecticut, which shared on its Facebook page that he 'played a vital role in the museum's operations, often responsible for transporting and safeguarding Annabelle during public appearances and private events.' 'He was respected for his careful approach and deep respect for the artefact's (sic) alleged supernatural reputation. Rivera's sudden passing has shocked both colleagues and paranormal enthusiasts worldwide.' NESPR's statement also said Rivera was a US Army veteran, and that he 'worked closely with' Lorraine Warren – the late famed paranormal investigator who determined that the real-life Annabelle doll was demonically possessed in 1968. Warren was portrayed by actor Vera Farmiga in the 'Conjuring' films, an immensely successful horror franchise that has also seen sequels and standalone spinoffs, including 2014's 'Annabelle' and 2018's 'The Nun.' A new sequel starring Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, titled 'The Conjuring: Last Rites,' is due in September.

Book review: 'Royal gambit' by daniel o'malley finds magic in the murder of a royal family member

Author Daniel O'Malley returns to the world of his series he started with The Rook with Royal Gambit, an enjoyable and sometimes unwieldy novel about the supernatural operatives of a paranormal secret service investigating a string of bizarre murders. Gambit centers around the aristocratic Lady Alexandra Mondegreen (Alix) and her investigation into the mysterious murder of her childhood friend, the Prince of Wales. Alix has the unique talent of being able to shatter bones with just a touch of her hand, but she is resented by the other members of the service for the perceived favoritism that comes with her noble title. Her youth was spent as a secret bodyguard to Princess Louise, the woman who now finds herself next in line to the throne. This connection proves useful as the agency's way into investigating who at the palace (or outside of it) could be responsible for the death of the heir apparent and gives Alix a chance to prove her worth as an asset to the agency. O'Malley finds humor in showing how these agents with strange and sometimes absurd powers (one senior official can turn into a stegosaurus at will) adhere to the same bureaucracy and hierarchies as any other government organization. Along with coming to work on time and navigating office politics, there is a chance you will be the victim of a dinosaur stampede or watch your colleague turn into a tree. Alix also emerges as a compelling heroine, driven by her ambition to rise within the ranks of the Checquy and prove herself, yet deeply committed to uncovering the truth behind the tragedy that struck a family she has genuine affection for. A highlight of the book is her sometimes awkward but humorous journey as a new lady-in-waiting to the princess, having to balance garden lunches with dangerous missions. Although intended as a stand-alone story, O'Malley assumes readers will quickly grasp the complexities of this world and how it operates without much prior knowledge. However, keeping track of the extensive rules and traditions of this secret service and upper-crust English society makes it difficult to keep engaged in the mystery at hand. The book gets bogged down in its mythology and is slow to give us plot developments. Further challenging the pacing of the novel are the constant additions to an over-large cast of characters, all with different supernatural abilities or aristocratic titles. All of these elements lead to a clunky conclusion that too easily ties up loose ends and loses the impact of the tragedy that started the story. The book would have benefited from more clever twists and paranormal action as opposed to heavy exposition about this super-secret agency and the people who run it. Ultimately, this makes for a fun, elevated beach read for those who enjoy their mystery novels with supernatural leanings and a dry British sense of humor.
