RICHARD KAY reveals how he accidentally 'ruined' Queen Elizabeth's birthday surprise... Find out how in the Palace Confidential newsletter

Due to the nature of her role, Queen Elizabeth II was rarely surprised when it came to her birthday. Almost every year, the beloved monarch would head to the luxurious Ritz Hotel in the heart of London for supper. But her children - namely Prince Edward - were determined to push the boat out (literally) for her 70th birthday in 1996. A plan was hatched for the Queen, Prince Philip and other members of the Royal Family to travel via the River Thames to the famous Waterside Inn at Bray in Berkshire. Unfortunately, Richard Kay, the Daily Mail's Editor-at-Large, unknowingly broke the story before Her Majesty could be treated to the unexpected meal. 'There was uproar at Buckingham Palace,' Richard confides in this week's Palace Confidential newsletter. 'I was accused of spoiling a surprise party, and told that the Queen, because of the very nature of her role, got very few unexpected treats and I had ruined one.' Not long afterwards, Richard was reporting on one of Her Majesty's overseas tours during which she hosted a garden party. But, he recalls, he was quietly asked to avoid the Queen – because she was still a little sore about the 'party episode'. Doing as he was told, Richard made himself busy by talking to a group of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting. The following day, one of them let it slip that Prince Philip had spotted this encounter and told them off for talking to 'that bloody man'. Both Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson were accused of leaking the story to Richard - but he insists they were blameless. Indeed, the truth behind where the story came from is even more unbelievable. Girl, 10, given birthday surprise by Myles Smith

A 10-year-old girl had the surprise of a lifetime when singer Myles Smith visited her at school and sung her happy birthday. Matilda from Ipswich, along with her classmates, was given the surprise on Friday ahead of Smith, 27, supporting Ed Sheeran at Portman Road stadium that night. Secretly her mother, Kate Nunn, had set it up after she saw Smith went on "side quests" when visiting places across the UK. Matilda said at first she thought it was going to be "some random singer". "We went into the performing arts room and we had to close our eyes because someone was going to come in," she explained. "Two people came in and we had to close our eyes again, then Myles Smith came in." "I felt dizzy and I thought it was all just a dream. "He sung some of his songs and then he sung me Happy Birthday." Matilda said her friends had told her she was "so lucky" and she had watched a video of the moment back "a million" times. "He was very kind," she added. She later attended the Sheeran concert that night and saw Smith during his support act. Ms Nunn organised the surprised two weeks before it happened and kept it from her daughter. "I'd seen that he'd done side quests when he has gone places, surprised fans, and been and done things," she explained. "I just reached out to his management team and they were happy to arrange it all. "[They were] so, so lovely." Smith shared the visit on his TikTok account and described the visit as "so wholesome". The video has been seen over 84,000 times with 7,700 likes and 236 comments. At the end of last year, Smith, who is from Luton, was announced as the winner the Brit Awards' Rising Star prize for 2025. The singer started posting covers online during the Covid lockdowns and quickly gained popularity. His top streamed songs on Spotify include Stargazing, Nice to Meet You and Solo. ‘It's a surprise': Govt chief secretary says Anwar's secret announcement will bring joy to Malaysians, civil servants

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar today said that the upcoming announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to bring joy to Malaysians, including civil servants. According to a report in Harian Metro, Shamsul declined to elaborate further, saying the initiative was a 'surprise' and fully under wraps. 'If it's for the public, they'll be happy. If it's for civil servants, they'll be happy too, Allah willing,' he was quoted as saying. Yesterday, Anwar hinted on Facebook that a special 'appreciation' for the people would be announced soon. The post included the slogan 'Bersama Malaysiaku' (with my Malaysia). No official date for the announcement has been shared.
