Chelsea pay £5m to send Jadon Sancho back to Man United

Chelsea will pay a £5million penalty clause to not sign Jadon Sancho permanently this summer after the club failed to agree personal terms with the Manchester United forward. Chelsea signed Sancho, 25, on loan from United last August in a deal that included an obligation-to-buy clause worth £25million. However, the London club still retained the option to withdraw from the agreement provided that they pay a £5million penalty fee. After trying to negotiate personal terms this week, the club have opted against signing Sancho permanently and he will now return to Old Trafford when his loan ends on June 30. It is understood that Sancho will not play for Chelsea at the Club World Cup, which begins on June 14, and that the winger does have other options this summer. Chelsea's wage model is incentive-based, with new contracts generally consisting of lower base salaries that are then boosted by performance-related criteria, both individual and collective. Sancho has made 41 appearances for Chelsea this season, scoring five goals and providing ten assists. He scored the third goal during the club's 4-1 win over Real Betis in the Conference League final last week, which will now be his final game for the club. Chelsea are in the market for a right-footed left winger this month and have renewed their interest in the Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, 20, who has a £51million release clause. The club have also held an interest in United's Alejandro Garnacho, with both players subject to enquiries from Chelsea in January. Chelsea are interested in Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike, 22, despite having already completed the signing of the Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap for £30million, with official confirmation of that deal expected soon. It is not yet clear whether Delap, 22, will play for Chelsea at the Club World Cup in the United States or play for England Under-21 at the European Championship in Slovakia. It is believed that Chelsea would prefer the former, and the Club World Cup holds more seniority under Fifa regulations, meaning Chelsea would have the final say. Chelsea will be including their new midfielder Dário Essugo, 20, whose signing from Sporting Lisbon was confirmed on Monday, as well as Mamadou Sarr, the 19-year-old defender who will be joining the club from Strasbourg this summer for €14million (about £11.8million). Sarr will travel with Chelsea to the US, rather than compete for France's youth sides this summer.

Chelsea will send Sancho back for £5m and prepare to confirm £30m Delap signing

Chelsea have decided against signing Jadon Sancho on a permanent basis and will pay a £5m penalty to send the winger back to Manchester United when his loan ends on 30 June. Chelsea, who are set to announce the £30m signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town after finalising personal terms with the striker, loaned Sancho last summer with an obligation to buy for £25m. However an option for Chelsea to pay a penalty clause to terminate the agreement allowed them to assess whether they wanted to buy the 25-year-old. Misgivings over Sancho's consistency meant it was unlikely that Chelsea, who are weighing up a bid for Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens as they look to sign before the Club World Cup a right-footed winger capable of playing on the left, were going to commit themselves to him. Enzo Maresca's system relies on wide players. Sancho had an opportunity to press his case and his talent has flickered at times. He contributed to Chelsea qualifying for the Champions League and scored when they beat Real Betis in the Conference League final last week. Yet Sancho, who struggled after joining Manchester United from Dortmund in 2021, was unable to hold down a regular starting place and experienced a long dip in form after Christmas. Chelsea think Sancho is talented and have been impressed with his attitude but fear he is not consistent enough. They could not strike an agreement for the former Dortmund to sign on a lower salary in line with the club's wage policy. He cut an unhappy figure after moving to Old Trafford four years ago and joined Dortmund on loan after clashing with Erik ten Hag. Sancho had joined Chelsea by the time United fired Ten Hag and hired Ruben Amorim last November. It remains to be seen whether Amorim would want to look at Sancho in pre-season. United are looking to refresh their squad and sell unwanted players after missing out on European qualification.

Gary Neville names four Man Utd stars who must leave this summer and the transfer exit that's a ‘step too far'

GARY NEVILLE has named five Manchester United players he thinks should leave the club this summer. The Red Devils endured a nightmare season both in the Premier League and in Europe this term. 6 They finished the campaign 15th in the Prem table with 18 fewer points than last season. United also failed to qualify for European football after losing to Spurs in the Europa League final last month. Several players are now expected to be sold in the coming months, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe targetting a rebuild. And former right-back Neville has named the players he thinks should be in line for the axe. Speaking on the It's Called Soccer podcast, the 50-year-old said: " Marcus Rashford has to leave for him and the club. I think that ship has sailed and he needs to find himself another club. "I would worry that Aston Villa haven't announced that they're keeping him already because I think that could have been an easy deal to do with United if they were going to keep him, so it sounds to me like Villa aren't going to keep him. "I would say for Marcus' sake and for United's sake that it feels like that path has come to an end." Neville can also see a similar situation unfolding with Jadon Sancho following his Chelsea loan spell. He continued: "I feel a little bit similarly with him as I do with Marcus. I'd be a bit concerned that Chelsea haven't made the noises that they're going to keep him. "Again, Manchester United have to make sure they part ways with him and, from Jadon's point of view, he has to make sure that he parts ways with Manchester United." Rashford to Inter Milan? Man Utd Star Eyes Shock Serie A Move! 6 6 6 The former England right-back also believes that Man Utd should consider selling Antony to a club in Spain following his loan spell with Real Betis. Neville explained: "I can imagine he was absolutely going under while he was at Old Trafford. "He's gone to Spain and having seen a couple of players that I played with not do it Old Trafford but do it in Spain… I think he's suited down to the ground and it's been proven. "Over there, there's a different tactical awareness, there's a different technical ability and there's a way of playing that's just more suited to players. "The players I'm referring to are players like Kleberson or Diego Forlan. It just didn't quite happen for them but they had really good careers and I think there are players like that who just aren't suited to a league. "I think Antony is perfect for Spain and, again, somebody who Manchester United should facilitate leaving. It's best for Antony and best for the club." Alejandro Garnacho has been embroiled in a public fallout with United head coach Ruben Amorim over the last few weeks. The 20-year-old was left furious after being limited to just 20 minutes of match time in last month's Europa League final defeat in Bilbao. His brother then claimed that he was "thrown under the bus" by Amorim. Garnacho has now been told that he will not have a place in the Man Utd squad next season. And Neville believes the club should cash-in on the forward when they can. He continued: "I think if players are taking on the manager and if players are questioning the manager in public through social media or through other means, the manager has to win. "If the manager doesn't win, the manager has to leave and I don't think that's going to happen this time. That's happened far too many times before. I think Garnacho will leave purely because of that, I think they've had enough. "Garnacho can play in the Premier League, no doubt, but I think he'll love it in Spain, he'll thrive over there, he'll score goals. He'll probably be someone next season that we're all looking back on thinking, 'Why didn't Manchester United keep him?', that type of thing will probably happen, there's an element of that, but I think he has to go. "That's not me throwing my toys out the pram and saying, 'Get him out the club'… no, for him and the club, I think it's right that he goes. "Those four players should leave, not just because Manchester United should let them go, but because they should go and find themselves a place in their lives where they can go and play football because it's not at Old Trafford." Kobbie Mainoo is another player who has been linked with an exit in recent months. However, Neville insists he still has a place at Old Trafford and could be a crucial asset for the Red Devils in the future. "Mainoo, no. That's a step too far," he concluded. "If we can't give Kobbie Mainoo a job in that two in midfield… I look at Mainoo and the way he plays football and I think a top club would want him. "Why can't we make him a top player? If he's one of ours and he's shown talent. "I don't know what's gone on there in the last few months. He's obviously had some injuries which has caused him a problem so he needs to stay fit, but I'd like to think he could be one of that two in midfield that Ruben Amorim plays. "It's probably not Casemiro as his partner and it's probably not Ugarte as his partner, it's probably someone else in there who is better than those two, if I'm being honest. "But we should be building around Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield and not because he's come through the ranks." The Red Devils have already made one signing this summer. Matheus Cunha has joined in a £62.5million transfer from Wolves. Bryan Mbuemo looks set to follow after choosing to join the club over any other Premier League side. 6

Football transfer rumours: Dortmund close on Jobe Bellingham signing?

Bruno Fernandes is pretty much the only person to come out of Manchester United's season with any credit, and it turns out that has got Al-Hilal's scouting boffins very excited, so much so that the Saudi club have reportedly offered a £100m transfer fee and a total wage package of £200m over three years to land the Portuguese. That sort of money for a player who turns 31 in September is not bad going for any party (apart from Al-Hilal), but Fernandes has – according to Fabrizio Romano – rejected the move as he 'wants to play at [the] top level in Europe'. There's a joke there somewhere about Manchester United and the 'top level in Europe' but the Mill isn't going to stoop. Fernandes was pictured at the birthday party of João Cancelo, who plays for Al-Hilal, over the weekend and now both have joined up with the Portuguese national side for their Nations League semi-final against Germany on Wednesday evening. One man that could join Fernandes at Manchester United is Bryan Mbeumo after his 20-goal season for Brentford. The Cameroon international has interest from Champions League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle but is said to favour a move to Old Trafford. United are expected to open talks with Mbeumo in the next few weeks but will likely have to sell before they buy: Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Højlund are both being linked with Inter, with the Dane previously shining in Serie A for Atalanta. The lovely pink front page of Gazzetta dello Sport has a Federico Chiesa quote all over it, with the Italian linked with a move back to his former club. 'Juventus? I still love the club. Returning there one day? why not?' teased the forward. 'Thiago Motta [the now departed manager at Juve] didn't want me there. He told me that I was not part of his plans, and should go find a team.' Chiesa did find a team last summer in Liverpool but after an underwhelming season in red, it may be that the Premier League champions are willing to part with Chiesa, who reportedly earns a six-figure weekly salary on Merseyside. Some confusion on the Chelsea transfer front, although that is nothing new. The club have activated Liam Delap's £30m release clause at Ipswich Town but are now also being linked with another striker nearly triple the price: Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike. And while that is not surprising for a club that has a history of stockpiling elite players, it might also be unsettling for young Delap, who would presumably hope to arrive at Stamford Bridge as the main man up top. Both deals for Delap and Ekitike are far from done, though, with Frankfurt wanting £84m for the latter – which would eclipse even the 2023 sale of Randal Kolo Muani to PSG. Three players who could leave Chelsea to make room are Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku and João Félix, with the latter apparently in advanced talks to rejoin Benfica just one year into his seven-year contract and his £45m move to the London club last summer. João Félix moved to Milan on loan in January but again was disappointing in Serie A and could move back to Portugal, perhaps even in time for Benfica's Club World Cup campaign later this month. Borussia Dortmund are in pole position to sign Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland, despite the Black Cats' promotion to the Premier League. Given his brother's experience at Dortmund, and subsequent rise to astronomical stardom, that is also not a huge shock, with RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt also said to be interested. But Dortmund's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, met with Bellingham last week in Ibiza … presumably with Wayne Lineker acting as some sort of intermediary?
