I've Been a Travel Editor for 10+ Years, and These 12 Overrated Products Are Wasting Space in Your Suitcase

You could fill an entire checked suitcase with overly hyped-up travel products. But after spending more than 10 years as a travel writer, I've found even the most popular gear can sometimes fall short. So, how do you tell an overrated travel product from a truly useful one? The best travel essentials maximize space and solve multiple packing problems. When in doubt, remember: less is more. A few of these picks might ruffle some feathers. Good packing is subjective, and what's worth it to you might not be for another traveler. Maybe you absolutely need that travel pillow to be able to sleep on a long-haul flight. But if it's space you want (hello, carry-on-only travelers!), this travel pro has you covered. Here are 12 overrated travel products you should drop—and what to pack instead. Sure, over-ear headphones look cool. But they're bulky, take up valuable space, and aren't great for side sleepers trying to nap on planes. The AirPods Pro 2 deliver excellent noise cancellation in a compact, palm-sized package that fits easily in your carry-on or pocket. They pair seamlessly via Bluetooth. Packing cubes are all the rage for organizing clothes, but they often add volume and weight without saving space. I pack about the same with standard cubes as without. Instead, invest in compression packing cubes like Bagail's, which actually reduce bulk by flattening clothes, making it easier to fit more in your suitcase, especially paired with a roomy, well-designed bag. Unless you need serious neck support, skip the bulky travel pillow. They take up a lot of room, and you only really use them twice per trip. Airlines often provide basic pillows anyway. I prefer wearing a cozy sweater on the plane and folding it for support. But if you simply must have a pillow, try The Tube. The stuffable pouch can hold up to three days' worth of clothes and packs down small when not in use. Duffels are cumbersome and offer little organization. A structured weekender like the Béis Weekender Bag stands upright, has multiple compartments including a shoe section, and keeps gear tidy and accessible. The Etronik Weekender offers similar features, along with a USB charger at a fraction of the cost. Organization helps maximize packing efficiency and saves time searching for items on the go. Travel bottles often claim to be leak-proof but rarely deliver. I learned this the hard way when my last bag flooded. Cadence Capsules changed the way I travel with more ease and less stress. They're sturdy, truly leak-proof, and magnetic for neat stacking while keeping your bag organized. The modular design helps you customize the size for everything from shampoo to sunscreen, making packing a satisfying game of Tetris. Backpacks are roomy but can make maneuvering in crowded spaces awkward while making you an easy target for pickpockets. After friends had their backpacks robbed twice while traveling, I switched to a smaller crossbody. The Baggalini Anti-theft Sling Bag is slash-resistant, RFID-blocking, and has locking zippers. Swing it to your front to keep an eye on your valuables. Inflatable footrests look fun but are bulky and tricky to inflate mid-flight, and are banned by some airlines. Instead, consider a compact lumbar support pillow like Tempur-Pedic's. It fits in your carry-on, supports your back, and takes up far less space. I love Birkenstocks, but if space is tight, I opt for versatile white sneakers like Adidas Sambas or Veja V-12s. They go with sundresses, athleisure, and casual looks, while protecting your feet during city walks. Add foldable ballet flats for dressier occasions. They pack small and polish off any outfit. Bright statement dresses are often one-note, hard to style multiple ways, and take up precious packing space. Neutral matching sets like this Sampeel duo can be mixed and matched with separates for several looks with less bulk. Simply dress the pieces up by pairing the top with a skirt, or the bottoms with a flowy blouse and fun jewelry. Water bottles are a travel must-have, but many popular stainless steel ones are heavy and awkwardly sized. The Larq water bottle is lightweight, insulated, and self-cleaning with a built-in UV-C light—no more musty smells or bacteria buildup. It fits well in cup holders and has a handy clip, making hydration effortless on the go. Travel hair dryers—even foldable ones—take up space and often perform worse than your at-home model. Voltage differences abroad can also fry them. Most hotels provide dryers anyway. Instead, save time and space while protecting your hair from heat damage with heatless curlers like Kitsch's Satin Curlers. Simply put them in overnight and wake up to blowout-esque waves. Towels are bulky and are usually provided at hotels and pools anyway. If you're camping or hitting the beach, opt for a quick-dry microfiber towel like Rainleaf's. It's super compact, soft, and fast-drying. Many travelers also love Turkish towels, too. They roll up small and double as stylish wraps or scarves. Love a great deal? I've Been a Solo Traveler for 15+ Years, and I Won't Go Anywhere Without These 13 Safety Devices—From $7

Look, I've done a fair amount of world travel with male partners—living in an Airstream and camping around the USA, chasing an ex down scary ski runs in the Colorado Rockies, wandering Italy following in the footsteps of a Napolitan boyfriend. But honestly? I feel better, safer, more confident, in control, and aware when I'm traveling solo. After 15 years of world travel, I've learned it's not my partner that keeps me safe, it's me. My most powerful tools are my awareness and intuition, and I've honed both over countless solo journeys traveling as a touring dancer, travel writer, and photographer. Of course, a few thoughtfully chosen safety accessories don't hurt either. From keeping track of my gear to staying in good health, these are a few of the products that help me feel safe when I'm off exploring solo. Luckily for you, many of them are on sale during the Amazon Memorial Day sale, so don't miss this chance to add them to your collection while they're up to nearly 45 percent off. Whether I'm with a group or traveling solo, I always have an Apple AirTag affixed to at least one piece of gear. The flight attendant-approved gadgets keep an extra eye on your belongings and provide real-time location tracking via Bluetooth. When I'm on my own, they give me extra peace of mind that I know exactly where my suitcase (they've saved Travel + Leisure editors plenty of times when their luggage didn't show up at baggage claim), camera equipment, and other valuables are. For an added layer of protection, Apple AirTags can also give your family and friends your location so they know that you're safe when you're on a solo adventure. Complete the bundle: While you're at it, pick up a new battery for your Apple AirTag. I've talked before about how annoying it is to replace AirTag batteries (the CR2032 batteries typically only last about a year, which goes by faster than you think), and before you know it, you're buying another pack of replacement batteries. Even then, some CR2032 batteries don't always work with AirTags because of the child safety anti-ingestion bitter coating. So when I came across this (on-sale) Apple AirTag life-extender, I was intrigued; it's perfect for the AirTag I always keep in my main piece of luggage, but I could also see this being handy to keep in a car or RV used for full-time vanlife. There are plenty of Apple AirTag holders and keychains out there, but I've found that the most secure way to attach them to my gear is with these ultra-strong sticker holders from 3M. The adhesive backing sticks to any surface (think hardside luggage shells, wallets, bike frames, and more). I personally use them on my camera lenses. Pro tip: When the lens is on your camera and in use, remove the tagged cap and place it in your camera bag (usually full of other pricey gear) so that if that gets nabbed, you can track the thief. Speaking of experience gear, as a travel photographer, I'm always traveling with camera equipment that's worth anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000. Needless to say, I don't want to lose these pricey lenses and camera bodies. So I looked into ways to add a tracking tag to my gear and found this hidden AirTag Arca-Swiss tripod plate for my camera bodies. It looks like a normal base plate, but actually has a hidden Apple AirTag compartment that can only be opened with a special included wrench, so thieves won't be able to access the tracker. When I'm traveling alone, I always have one hand on my passport. It's my most important travel document, and I don't want to lose it or have it stolen. That's why I recently upgraded my passport cover from an aesthetically pleasing one to a functional one, which has built-in FindMy capabilities should we get separated. Just like all my tech, I can now ping my passport and geolocate it in the event of theft. I was recently talking to a fellow travel writer who told me of a friend whose hotel room got burgled while she was in the bathroom taking a shower. Although these incidents are rare, the story got me thinking about some of the hotel rooms I've encountered that don't have an extra interior chain or latch to prevent the door from opening from the outside. I'm eyeing this portable door lock to add to my safety kit in case I come across a hotel or Airbnb door that doesn't have that extra safeguard. Keep in mind that if you're traveling on a cruise ship, these kinds of locks are prohibited. In the event of a fire, crews need to be able to get into a room and extinguish it quickly. My passport and my phone are my top two most important tools as a solo traveler. In fact, I have a picture of my passport saved to iCloud, should the passport ever go missing and I need its information to secure a replacement. All this is to say, my phone is full of useful information and tools that help keep me safe—contacts, copies of documents, health insurance, GPS maps, and more. That means my phone needs to be charged at all times in case of an emergency. So I'm never without an extra battery (or two)—the more compact the better. This one is 20 percent off, and it can charge your iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time. Shopping on a budget? The popular Charmast portable charger is on sale for $19. It's a traveler-favorite for its powerful battery life, fast charging abilities, and built-in cables. When I travel alone, I like to keep my purse snugly under my arm where it's impossible to be pickpocketed. Crossbody slings are the perfect purse design for solo travelers because you can swing them around to your front when you're navigating crowds, or keep them under your arm. Even when I sit down at restaurants, I usually keep my crossbody on so as not to leave it vulnerable on the ground or loose over the back of my chair. This adjustable crossbody sling from Wandrd, which is hardly ever on sale, is stocked with hidden pockets that are hard to tamper with, a weatherproof exterior, and a roomy interior to hold everything you need. Shopping on a budget? On sale for $47, the Travelon Anti-Theft Active Waist Pack's convenient hands-free design is enhanced with the brand's signature 5-Point Anti-Theft Security System to protect your belongings from common types of theft. Thankfully, I've never had to use a personal safety alarm or pepper spray, but a keychain siren can help you feel safer if you're walking around after dark by yourself (T+L's senior writer takes one on every trip). This one has rave reviews for its loud sound and only costs $23. Even if a thief doesn't steal your phone, they can still glean a lot of information from just looking over your shoulder—your hotel address, banking info, social handle, next destination, and more. All of this information can jeopardize your safety when you're traveling alone. Bad actors can use this to follow and stalk you or steal your private information. This $7 anti-spy tinted glass and screen protector for your phone makes it so that darting eyes can't see what you're looking at on the screen. When I turned 30, I departed Girona, Spain, to cycle the Pirinexus 360…by myself. The 360-kilometer ride was safely routed for me by Eat Sleep Cycle and took me five days, navigating rural mountainous gravel, winding roads through the Pyrenees, and busy beachside trails along the Costa Brava. But even when I'm not embarking on an ambitious solo ride, I always pack a bike light in my bag because cycling is how I prefer to get around cities like Paris and Amsterdam. City biking is perhaps even more hairy than rural road cycling, so always illuminate yourself if you're riding alone at dusk, and after dark with a portable and easy-to-charge bike light. I first learned about Recco reflector technology when I tried out a Nivis ski jacket this winter skiing in Ketchum, Idaho, and Samnaun, Switzerland. The tech helps rescue teams locate you in the event of an avalanche or if you get lost off a trail, and the Nivis Protego Pro ski shell comes with it built in. It's easy to add the tech to any outdoor gear, and arguably essential if you're headed out on a hike, kayak, etc. alone. If you plan on embarking on outdoor adventures solo, always let someone know (like a park ranger) where you're headed. And hike with plenty of extra water, food, and basic emergency supplies in your pack. There's also a $38 backpack version that you can attach to the handle or zippers to get the same level of safety. Summer's almost here, and when I'm traveling to the beach, or even just to the pool, I protect my phone in a watertight pouch like this on-sale duo from Syncwire. If my phone breaks when I'm solo traveling because I drop it in water, it's almost as bad as having it stolen. Watertight pouches are also great for protecting your phone from summer downpours and sand, too. Love a great deal? I'm T+L's Senior Shopping Writer, and These Are 15 Early Amazon Memorial Day Deals You Can't Pass Up—From $10

As a shopping writer for Travel + Leisure , it should come as no surprise that the bulk of my days are spent combing the internet for the best deals on travel gear and clothing to make my adventures more enjoyable. With Amazon's Memorial Day sale right around the corner, I've already taken to the site to check out its early deals and get a jumpstart on my shopping. After uncovering a slew of markdowns from some of my favorite brands, I'm ready to get my spring purchases out of the way before the weekend even begins. If you, too, don't want to wait to start leveling up your packing lists for your upcoming trips, I've taken the liberty of rounding up the 15 best Amazon deals that I've already added to my cart for my own travels. From the stylish Fjällräven Kånken backpack I've been eyeing since high school to a set of discounted Apple AirTags, you can score everything you need to upgrade your wardrobe and gear collection—with prices starting as low as $10. I'm always on the lookout for a comfy new pair of travel pants, and the wide, elastic waistband and flowy fit of this pair from Ododos sold them for me—not to mention they're now just $20. As a petite traveler, I constantly have to deal with the hem of my pants dragging along where I go, but since this pair comes in four different inseam lengths, that concern will soon be a thing of the past. Plus, while they're lightweight and stretchy, they're also flattering enough that I know I won't wear them only to lounge around my home or sit on a long flight. In fact, they'll easily be dressed up with the right pair of shoes and other accessories. I may even be tempted to snag them in more than one color while they're 26 percent off. I'm of the opinion that you can never have too many AirTags, so I'm taking Memorial Day as an opportunity to refresh my stock so I can add one to my keys, wallet, and other bags I plan on traveling with. This four-pack of tags is currently on sale for $80 and is one of the best ways to keep track of checked luggage, misplaced items, and more. They easily connect to the 'Find My' app on my iPhone so I can accurately see where my belongings are at any given time. Plus, each tag lasts for over a year, so I won't have to keep buying new ones. Comfortable sandals are a must-have when I'm traveling during the summer, and while I'll always swear by my Birkenstock Arizona Sandals, I've been intrigued by the orthotic insoles of this similar pair from KuaiLu. The outsoles are a little more flexible so they'll be a cinch to tuck into my suitcase when I'm not wearing them, while the trio of straps will hold my feet firmly in place without causing irritation. I have high arches, so the impressive support of these sandals instantly caught my eye, especially since they're designed to alleviate pressure on the feet. These versatile sandals will look great with my favorite maxi dresses, denim shorts, and even a bathing suit at the beach, and right now they're on sale for under $30. Not only do matching sets look great, but they're also a comfortable, low-effort outfit to throw on while traveling. The combination of an oversized button-down and a loose-fitting pair of shorts is perfect for the transition from spring to summer, and I especially love that the shorts are made with an adjustable elastic waistband that shouldn't dig into my skin while I'm sitting on the plane for an extended period of time. The army green shade is timeless (and matches with so many other pieces in my closet), and other shoppers have even shared that it 'packs without wrinkling,' which is really all I could ask for when building my dream travel wardrobe. One of my big travel plans for the summer is my first-ever F1 Grand Prix, which means I need to start stocking up on practical gear to bring with me to the track. At the top of my shopping list? A high-quality pair of earplugs to protect my hearing during the three-day event. The best-selling Loop Quiet 2 Ear Plugs are currently on sale for 25 percent off, and seeing as they're designed for travel, sleep, and everything in between, they're the perfect addition to my suitcase for this trip. Plus, they're lightweight, comfortable, and come with a handy carrying case that will ensure I don't lose them while I'm on the go. I have a number of weddings coming up in the next few months, and since I don't really want to deal with wrinkled clothing every time I get to my destination, I've started looking into travel-friendly garment bags. Fortunately, this option from Modoker is on sale for 23 percent off and is not only a garment bag, but also a duffel with an impressive 45L of storage space. I'll be able to zip my delicate dresses into the exterior of the bag, then fold it up and pack the rest of my belongings inside. It comes with a handy luggage sleeve so I can stack it atop my rolling suitcase with ease, plus its detachable shoulder strap will make it comfy to carry if I'm traveling with this bag only. Travel safety is always my top priority, so I'm taking the Memorial Day sale as a sign to stock up on gear that will give me peace of mind whether I'm traveling solo or with a group. This handy door lock is great for staying in an Airbnb or a hotel to keep out would-be threats since it's easy to use, acting as an extra lock with a reinforced chain. It's ultra-durable, will take up minimal space in my personal item, and will undoubtedly help me sleep a little easier when staying in an unfamiliar place. Noise-canceling headphones are a mainstay in my personal item while traveling, but since I recently broke my old pair, I'm in the market for a new option—and fast. This packable pair from JBL offers an impressive 70 hours of battery life so I never have to worry about losing my podcast or carefully curated travel playlist, and they're so lightweight that they'll be comfy to wear for long hours on end. They're programmed with adaptive noise canceling so I can block out the sounds of crying babies and chatty seatmates in-flight. Their Bluetooth compatibility also means I don't have to stress about cords tangling in my bag when they're packed away. The older I've gotten, the more I've begun to actually care if my clothes are wrinkled. So, aside from investing in more wrinkle-resistant clothing for my travels, I'm also snagging this portable steamer and iron that's compact enough to fit into my suitcase without taking up too much space. The tiny device is fitted with a rotatable handle for easy use, and it will allow me to carefully tend to my clothes without damaging them. It heats up in under five seconds so I can eliminate wrinkles and run out the door, and I'm sure it'll be an asset for all the upcoming weddings I'll be attending. Packing cubes have undoubtedly transformed my suitcase for the better, but I think I'm ready to level up and snag a pair of compression cubes to free up even more luggage space. This four-pack from Bagail comes with several bags of different sizes that will make staying organized a cinch. They're tear-resistant, super lightweight, and have impressive compression capabilities; plus, they come with built-in handles to make them a breeze to remove from a stuffed bag. At just $17, they're practically a steal right now, and they're guaranteed to make packing and unpacking easier than ever. Shorts and an oversized T-shirt have long been my go-to beach or poolside uniform, but I've decided that this is the summer I'm going to level-up my style game with a cool cover up—and this crochet piece is the perfect place to start while it's on sale for under $30. This knit beach dress is incredibly flattering with a mid-thigh cut and loose, flowy sleeves that will still keep me comfy even on toasty summer days. It'll be a no-brainer addition to my suitcase for my trip to Aruba later this year, and while I'm loving it in the simple cream shade, it also comes in 29 other colors and patterns, all of which I adore. I would describe myself as a relatively toasty traveler, but every summer I manage to forget to buy a portable fan to make my experiences more bearable. So, this year I'm pre-emptively snagging the Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan, and best of all, it doubles as a portable charger. This compact device is small enough to fit into any pocket of my backpack (or clothes) so I can have it ready for a too-hot train ride or flight, plus it's suitable for up to 19 hours of use. My friend packed this exact fan on a scalding trip to Italy several summers ago, and I was endlessly jealous when she set it up on her nightstand during a night in a room with no air conditioning. Now it's my turn to enjoy the relief from the heat! Sure, my closet is already overflowing with sneakers, but when I caught sight of this stylish pair from Madden Girl in my absolute favorite color combination, I knew I needed them for tromping around New York City this summer. They're fitted with rubber gum soles (a look that's undoubtedly trendy right now) alongside a fabric exterior with the dreamiest pop of color. I'm sure they'll look good with everything from a simple pair of jean shorts to a flowy maxi dress, and at just $40, they're a fraction of the price of similar sneakers on the market now. They've even been lauded by other shoppers as both 'comfortable and stylish,' with one person noting that after 'logging over 10,000 steps,' their feet still 'didn't hurt.' Maxi dresses are perhaps my biggest fashion vice, and when I spotted this stunning patchwork piece from Free People on sale for 33 percent off, my jaw quite literally dropped to the floor. The thick ribbon straps are a gorgeous detail, while the 100 percent cotton construction is guaranteed to be soft against my skin when I'm sightseeing or sitting down for a dinner. I especially love its loose, flowy silhouette and the slightly fitted bust that creates even more visual appeal. It's safe to say I've found my dream dress that strikes the unbeatable balance between feminine and functional. I've been coveting the Fjällräven Kånken backpack since I was in high school, so imagine my thrill in realizing that I'm now an adult and can simply buy one for myself. On sale for 36 percent off in the most delicious butter yellow shade, this sleek backpack is practically made for my summer adventures, and it's about to become my go-to for weekend trips. It's lightweight and surprisingly spacious with an additional easy-access pocket at the front, and it's adorned with the timeless Fjällräven branding. It's even earned a number of reviews from happy shoppers, with one person calling it their 'favorite everyday backpack,' as well as a 'great daypack for travel.' In short, it's everything I've been looking for. Love a great deal? Sign up for our T+L Recommends newsletter and we'll send you our favorite travel products each week.

Away Launches A Kids Collection, Including A Pint-Size Carry-On

Since its start in 2015, Away has cultivated a devoted following of its sleek, minimalistic luggage. Now the brand is expanding into a younger fanbase with the launch of its first Away collection just for kids. The collection consists of four items for children, including a smaller version of its carry-on luggage, with the aim of making traveling an easier affair for the whole family. Away's new kids collection offers four new pieces just for kids. Illustration: Forbes / Photo: Away For the collection, Away scaled down its iconic carry-on luggage to a kid-friendly size, offering it in five vibrant hues, including Cotton Candy Pink and Froggy Green. The collection also includes packing cubes, a backpack and lunch box, all in coordinating bright shades for a cohesive travel set. While the bright color-block designs are a departure from Away's typical muted tones, the Kids Carry-On is virtually the same design as the brand's regular carry-on options, just smaller. It features the same polycarbonate shell, smooth-gliding wheels and interior compression system that we love in its adult bags. In fact, the Away Bigger Carry-On is our tested best carry-on luggage overall. The Kids Carry-On offers enough space for kids to pack everything they need for longer getaways (five to seven days), but its lightweight design lends it well to shorter travels too, like a quick trip to visit the grandparents—and lets kids pull their own bag. It is similar in price to our current top pick for the best kids luggage: the State Logan Carry-On. Prices in the collection range from $40 for the lunch box and packing cubes to $225 for the carry-on. Take a look at the full collection below. With smooth 360-degree strolling wheels and a two-position telescoping handle—plus a shorter stature than typical carry-on luggage at 17.2 inches high—kids should have an easy time maneuvering the new Away Kids Carry-On luggage through the airport and wherever your family is traveling this summer. It includes the brand's lightweight polycarbonate shell, a TSA-approved lock, drawstring laundry bag and Away's well-regarded compression system, promising to stow six to ten children's outfits. Let them select which of the five color combos they like best, and monogramming is available, too. Consider this trio of water-repellent nylon packing cubes to quell some of the family vacation chaos by keeping everything for the kids in its place. They're easy to spot and have a nylon mesh upper that allows you to easily and quickly see what's inside. The cubes fit neatly into the Away Kids Carry-On and pack down flat when not in use. The Kids Backpack from Away is made for travel with two easy-to-access side pockets, tablet sleeve and a chest strap that doubles as the bag's trolley sleeve. Keep in mind this nylon backpack is just 13.6 inches tall, meaning its more the size of a toddler or preschooler backpack—or great for a big kid who wants to pack lightly with their in-flight personal item. It weighs just under a pound, making it easier for little shoulders to tote around, and is available in three colors that coordinate with the rest of the collection. This petite lunch box is just 7.5 x 8.9 x 3.9 inches, making it ideal for younger kids' lunch or carrying a child's snacks along on a trip. It is insulated and includes three separate interior compartments, including a zippered mesh pocket for additional snacks. The buckle allows you to hook the lunch box to a backpack or the carry-on when kids grow tired of carrying it. It's available in three colors.
