BREAKING NEWS Seething MLB star Taylor Walls in shocking clash with umpire after ejection

Tampa Bay Rays star Taylor Walls was seething during a shocking outburst with home-plate umpire Nic Lentz on Sunday, leading to his ejection and needing to be restrained multiple times. Walls did not agree with a strike call against the Houston Astros and was visibly frustrated. After tapping his helmet a few times, Lentz stopped play and tossed the Rays star from the contest. The ejection immediately had Walls seeing red, with him angrily talking to Lentz before being briefly separated by Rays manager Kevin Cash. The Rays' Taylor Walls was ejected for tapping his helmet after blown call

During spring training, MLB made the decision to test an automated strike zone (ABS) with a ball-strike challenge system for a majority of Grapefruit and Cactus League games. And to signal a challenge, a batter would tap on his helmet after a pitch. Simple enough. It's safe to say that umpire Nic Lentz did *not* appreciate the callback to the ABS testing. Advertisement With Taylor Walls staying in the game to hit in the ninth on Sunday against the Astros, he watched a first-pitch slider from Josh Hader miss low and away. Yet, Lentz called the pitch a strike, and Walls couldn't believe it. Walls called time to try to collect himself after having his entire approach changed in the at-bat. He also had some words with Lentz about the call. But everything took a turn when Walls tapped his helmet. Lentz took exception to the gesture and casually walked in front of home plate to inform Walls that he was ejected. Like, I don't think I've ever seen an umpire eject someone so nonchalantly. Advertisement Walls, understandably, was livid. Umpires hate being shown up, and they have a quick trigger for arguing balls and strikes. But tapping on the helmet was an awfully tame way to express, "I disagree." Walls had to be restrained by his coaches before breaking out of those restraints and having more words for Lentz. All that over a helmet tap that Lentz really should have let slide. Walls was right, after all — the call was missed. Christopher Morel would have to hit in Walls' place, and he promptly struck out. The Astros held on to win, 1-0. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Rays' Taylor Walls was ejected for tapping helmet after blown call

Rune deals with an angry fan at French Open by asking him to be removed

PARIS (AP) — Holger Rune asked for a spectator to be removed at the French Open on Friday, claiming the man shouted aggressively at him after Rune showed frustration by slamming his towel into his towel box. Rune was playing Frenchman Quentin Halys on Court Philippe-Chatrier when the incident happened near the end of the third set of the Dane's 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 third-round win. Rune, the No. 10 seed, said the man took exception to the way he threw his towel down. 'The guy was yelling aggressive with me, he reach(ed) out for me,' he said. 'I thought this was very strange, because I did not do anything against him and he should not interact with a player on the court. It's a bit embarrassing. 'I told the supervisor that I would prefer him not being there, because it was a bit uncomfortable. They said they'd check the video, and if it was true what I said they would get him away. I guess they checked, and I didn't see him for the rest of the match.' Rune felt he was blameless. 'I am allowed to hit the towel into my towel box, I didn't do anything against him. I think maybe he got annoyed that I threw the towel in my towel box. But I can do whatever I want with my towel box as long as I'm keeping respect for everyone, which I believe I did, and the umpire believed so because I didn't get any warning.' Roland-Garros has earned a reputation in recent years for rowdy and sometimes unsettling behaviour — with particular hostility reserved for opponents of French players. American player Taylor Fritz and Belgian David Goffin have been upset by the behavior of home fans in the past two years. Rune was upset by only the one fan this time. 'I was actually very happy about the rest of the crowd,' he said. 'They were very respectful.' He plays eighth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the fourth round. ___ AP tennis:

Mariners SS J.P. Crawford goes ballistic after ejection over wrong third-strike call vs. Nationals

Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford had some words for home plate umpire Andy Fletcher on Thursday. In the sixth inning of the Mariners' 9-3 loss to the Washington Nationals, Crawford was rung up on a called third strike from starting pitcher Mackenzie Gore with runners on the corners, no outs and Seattle down 2-0. The pitch was outside to the naked eye, but Fletcher still saw it as in the zone. Advertisement Immediately after he was punched out, Crawford could be heard yelling "That's not a strike man!" at Fletcher, who responded by ejecting him. Crawford remained on the field to get his money's worth until Mariners manager Dan Wilson stepped in and pushed him back to the dugout. Crawford was replaced atop the Mariners lineup by Leo Rivas, who took over at second while Dylan Moore moved to cover shortstop. MLB's Statcast cameras sided with Crawford, showing the pitch to be at least a ball outside. That result wound up being significant. Julio Rodriguez struck out on the next at-bat to give the Mariners their second out, then Cal Raleigh reached base on a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded and two outs, Randy Arozarena also struck out to keep Seattle scoreless for the inning.
