Dozens of charred bodies found buried in militia-controlled area of Libya, UN says

The UN human rights office on Wednesday raised alarm over 'gross human rights violations' in Libya after the discovery of dozens of bodies, some of them charred, that were buried and others left in hospital morgues in an area of Tripoli controlled by an armed militia. Volker Turk, the UN's high commissioner for human rights, said in a statement that he was 'shocked' by the discoveries at detention facilities run by the Stabilisation Support Authority (SSA), one of the western city's most powerful militant groups, whose commander, Abdel Ghani Al Kikli, died in clashes with rival militias in May. He said the discoveries confirm the long-standing findings by the UN Support Mission in Libya (Unsmil) and the former Independent Fact-Finding Mission, as well as various witness accounts regarding the existence of such sites and the extent of abuses committed, including torture and forced disappearances. The SSA has been accused of committing atrocities and crimes against humanity during the country's long-running conflict. 'Our worst-held fears are being confirmed: dozens of bodies have been discovered at these sites, along with the discovery of suspected instruments of torture and abuse, and potential evidence of extrajudicial killings,' Mr Turk said. His office said it had received information about the excavation of 10 burnt bodies at the SSA headquarters in Tripoli's Abu Salim district, as well as 67 more bodies found in refrigerators at two local hospitals. Mr Turk also said a burial site was discovered at the SSA-run Tripoli Zoo. The identities of the deceased remain unclear, he added. Mr Turk called on Libyan authorities to grant the UN access to the sites as part of its mandate to document human rights abuses and urged them to seal the area to preserve the evidence. He also noted continuing efforts to uphold the truce, facilitated by Unsmil, and reminded all parties of their obligations to respect international human rights and humanitarian law. Libya has been plagued by factional violence since the 2011 Nato-backed uprising against Muammar Qaddafi, with armed groups vying for power and control over territory. 'I call on all responsible political and security actors in the country to use their leadership and authority to protect and fulfil the human rights of all Libyans,' said Mr Turk. 'I further urge these actors and those with influence over them to redouble their efforts to end the recurring cycle of transitional arrangements and establish a full and inclusive democracy.'

ADAFSA closes Bin Khalifa Cafeteria in Abu Dhabi for violating safety requirements

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has issued a decision to administratively close Bin Khalifa Cafeteria facility in Abu Dhabi , which holds the trade license (CN-1049262), for violating Law No. (2) of 2008 regarding food in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the legislation issued thereunder, as well as for its danger to public health. ADAFSA explained that the food control report stated that the administrative closure decision against the facility came as a result of repeated food safety violations and the failure to apply effective corrective measures, which necessitated immediate action to ensure food safety and the health of consumers. The authority confirmed that the administrative closure order will continue against the facility until the reasons for the violations disappear, with the possibility of resuming the activity after correcting the conditions of the facility in full and adhering to all food safety requirements. ADAFSA pointed out that the administrative closure and the detection of violations comes as part of the Authority's plan to strengthen the food safety system in Abu Dhabi and subject all food establishments to periodic inspection to ensure their compliance with the requirements, with a focus on proactive protection for consumers and ensuring that all establishments comply with food safety requirements. ADAFSA appealed to the public to communicate with it, and to report any violations detected in any food establishment or when the safety of the food item is doubted by calling the toll-free number of the Government of Abu Dhabi 800555 so that the Authority's inspectors take the necessary action to reach safe and safe food for all members of society in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Heritage Commission records 53 violations in March and April as oversight efforts continue

RIYADH: The Heritage Commission recorded 53 violations related to antiquities and urban heritage across several regions of the Kingdom during March and April 2025, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Thursday. It comes as part of the commission's efforts to protect Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage and address irregular practices that threaten its preservation, SPA added. In March, 29 violations were identified, including the unauthorized sale of antiquities and the carrying out of archaeological survey and excavation activities without the required permits. Several violations were also detected via social media platforms. Two cases were referred to the Public Prosecution, seven were sent to the Violations Review Committee, and 20 were passed on to the relevant security authorities. In April, the commission monitored 24 violations, including encroachments on archaeological sites in Madinah, the Eastern Province, Tabuk, Hail, the Northern Borders Region and Al-Jouf. These included unauthorized entry into sites, tampering with fencing or signage, and the unlicensed use of metal detectors. Additional violations were uncovered through digital platforms, involving the possession and display of manuscripts, coins and historical replicas intended for illegal trade. The commission has initiated legal action in several cases, referring some to the Public Prosecution and others to Public Security. The Violations Review Committee has issued financial penalties ranging from SR5,000 ($1,332) to SR50,000. The Heritage Commission stressed that monitoring and enforcement efforts are part of a broader strategy to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the Kingdom's antiquities and preventing actions that could damage their historical or cultural significance. It also emphasized the vital role of community members and institutions in safeguarding the nation's heritage. Citizens and residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity or attempts to trade antiquities through official channels, including the 'Archaeological Report' service, the Commission's social media accounts, or the Unified Security Operations Center at 911. The commission reiterated that preserving national heritage was a shared responsibility that requires collective action.
