Sprawling beachfront development in Colwood set to open presentation centre, construction underway

An aerial rendering of Colwood's Beachlands development is shown. Colwood's $1.2-billion master plan for the waterfront property across from Royal Bay has finished its first building – which will temporarily be the presentation and sales centre. 'It's quite a surreal moment,' says Seacliff Properties' vice president of development Georgia Desjardins. 'Beachlands has been years in the making.' Visitors will soon have a place to view architectural models and see how the seaside community will eventually look at feel. Co-developers Reliance Properties and Seacliff Properties are transforming 134 acres of land in a project that's set to build out over 10 to 15 years as people invest in the community. 'The site itself has a tremendous history, over 100 years as a gravel pit,' said Reliance Properties president and CEO John Stovell. 'To be able to redevelop a brownfield site and bring it back to life with over 45 acres of park space and 2,850 homes and commercial, retail, restaurants, that's a great opportunity.' The developers say the City of Colwood was first to envision the neighbourhood 25 years ago. They believe construction could generate 10,500 full-time direct, indirect and induced jobs. It's unclear when the Beachlands 'experience centre' will open to the community for enquiries and sales. Once the master plan is complete, the building on Metchosin Road is expected to be turned into a commercial space.

Barrie police help mama duck and her 10 ducklings make safe trip to waterfront

Two Barrie police officers empty a box of ducklings at the waterfront with mama duck waiting on Fri., May 30, 2025. It wasn't your average morning at the Barrie Courthouse, instead of the usual parade of lawyers, officers and paperwork, it was all hands - and wings- on deck as police officers turned their duty to serve and protect into a little animal TLC. Members of the Barrie Police Service and courthouse staff have been keeping a close eye on a determined mama duck who chose to build her nest in a planter near the courthouse entrance. Barrie ducks Two Barrie police officers and courthouse staff put newly hatched ducklings into a box on Fri., May 30, 2025, after mama duck made a nest in a planter at the building's entrance. (Barrie Police Service) On Thursday, her eggs hatched, revealing 10 tiny, fuzzy ducklings. By Friday morning, it was time for the new family to make their way to the waterfront, but navigating the streets of downtown Barrie isn't exactly duck-friendly. Barrie ducks Two Barrie police officers carry a box of ducklings with mama duck alongside to the waterfront on Fri., May 30, 2025. (Barrie Police Service) That's when police officers stepped in, gently carrying the fluffy new ducklings in a box to the lake with mama waddling her way alongside them. Caribbean meets the Florida Keys at Gramps Getaway on Virginia Key

Don't you want to just getaway? Well, Gramps Getaway on Virginia Key is your ticket out, minus the travel fees. This casual and cool waterfront restaurant and bar is located on the grounds of the Rickenbacker Marina, welcoming guests both from the land and sea. Adam Gersten, who also owns the famed Gramps Bar in Wynwood, opened this hugely successful spot about a year and half ago. The buzz around Gramps Getaway is that it's the place to be. "It's kind of hard to beat the view and then on top of that we actually have great drinks and great food," Gersten explained. "Also, you know, we always say music is a big feature of Gramps generally, so that's also been folded in here to the new location." Happy hour brings great deals on drinks and food. But Gersten says pricing has been fair since day one. "We've been doing recession pricing for happy hour and lunch before the recession started, so we're ready for it," he said. DJ's and live music play throughout the week, and there's a weather plan as well. "Also in the summer when it gets real hot, starts raining, we also have performance space inside and a full bar inside and tables and stuff," Gersten added. Regulars rave about making this their weekly destination. "My friend is visiting from New Jersey. She just landed like 5 minutes ago. I said we're going to my favorite place. You're gonna get the best broccoli salad, the best drinks, the best views. Like I kind of don't want to tell people about this place, but, yeah," Nada Venkabbou, a regular guest, said. Ashley Harbidge agreed. "It's a great vibe, great eats, great drinks. I got the margarita," she said. Caribbean meets the Florida Keys Executive Chef James McNeal prepares his Caribbean/Florida Keys style menu with care and attention to detail. "Really fresh ingredients, unique and proper technique, but overall just really simple food done well," McNeal explained about his culinary philosophy. Menu Highlights: Smoked Fish Dip with Housemade Chips and Sweet and Spicy Pickled Peppers Blackened Mahi Sandwich with Housemade Peaklis Sauce Signature Smash Burger with Pickles, Tangy Mustard Sauce and Melted Cheese Broccoli Salad Gramps Getaway is open 7 days a week. They have happy hours Monday through Friday from 4 p.m to 7 p.m. Boaters are encouraged to contact them on Instagram or directly for arrangements. For more info: On Instagram @grampsgetaway

Sydney waterfront kiosks able to reopen this summer after apartment project delayed

Carolyn Myles was disappointed for her customers when Cape Breton Regional Municipality told her last fall they would not be renewing the lease on her fish-and-chip kiosk on the downtown boardwalk in Sydney, N.S. A long-planned apartment complex was getting set to start construction this summer on land where the former Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club used to be and several kiosks were in the way. But she said she and her customers were elated this week when she found out that the development was being delayed and she would be able to reopen the Lord Fin and Feather. "You wouldn't believe the response already, just people walking on the waterfront, just coming up and saying, 'When are you going to open?'" she said Wednesday. Myles also said she was surprised by an outpouring of comments on social media from people who were upset at the loss of attractions on the waterfront, including her business. 'I didn't know … that they would miss it' "I didn't know … that they would miss it. I really didn't," she said. "I guess I underrated myself. But when you put your heart into it, that's what happens." Bedford-based Doucet Developments won the exclusive right to develop CBRM's waterfront land in November 2022, proposing to put up a couple of apartment complexes and a commercial office building starting in 2024. They got an extension on their deadline last year, saying the plans had changed and they were going to start with a hotel. That meant the waterfront kiosks had to make way for construction equipment, so the vendors were told to vacate. In February, the developer got another extension, saying the hotel had fallen through and they were going to start construction of a residential and commercial building this summer. It's not clear why that is not going ahead this year. Doucet Developments could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Myles said while she is happy to be back at work, it's been expensive having kitchen equipment taken out last fall and reinstalled this spring. And she's having trouble finding an electrician and a plumber who are available to do the work on short notice. "The i's should have been dotted and the t's should have been crossed before we were told to get out, because it cost us," she said. Mayor hears concerns Mayor Cecil Clarke said he was unaware of a delay in the development and said any questions about that should go to the developer. In the meantime, he said, he has heard people's concerns and CBRM is responding to the public's desire for food vendors on the waterfront by allowing the kiosks to reopen. Clarke said he's pleased the developer is willing to accommodate that. "I think that that's a positive thing," he said. "It's a good corporate citizen that thinks that way. "This is a way of making a positive out of what could have been a very negative situation." Mayor blames previous administration Clarke said any disruption to vendors was a result of a development agreement signed by the previous administration and said the kiosks were built under his earlier administration after the yacht club burned down in 2013. "I didn't put them in a position to leave there. I was the person that made sure that those buildings went on the waterfront after the devastating loss of the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club." Clarke said an ice cream vendor may be taking over another kiosk and there are talks about the possibility of reopening the Portside restaurant.
